Guide: Using Magic Launcher with Forge ModLoader, LiteLoader, Optifine, and Magic Launcher, no jar modifications required.
Follow all instructions to the letter.Read all steps at least once, then try. These instructions are written for Windows, but should easily adapt to Linux/OSX.You can BREAK your Minecraft install following this guide. You have been warned.I have tested these instructions to the best of my ability, but not everyone has the same issues.

Post screenshots if you feel they will aid in the troubleshooting.
Sections:(Use only the sections you want/need. You don't have to do all of them!)
Starting with a blank slate is the best way to do this. Shut down any launchers, and Minecraft and rename your .minecraft folder.
Get the latest Minecraft launcher here, and then run it, login and start up Minecraft. Close down Minecraft and the launcher (if it stayed open.)
Get the Forge installer from here. Last tested tested version was build 800.
Run the installer and pick the "Install Client" Option.
Open the Minecraft Launcher, and pick the Forge Profile.
Login and start Minecraft.
Verify the FML (Forge Mod Loader) installed by looking for the status text on the bottom left of the game title screen.
Return to top Installing LiteLoader with FML (chained)
Starting by completing the Forge section. If you do not see the see the on-screen status text from step 7, fix that first.
Get the LiteLoader installer from the LiteLoader thread here. Last tested version was 1.6.2-01
Run the installer and check the "Chain to Minecraft Forge" box.
Open the Minecraft Launcher, and pick the LiteLoader Profile.
Login and start Minecraft.
Verify the FML (Forge Mod Loader) is still installed and working by looking for the status text on the bottom left of the game title screen again.
Verify LiteLoader installation by watching the launcher log for lines resembling the following:
INFO: Using tweak class name com.mumfrey.liteloader.launch.LiteLoaderTweaker
In my launcher log it was about 20 lines down from the top. Return to top Installing LiteLoader (standalone)

Go to %appdata%\.minecraft\libraries\net
Create a subfolder named "optifine". Within that folder create a subfolder, again called "optifine".
Within %appdata%\.minecraft\libraries\net\optifine\optifine, create a folder whos name matches your selected version. For example, I use 1.6.2 HD Ultra B4. My folder name will be 1.6.2_HD_U_B4.
Copy the OptiFine zip file to the new folder. Change the extention from .zip to .jar
Change the underscore "_" between the word optifine and the version information to a dash "-".
It should look like this:
Go to %appdata%\.minecraft\Versions\[Forge Folder Name Here]
Make sure all copies of the Minecraft launcher and the game itself are closed.
Open the JSON file with Notepad++ or another text editor.
On or about 9 lines up from the botom of the file, there will be single closing square bracket "]". On the line just above it there will be a curly closing brace "}". Place your cursor directly after the closing curly brace. (Critical step, this is where most errors happen.)
Paste in the following code, modifying as need for your version. The first line is only a comma, you DO need it.
In the "Java Settings (Advanced)" section, enable "JVM Arguments" and add "-Dfml.ignorePatchDiscrepancies=true"
Save the profile and return to the main screen.
Launch Minecraft.
Verify OptiFine is operating by going to Options, Video Settings. There should be new options available.
Without OptiFine: With OptiFine: Return to top Adding More ModsThe vast majority of mods will work with Forge modloader, Once you have a Forge profile, you can drop mods (jar and zip) into %appdata%\.minecraft\modsThis does lead to a problem; If you connect to several servers, or have more than one "pack" of mods, Forge will always load all the mods in the folder. To overcome this, we have two methods: Creating multiple profiles (Good), or using Magic Launcher (Better). (There are other launchers, such as MultiMC, but they are not covered in this guide.)If you want to use Magic Launcher, go to the next section. If you don't want to use Magic Launcher, or Magic Launcher has a compatibility issue with one of your mods, keep reading.Mojangs launcher supports multiple profiles, and each profile can have a "Game Directory" setting. The game directory setting allows Minecraft to run from a different folder that the default of %appdata%\.minecraft. Any folder you normall see there, will also be created in any path you plug into the game directory setting. In order to keep things at least somewhat organized, I would recommend creating new game directories withing the .minecraft folder itself, and naming them either after the modpack, or some other meaningful name that describes what you put in it.As an example you could have Chococraft folder with the Chococraft mod, a minimap, and Inventory Tweaks; and an Admin folder with mods like Macro/Keybind, WorldEdit CUI,etc.Return to top Using Magic Launcher
In past builds of Minecraft, the order of the day was to open the Minecraft jar file, delete the META-INF folder, and drop in the mod files. It was quick, and pretty easy to understand. Then, Magic Launcher entered the scene. t was even more painless, you just told it where your mods were, put them in the order you wanted, and hit play. It even tried to make sure everything was compatible for you.But the times, they are a changing. Modifying the minecraft jar file now result is an unplayable game; it just won't run at all. On to of that, the default launcher now uses profiles pointed to environments that are controlled by hard to read JSON files. Confusion, disarray, and frustration are commonplace. Magic Launcher at first wouldn't work at all, and then couldn't even detect if you had Forge installed. But the wheels of progress grind on. The biggest misconception seems to be how Magic Launcher and the default launcher are tied together. this should come as no surprise; in the past there was no tie between them at all. Now however, Magic Launcher references the environments (remember those JSON files?) for its low level configuration.
To get Magic Launcher working, first you must get the default launcher working.Sorry, no two ways about it. The good news is, getting the default launcher working has gotten better. That's the primary purpose of this guide. Now for a caveat:If you want to use Forge and/or LiteLoader with Magic Launcher, you need to configure them in the environment (default launcher), not add them as mods in Magic Launcher. The reason for this is simple, but somewhat hidden; with the security signing of the minecraft jar, Forge and LiteLoader use a parameter passed to Java when the game starts. The "tweak" directive instructs java to load the code in that package before the primary Minecraft jar file. At present, Magic Launcher does not support passing the parameter manually, it must be in the environment JSON file. This doubly true when you run Forge and LiteLoader, which needs to "chain" (run one after the other) the two mod loaders (using another parameter Magic Launcher can't do manually.)To setup a configuration (more or less the same as a profile in the default launcher) in Magic Launcher:
In the Environment drop-down, select one of the environments you setup earlier.
While not necessary, I recommend going to the Advanced tab, and bumping you memory up to at least 1024 MB, but not more than 4096 MB.
On the Mods tab, if you have any mods in the mods folder, they will show up in the External Mods section. Most mods can now be moved out of this folder when you switch to Magic Launcher.
By clicking the Add button you can browse to, and select the mods you want active for this configuration. Make sure if your mod has a prerequisite, you use the Up and Down buttons to put it above the mod that requires it after you add them both to the list.
Use the Test button to launch a test session. This will quickly start a copy to make sure everything is okay. It cannot, however, connect to multiplayer servers.
If everything works okay, Click OK and have fun.
Return to top Installing OptiFine with Forge and/or LiteLoader (Magic Launcher)OptiFine is an amazing mod. While it doesn't always work for everyone, it can potentially speed up your graphics, and make the overall game look a lot better. Because of the amount of things that it does, using it with Magic launcher can require an extra step or two:
Add OptiFine to the mods list by using the Add button. Always use the Down button to place it last on the list. (Even if you have added OptiFine as a library into the environment's JSON file, add it here again.)
If you are running Forge, in the Advanced tab of the setup screen, add the following to the Parameters box:
-Dfml.ignorePatchDiscrepancies=true
That's it. (Not too bad was it?)Return to top Mods with Known IssuesIn Magic Launcher:Inventory Tweaks - Add this one to the mods folder manually, so that it is shown as an External mod. Not sure why, but crashes my game otherwise.Too Many Items - Add this one to the mods folder manually, so that it is shown as an External mod. hey 4o66,
this is just to say hi and thanks for what you've done - I learn a little (very little ) about how things work every time I do something like this. A lot of people are having dramas with optifine and mods and 162 (me included) (btw: the day when you can leave the comma out and the computer will still understand what you mean, we'll *really* be in trouble ) So thanks again for taking the time.
Pretty sure you are asking why you don't see an OptiFine version?
You won't, we added OptiFine to the Forge Version profile.
No i meant the Forge profile just vanished hen i added "name":"net.optifine:optifine:1.6.2_HD_U_B3",
"url": "http://optifine.net/" to the JSON file i just deleted my whole .minecraft i am trying again i will post my results later

