I have been working a a project for some time now. After some thinking I've decided to dub it "Project Pyongyang". The name is slightly misleading because I am not just building the North Korean capital city Pyongyang. I am building the entire country of North Korea! It is a very exciting project, my goals are to keep it unbiased and as realistic as possible. I can't confirm weather or not I will build some towns to north and south of North Korea but it is a thought. Most people don't know very much about North Korea but that isn't a problem. I will keep it as user friendly as possible by giving an introduction room with some background information and possible some sort of map so they can navigate this absolutely gargantuan map, then I will set them loose and hopefully they will be able to utilize the street signs to navigate the world. Please tell me your thoughts, compliments and criticisms in the comments! Building this map will be exceptionally difficult because the only way to see the country is on state sanctioned tours, in these tours you aren't allowed to talk to locals, can only take pictures of monuments, and are under constant surveillance by minders who take you to designated locations. Hence most of the map is based off of the very few pictures that capture the 'real north korea' and satellite images
So far I have developed about 1/4 of Pyongyang and also one of the Kim family's palaces outside of Pyongyang. In Pyongyang I have made the famous "Ryugyong hotel" AKA the tower of doom. I have also made part of the subway system and places such as the workers party monument and the Juche Tower. This next paragraph is optional to read and simple gives a bit of background on North Korea and what it's like... Please tell me your thoughts, compliments and criticisms in the comments!
North Korea has been a dictatorship since the 1940's when Korea split in two. The first dictator of North Korea was Kim Il Sung. He built a 'cult personality' around himself by producing propaganda. He became worshiped as a god. He was integrated into every part of peoples' lives. He made the country strictly communist and it has remained that way ever since. He died in 1994 and his son Kim Jong Il took the wheel. Right around this time the country entered a horrible famine in which nearly 10% of the countries population died. This was mainly because of the country's poor leadership. The country has remained one of the poorest ever since. It has the worst healthcare in the world. It is the most closed off country in the world. Owning a business is illegal, and in most cases owning a car is also illegal. Living there is hell. They have concentration camps worse than Hitler's where people spend years if not there entire lives (assuming they survive) all for committing petty crimes or being related to someone who commits a crime. It is also illegal to leave North Korea. Recently Kim Jong Il took over after his father Kim Jon Il died. The leadership of North Korea live lavish lifestyles in their own personal neighborhoods with sprawling villas and palaces for the dictator. They spend their time yachting, sleeping and drinking while their people starve.
