I was recently asked to do kind of a private tutorial on 'how to create a skin', so I decided to do a public one.
__________
Used programs:
Gimp (www.gimp.org)
Minecraft Skin Viewer (www.minecraftforum.net/topic/274120-minecraft-skin-viewer-11-new-extended-version/)
__________
The request was:
So let's get started.
1. Start Gimp
2. Download the referece skin
>reference skin<
3. Open the skin
4. Select parts you want to change and change them, starting with the torso for instance
5. Start working with different layers in case you have to edit things afterwards
6. Draw pieces you'd like to add to the skin, like a chestplate (new layer)
7. In case you don't like the 'blocky' look of the reference skin do some smoothing by using the blur tool (left side, toolbox, drop-shaped)
8. Cover all the parts of the skin you'd like to change, continue with the legs for instance
9. Add some details, some protection, adornment
10. In case you don't like the 'blocky' look of the reference skin do some smoothing by using the blur tool (left side, toolbox, drop-shaped) [like step 7, but for Clothing]
before:
after:
11. Add some ambient occlusion [AO] (shadows on parts of the skin that are covered by others parts), for instance on the shirt under the chestplate, by using the burn tool (selected in the picture)
Try so select as accurate as possible, it makes things easier
Now the different layers pay off
12. Add some light to specific places, to give it a more 'realistic' look, like reflecting metal
13. You may add some more details, a belt for instance
I didn't like the belt very much, so I covered it with fur
14. Add a headdress
The request was a helmet, so we're going to need a pattern for the headparts
15. Draw the basic shape
16. Highlight edges by using the dodge tool
17. Do some shading
I'm using two different ways of shading:
- transition from transparency to black (different shapes: linear, bilinear, circle...)
- burn/dodge tool
18. Try to do smooth transitions
19. Finally: Have a look at the result.

So why did you even start a request? You can't have a custom skin without buying minecraft.
I think I'll try making a skin with the instructions, I'll let you know how it turned out
You'll usually find me in the General Off Topic section. Also quote when you reply so I can see!
I know it's four years late, but you have my complete and utter respect, as well as my humble gratitude. This is exactly what I was looking for! =D
