I do like those. I have actually taken a couple out without using lava. And some are hard if not impossible to do this way - on top of cliffs or within tunnels. They do add quite a lot of difficulty. Normal Minecraft is way too easy for me, combat-wise. I don't remember the last time I got killed by a mob. In here, you are walking down a hill, and suddenly five mobs appear out of nowhere and want to kill you. You have to think fast to be able to get out alive (and not back away right into a cactus!)
What I get is walking along and I see 20 or so mobs already spawned on top of a hill. No surprise or ambush feeling they're just there already. OpenGL is... off? Whichever one renders them still, and render distance is far. They don't spawn on proximity for me they're just already there, which I guess isn't the intended effect.
Within tunnels or on areas I can't get above, I still feel limited to tunnelling underneath to take out the spawners before battle. I wish minecraft traps were easier to hide- Every time I see gravel or pressure plates I'm always just on edge.
Of course, if I"m coming off as 'complaining', that certainly isn't the case- If I didn't like these maps, why would I still be playing them, discussing them, etc? These maps are, by and far, the most fun I've had with (single player) minecraft in a long time. In addition, that fort with all the spider spawners under it, while being such a simple design, is so awesome I've adopted it into regular play as outposts I set up when I"m far from home in my SMP server with friends.
Just how TALL are those things? The large one is roughly 110 blocks high.
and... How much wood is in any given one? Umm... *picks up calculator* The main trunk of a large Titan Willow will probably give you about 5,200 wooden planks - of course, that's not counting all the branches.
- I'm still speechless.
But..um...there is one problem-
Are all the leaf blocks close enough to a wood block so that there isn't a chain reaction that would kill off most leaf blocks in that tree if one leaf block were destroyed? I'm sure some leaves will die, but the main structure of the tree will stay intact - there are wood blocks places all over the insides of the leaf areas to maintain the leaves (not counting the already logically placed branches, i'm talking about wooden blocks just put there to keep the outer leaves alive.)
And you just also made me realize something- the forest's ground will be plain dirt, won't it :/?
Because it certainly won't be grass.
Grass = easy mode. :smile.gif:
quick edit:
wait a second.... Ohhhh Vechs you evil *******, monsters will be able to spawn under those trees won't they?
- Rhetorical question
If you turn on Fast Graphics, monsters can spawn on leaf blocks... :biggrin.gif:
The first thing I' gonna do it light the thing on fire the first chance i get :biggrin.gif:
Then ill be able to see all Chests and even find the Victory Monument :biggrin.gif:
Unless trees miraculously started to have bits of iron in there, no. unless of course in one of the trees a magical chest appear and award you with a nice bit of iron.

What happens if you get really, really excited seeing your girlfriend while wearing diamond leggings?
ARRRRRRRRG! At first I feel all wonderfully clever for out-witting an army of Ghasts and stealing their precious red wool from right under their... er... tears... And then I merrily skip back to the victory monument to notice but one other piece of wool missing. Curse you Kaizo Wool!!! I've even renovated every cavern into a monster-free villa and haven't seen any additional hiding spots... T-T
*eyetwitch, eyetwitch*
No lava?
*bursts into tears*
NOOO VECHS! DON'T LEAVE ME WITHOUT DEFENSE AGAINST *geustures wildly to mass of mobs under a tree* THEM!
I have a feeling you're not going to put any iron in at all, and only give tools and the block in chests.

Basically, there won't be lava, or gravel. I'll be sure to stash lots of chests around filled with arrows, so you won't have to worry about flint for arrow heads. Actually, they might be arrow turret traps you have to disarm, and then you can loot the arrows out of them. I mean, it's a jungle, there HAS to be ancient ruins, and if you have ancient ruins in a jungle, then you have to have the cliche darts-out-of-the-wall trap.
:biggrin.gif:
You will be able to mine ore, but it will be found in very unusual places. Being underground is downplayed in this map (there is no room for it, anyway), but do not fear - the massive trees of this jungle have roots that go deep into the (now imaginary) underground of Minecraft. They bring up all manner of nutrients to the trees they support, but sometimes they bring up... other things from the depths. Not all of it good...
Edit: Oh, by the way, because the forest floor is at like... depth 7, and fairly flat and wide open, it is typically covered with slimes. I love it, it makes total sense lore-wise, all the dead leaves and **** down there, the floor would be all slimy and full of rotting plant crap, the perfect place for slime blobs!
Of course, you'll have to venture down there at some point to get stone, so I'm sure it will be a very exciting trip.
One way to potentially avoid thunderstorms if they really do create a problem burning down the map would be to design the map on a desert biome. I don't think rain or thunderstorms happen as often there. It would be terrible if Minecraft burned down the entire forest (!)
Your trees look frightening.
You probably already have these ideas in mind, but in case I bring up something you missed: Will there be massive tiered pine trees where the enemies walk as though on flat land and where you drop from one level to another? Will there be Banyan trees with huge interlocking root systems that are intertwined with rock and in which you can adventure? Will there be trees that have been hollowed out by 'termites?' and in which monsters or people have built structures?

i just wanted to suggest a few of the things you just said. i.e.[*:cccol354]lack of gravel
[*:cccol354]ores in trees (you already said that some trees are hollow ad filled with mobs, right?)
[*:cccol354]almost no underground
[*:cccol354]lack of stone (be sure to keep either lava or water a treasure, else cobble will be infinite soon)
can you read my mind?
slimes on the ground and indiana jones traps are the icing on the cake, didn’t think of those!
Woot! If the forest floor is covered with slimes, not much else can spawn. Slimes are easy to fight anyway...
Still, spawners in trees, a tiny underground (awwww) NO FLIPPING LAVA, hmmm....
Sounds fun.

I wonder what evil traps Vechs has in mind for when pistons come out...
If he waits that long.
I'm imagining some sort of piston device that pushes the walls of the room inward, and you get CRUSHED! Hehe...
WANT. MAP.... WITH PISTON TRAPS. NOW.

What if they're giant? And then you split them into 16 medium ones! Or something along the lines of that... Slime filled forest. I can't wait to see this map.
When I finish that map...

I'm doing the same thing as soon as I get lava/iron.
burn baby burn.

No gravel? Nooo- wait, I hate gravel! Hooray!!!!!- oh, oh no, you don't mean no iron?!?!?!?!?! Or worse, no lava? D:
There is absolutely no way this will end in a way even remotely approaching 'well'.
Ummm 2 ways
1 gravel + 1 iron ore =
or
3 iron ore + lava
