Welcome to the WIP thread for the revival of my texture pack Distant Anomaly.
For newcomers, Distant Anomaly is a scifi re-imagining of Minecraft. The resource pack will transform Minecraft into an alien planet ripe for exploration.
As of Version 3, I no longer work on this resource pack, but a handful of fan contributors continue to update this texture pack while I simply maintain the thread.
All the spaceships I'm going to attempt to build with this and then get lazy!
Also, on the grid system.
I think there should be some objects that 'break' the grid, possibly being more vertical-oriented. Mainly to use as "breaks" in the patterns. (Allowing them to separate rooms and such where needed.) My first thoughts are possibly Obsidian, or Bricks.
I remember this very well, I liked how you had different names and stories to go with the textures. Glad to see you're back. Just out of curiosity, why not use your old thread?
I found "hardened wool" in the description to be funny, is it wool or hardened clay?
First off, here's some thumbnails of blocks that I did while away from the computer. I like to do little sketches like this just to get an idea of what I'll be working on when I get home. A lot of the time I didn't think these through enough and they either don't tile good or don't connect how I thought they would. That doesn't really matter, though, since I do them in a large quantity and can make adjustments where needed.
Right now I'm in the that process of seeing what works and what doesn't. These will be used for the new logs/planks and any other metal textures I need to do like clay and bricks. I want to have all the metal textures finished (or old ones adjusted with the grid system) for the next release.

Not sure about the vertically-oriented part, as commonite and most metals will be vertically oriented. The hardened bricks are horizontally-oriented to make them stand out against the normal commonite, and because it looks better as stripes.
Also, my "grid" system is poorly named. My textures don't need to match the grid completely, just connect to the corners of it. Examples of that above in the thumbnails I did.
I get what you mean by having breaks. I'd like most textures to connect, although they will have different darker or lighter elements to contrast them a bit. Logs I think will have an outline around them so they will appear to connect, but actually stand out well. You'll see what I mean when I get around to them.

Ah the lore, its coming back in some quantity or another when I finish this. As for why I made a new thread:
A: I'd like this to be in Texture Discussion where it should have been in the first place. This takes the pressure off me having to produce download links in "updates". Mostly I'll just talk about what I'm doing and show you with screenshots. Then every once and a while I'll give you guys a link.
B: Simply put, it makes me feel better about working on it. The last post was cluttered with a lot of posts and half-baked lore that changed constantly, and that was supposed to be the legit thread! At least it makes sense to talk about that kind of WIP stuff here in Texture Discussion. For some reason starting a new thread makes me feel like I'm starting fresh on this, even if I'm using the old pack as a base.
I've been thinking about different aliens and I had a couple of ideas about different species.
I was thinking that the undead mobs could be some sort of alliance working together to defeat the other species, the Wither boss being their ultimate weapon.
The Silverfish and Spiders would be one species. The Silverfish being the larvae, Cave Spiders being the nymphs, and the Spider being the adult form.
Endermen would become a psychic species that alters your mind to make you think they are somewhere they aren't, explaining the teleportation.
Slimes would naturally be amorphous masses of bacteria.
Creepers would have a hive mind, bursting their bodies to release toxic material and doing anything to protect their territory.
I think you should keep the Nether as the moon and make the zombie pigmen a species that wanted to avoid the battles being waged over the planet. The pigmen mine the moon for resources to export to their homeworld, to mine they use floating machines that fire projectiles (Ghasts) destroying the terrain and digging huge caves out of the moon.
Finally the villagers would be a species that attempts to trade with everyone, but is under attack by the alliance I mentioned earlier. They built the Iron Golems to protect themselves.
I hope you take these ideas into account, you have probably thought of several of them before but I decided to say some of my ideas. Thank you for reading this.

