Source is in the download! You can make a modified version of this as long as I get some credit.
NCrawler updated to 1.5_01 for me! Thank you, NCrawler!
Have you ever wandered around a huge desert, longing to find something, but all you can find is cacti and more sand? Well now you can find buried treasures! This is a simple mod that adds treasures to your game that you can only find in sand.
Look who found treasure!
These treasures have some nice loot.
Someone got lucky!
Who could have possibly buried this here?
-Updated to 1.3_01!
-Treasure in the Nether!
-Reduced amount of rarity choices. You now have common and rare.
-Common rarity choice is now 1 out of 20 chance of finding chests
-Rare rarity choice is now 1 out of 100 chance of finding chests
-Bugfix. Thanks Arperum!
-Undersea chests now have special pirate loot (gold blocks)!
-Chests found under the sea have different items. Read quote below.
-A lot of modification to the items appearing in chests. Read the quote below for all the new items.
-Diamond appeared in a 1 out of 100 chance, so I reduced it a bit.
-Coal and torches now appear! Bread does not appear anymore due to the fact is was unstackable.
All items that can be found in chests included in this release:
(Rarest of all) Diamond
Undersea items found:
(Rarely) Gold Blocks - Only found in true pirate chests :wink.gif:
Someone made a modification for this. Look at the post here!
Also, someone was generous enough to make a quick installation tutorial.

So anyway here's a simple guide how to install :biggrin.gif:
1. Go to .Minecraft folder.
2. Enter the Bin folder.
3. In the Bin folder open the Minecraft.Jar with Winrar.
4. In the Minecraft.Jar delete the META-INF Folder.
5. Drag the en.class and the sa.class into your Minecraft.jar
6. Enter your save and forget about mining ! :biggrin.gif:
Mind if I make a modified version of this?
I'll lower chances for a chest even more,
change the buriedLootItem() function to give 1-10 of any block or a random item (chosen from the items available in the unmodded game, excluding records[these are to be found in dungeons]).
So you can get very unlucky and get nothing or get a chest with 270 diamond blocks (wich theoretically has a chance of happening, practically impossible though, the RNG from java isn't THAT bad)
This are the most extreme cases though.
Also, I'll make it so require any 5 blocks of sand around it(no longer required that all sides and the bottom are covered, any 5 would do) so you can eventually get one from digging sideways or from below. (Thus making them a bit more common again)
Edit: the spoiler is wrong >_> I misinterpreted some code.