Now im really lost ive done it again and the same thing is still happening
I seem to be having less and less luck with Minecraft modding - even the simple stuff. I am running Windows 7, Section Forge/Optifine and stuck on Step Number 7. I followed 1 through 6 but it looks like Forge is not installed.
To give you a little background it appears that I am having issues doing any modding. I wasn't able to get optifine to work with version 1.5 (didn't try THAT hard) and when I went to install it manually to the updated 1.6.2 I don't even have a BIN older much less a minecraft.jar. Really - its in my backup but when I wipe the install and use the new launcher it isn't there.
Is this normal? Am I in an alternate Minecraft universe and am somehow using an alternate launcher? Would love to get everything working. Help would be great.

Okay, my money is on either a missing comma or curly brace. The json file is VERY strict about formatting. Mind posting it here for review?
Basically, the last library entry needs to be optifine (unless you added litloader), so the entry before it needs a comma, but optifine's entry should not have one.

A few questions:
1. Is minecraft 1.6.2 running at all from a clean install?
2. What build of Forge?
3. Is the launcher closed when you run the Forge install?
4. How many folders do you have in %appdata%\.minecraft\versions? (Screenshot?)

http://pastebin.com/5xCT3MqkIve also tried doing it the way optifine says and it crashesNevermind, OptiFine just had an update and one of the patch notes say fixed forge compatibiity
I am running Windows 7 and having issues with installing optifine. I am using Forge build 9.10.0.789 and I followed all the directions you have given. json notepad thing and all. but for some reason optifine does not load at all. Everything else loads fine but optifine is missing. Please help. Do I need new version of forge? I checked my other mods that are running and they don't have any incompatibility with optifine. There is a magic launcher method but some mods I use or may use can be incompatible with it. I've had better luck before this dumb new launcher :/
Does this method work for the las Optifine version (B4)?
I tried this yesterday for the previous one, and it was the only way to make Optifine works with Forge (currently using 800), at least for me, after trying with all the instructions I found.
It was great, but now a new version is out and I'd like to know if you (or anyone else) have tested it yet, for this is a complicated thing to do for me, always having issues with my mods not working or having mismatches and stuff
It would be great if the method to install is the same, It would save me a lot of problems.