I like most of these ideas and a few of them I have thought of doing before.
The undead mobs will almost certainly be an alliance of mobs just like they were last time. This time around, instead of being engaged in a war, its more like they are the "raiders" who don't like sharing this new world and refuse to do so peacefully.
Spiders and Silverfish could be a single species, but I may need to keep the control chip idea for the spider. Unless we find something else and change the wolves.
The Endermen idea is interesting, but I like the idea that they are actually teleporting because it makes sense with the items you craft and loot from them. For instance the Ender pearls that allow you to teleport.
Yes on creepers and slimes.
I knew the zombie pigmen were going to have to change, and that they would need to be some sort of pacifist species. Miners is a good idea, because the Moon is out of the way and contains a few key resources. I like the idea for Ghast.
You could always make wolves enemies of the undead, that way providing them with proof that you killed the undead makes sense as a means to ally yourself with the wolves.
Decided to tinker with the sand a bit today, I need your opinions on it. I tried to stay consistent with the simple style that the metal blocks have, with outlines and highlights:
Sorry for the lack of updates, I've been busy with work the past couple of days. However, progress is certainly still being made, mostly in the form of ideas so far.
Here's a summary of what I've figured out/thought up:
- I don't think there is any way to get wavy sand to tile. I looked at other packs and they tile on 3 sides (top, front, right), just like mine does, but then they don't tile on the back, bottom and left sides. The reason it looks acceptable on theirs is because of the method of shading. The dark outlines I use make this error more pronounced, but at the same time those outlines are required to make it fit within the style of the pack. So I'll look into this some more later, but I'm dropping it for now.
- I plan on getting a first release to you guys. Ideally I'd like it to contain all the wood/planks, stone, bricks, etc. All of the blocks that are metals. I'd also like to adjust certain items and fix the gui. I'll have a better idea of when I can get a release out soon, but like I said in the OP this topic is mainly to track my progress; updates are secondary.
- Wood will still be metal and seperated into four styles. Planks are called panels and logs are called columns. Ex: oak wood is vent column. So far I have Vent and Jigsaw styles, but I'm not entirely sure either of these roll off the tongue enough. I'd like to do a pipe column/panel as well but I'm having trouble making it tile AND look good. I know all of that sounds confusing, but if you understood it maybe you can offer suggestions as to what the four types of plank/log should look like and be called.
- Now that I have lots more textures than I had before, Mossy Cobble and Cracked Stone Brick and blocks like that can actually be mossy or rusted versions of that block now. Before I tried to make them their own block. Mossy will be covered with vines/moss and Cracked will probably be rusted.
- Blocks of ore will be cargo crates. I really like this idea. If you take stacks of the diamond per say, and form a block, you would craft a cargo crate containing those diamonds. A block of coal will be a fuel canister.
- There will be two versions of this pack. The only difference will be purely visual. The first will be a "warm" version, using tans, reds, greens and colors like that. That way I can actually come up with color palettes for the blocks and make everything look nicer. The second will be a "cool" version, using light blues, greens, etc. I won't start working on this until at least after I get you guys the first release. More on this later.
Maybe you should remove the little flame animations for the torches. It kinda takes away from the whole futuristic blue lamp thing.
gah I think I'm most excited about the completion of this pack than any other. Will you be putting sounds with it?
I plan on changing the torch. Really that was one of the first textures I ever did for this pack back when it started (almost a year ago). I'll take out the flame and make the torch more like a white flare, like the ones they would put around airplane roadways.
I will definitely be putting sounds in it. The new resource packs were one of the main things that convinced me to return to this project, I wouldn't waste potential like that! However, I'm not a sound designer and I don't pretend to be. Hopefully when this thread gains more awareness I'll attract the idea of someone who is. I'd like to get a collection of sound/music from several different people.

Thanks!
Thanks! Can't wait to finish them
Yeah, that would be great! I'll probably do this tomorrow, depending on when I get home.

You should be able to copy/paste this into your sig for it to work:
Also, progress on some of the blocks. These are all planks/logs.
But it's still good none-the-less.
