I've been playing around with the grass on 1.9.5 (Yes I've been hacking the grass in rather than waiting ten years for it to grow :tongue.gif:), it seems that the only place I can get animals to spawn is towards the sun from the bedrock block. I built a platform about 15 blocks by 15 blocks starting at 25 blocks from the bedrock in each compass direction and that is the only place that spawned any animals.
You should seriously make it so that you do not spawn in a tundra in 1.9... I have to put torches around my water source blocks (every sing one!!! even the ones that are made infinitely) because they always freeze.
You can put a roof over it too if you don't wanna worry about putting a torch near every source block.

"Towards the sun" isn't really a specific direction, and 15x15 platforms are rather huge (225 blocks) and you only get 80 dirt blocks. But animals should spawn in any new chunk, usually on a 5x5 to 7x7 square of grass (I think chunks are 16x16 squares), so it should work anywhere as long as it's suitable for the animals to spawn (IE it being lit up). That is helpful though, so thanks :cool.gif:

Right, sorry I should have been more specific, I mean towards the sunrise (East?), and yes I did use large platforms (I had them already built). I used extra grass for the testing purposes, I had 128 blocks. I tested each of the five platforms (one around the bedrock and four jutting off from it) for 10 minecraft days each. I stayed 24 blocks away from the test platform on each occasion. The 128 blocks of grass was divided into four areas of grass in each quadrant of the large platforms. Only the platform heading towards the sunrise spawned any animals. I use vanilla minecraft except for the too many items mod.
I don't know if it is a peculiarity to 1.9.5 or I was just unlucky, someone else would need to run a similar test to confirm or deny it. I have some time tonight so I might re run the test and see what happens :smile.gif:

Ah I see hah (I assumed towards the east but wasn't sure :tongue.gif:). Have fun rerunning the tests, would be interesting if they did end up on the same platform

Re-running now :smile.gif: With exactly 80 blocks of grass on each platform this time :smile.gif: And all four platforms running simultaneously. So far I have two chickens spawned on one platform, but its only day 2. I'm also remaining on a tower in the centre so as not to reload any chunks unfairly. (It's not very exciting just standing there :tongue.gif:)
It is nice to know that animals do spawn in 1.9.5 though :smile.gif:
Four platforms starting 24 blocks from the bedrock block, one platform in each direction. Each platform is 9x9 containing 80 blocks of grass and the centre block is cobblestone. Each platform is identical and throughout the testing period I did not move from a central pillar. The test ran for 2 hours.
Yellow block: One cow, two sheep, four chickens, one pig.
Red block: Four pigs.
Blue block: One sheep.
Green block: Three pigs and one sheep.
Conclusion
Animal spawning has been fixed in 1.9.5 and given enough time you should be able to spawn animals on any patch of grass in your skyblock world. Make sure your block of grass is as large as you can make it (you can always rip up the grass later) and well lit.
I check on this thread every 3 days or so and I see the same damn question 1-2 times on EVERY page. im thinking of clicking on the report button for each one and reporting people with a serious case of retardation. :dry.gif:
BTW awesome map... have the 2.1 hardcore map and got most of the objectives complete. omg its so damn hard to play in hardcore and make a slip/get creaped and start over.
the sand island fall if i place cobblestone next to it
DISSAPOINT
sorry, this map is bad as hell, and you need make sand island more properly!
It's meant to be that way, to be a CHALLENGE You have to make a platform UNDER it to get the sand. Try reading other posts and you'd see such. Many people have been able to do it. Just because you can't figure that part of the challenge does not mean he made the map bad or didn't make it 'properly'. It's suppose to be HARD. to make you THINK how to go about the next step. Just like with the nether portal and the trick to lighting it with out a flint and steel. Something else that had been posted many times how to do.
If you read back a few pages you would SEE how you do it.
Or I'll just post it all again.
Where are all the items at? : (2.0/2.1)
All of the items in 2.0/2.1 are divided among the islands. When you start you will just have the land of dirt, a tree and a chest with lava and an ice block for a coble generator. Make your way to the sand island to find a few more of the items. Make a Nether portal and enter to find the rest.
Where to find the 2nd ice block for infinite water spring : (2.0/2.1)
In 2.1/2.0 of the map the 2nd ice block is IN THE NETHER!
Note: In 1.9Pre5, you can make an infinite water spring with just one block of ice. Any water below a ‘fall’ of water will turn into a water source block. This as reported by Jeb is being removed/fixed!
How to make a Cobble Generator:
Take the long end of the island and dig a 4 long, 1 deep trench. Now take out one of the two center blocks. Place the ice block in the end next to the center block you dug, cover it so it don’t refreeze and break it, The water will flow into the hole and not spread. Now place the lava into the other end this should leave 1 space from the lava and the hole the waters going to. Cobble will form in that space.
= the water flowing from the sorce block
Just with 1 block over the water so it doesn’t freeze back up if playing in 1.9.
How to light your portal without a flint and steel: (2.0/2.1)
First there is NO flint and steel, or means to make one in this map.
Put wood planks on both sides of the bottom of the nether portal (NOT INSIDE IT), then block off a small area in front to set the lava. The lava will catch the planks on fire, as the fire spreads from the front to back it will light the portal.
THIS IS REPORTED TO NO LONGER WORK IN 1.9PRE5 FOR SOME! Could be something with Lava had been tweaked as it had with the water. Some have gotten it to work, other’s not, it may be just where the lava gets set.
How to stop your water from turning back into ice: (1.9pre)
Put a block –ANY HEIGHT- over where your water is and it won’t freeze back up. Be creative, make a well! Or an indoor spring!
How to get below your land (Also how to get below the Sand Island in 2.0/2.1):
Make a watervater. Make sure you have a means back UP before you do this (ladders, stairs, something): Place water either on the edge or along the side of a hole (MAKE SURE TO COVER IT IN 1.9 SO IT DON’T FREEZE) then with a few bits of cobble ride the water down. As you’re floating down start placing the cobble along the underside of the land making pillar downwards while scooting to the edge of the water for air. Once down how far you want swim back up and place one block beneath your feet. Either return up to remove the water or if you can reach it from below do it there. Make sure you have away back up!
How to make a wheat farm:
Put a bone in your crafting table to get 3 bone meal. Use ONE AT A TIME on grass to grow tall grass. Break the tall grass to yield seeds. If you get none, use the next bone meal.
Recommend saving at least ONE of them for the melon farm. (Read next)
How to make a melon farm:
Put your melon slice into your crafting table to get seeds. You need at least 2 blocks of farmed land for it to grow, one for the stem, one for the melon to form on. The melon will not form if there is no farmed land for it to grow on.
Recommend saving at least ONE bone meal to use on the stem. This will end up being your main food supply as wheat grows slow and you need 3 for 1 bread. Where as 1 melon can give you 3-5 slices and can renew from the same fully grown stem. (sometimes rather quickly)
How to make wool from string:
Put String in a 2x2 pattern in your crafting box.
= string.
How to make animals spawn:
In 1.8, animals do still respawn as the code for breading is not yet added, but they spawn rather rarly. You just need grass and to move at least 24 blocks away for them to (maybe) pop into existents,
In 1.9 they will not spawn, they come pre-loaded with the chunks and once killed off there gone, although in the pre-releases there is a sort of bug that rarely happens that can spawn animals if chunks get reloaded and they have what is needed to spawn.
I.e. you cut out the chunks in MC edit or such... play in game, chunks arn't there. You build out and now there’s land/grass there. You move away, come back, bug may rarely happen where chunk loads as if it's the first time and thus pops the animals there if there is grass for them to spawn on. (This only works once, once the animals are dead there dead)
Again that is a RARE BUG in 1.9. Pre 1-4 (not sure about 5)
How to make mobs spawn:
You have to have a platform or a mob trap that is –at minimum- of 24 blocks away from you. This includes above or below you. Making a drop trap 24 blocks up (that is the bottom of the trap) is high enough to kill mobs when they fall. If you do –not- want endermen make sure you have a roof over your platform that gives a 2 block high clearance sense endermen are 3 blocks tall.
How to make a SIMPLE mob drop trap:
The one shown in my play though (link below) is a simple, yet very effective design. It uses –NO WATER- or sighs to push mobs around.
Making a stone tower 24 blocks up. I made a 9x9 platform. (in my video, I rounded the corners for looks) adding one torch to mark the center. Then added walls around it 2, or 3 blocks high if you want endermen then a roof with a torch on top. I then broke out the center 3x3 blocks (plus the torch) and then dug my way back down.
Pretty much:
The narrow platform for mobs to stand on, 3 wide all the way around makes it a cramped space and mobs will keep pushing each other off. This gives you a LOT of items. Now larger traps may yield more mobs and thus more items but not like you’ll be using up every item asap.
Note that 24 blocks is not enough to kill endermen! But it lowers their health and makes them easier to handle. Adding some sort of border that they can’t walk over seems to keep them from wondering randomly all over.
Hope that helps someone :smile.gif:

Why is the water freezing in ver. 2.1?
This has already been answered.
In 1.9 the island is in an ice plains biome.
I began minecraft ~July 7 2011 1.7.3 Beta
