Tired of the texturing the same blocks over and over again? Sick of restrictive palettes that are difficult to work with? Just rather spend time on a pack that you actually intend to complete? Then this contest is for YOU!
Welcome to Mob Menagerie May, where... well... the name kinda explains the whole thing doesn't it? You make mob textures. You post screenshots. Everything is awesome.
CONTEST RULES!
The basic rules are simple:
● Make Mob Textures
● Post Screenshots
● Be awesome
But that's not all. Mob textures are HARD, and you deserve to be rewarded for your work.
● Every mob texture after the fifth gets you a bonus vote!
By completing six or more mob textures you earn bonus points that go towards your "score" which will be a combination of your votes and the bonus for quantity. That means you have to balance the quantity of textures you create against the quality of those textures. Not so simple now, eh?
But for rules sticklers, here's some extra rules and rulings to keep things fair. You might want to read them:
● You MAY create textures for an existing pack (either your own or another with the original author's consent) or something completely separate from any existing pack.
● You MAY texture in any style. Nothing is banned so long as it falls within the forum rules.
● You MAY texture in any resolution. Higher-resolution textures are more likely to get votes, but low-resolution textures are quicker to make and thus more likely to net you bonus points.
● You MAY create textures for vanilla Minecraft OR any mod that has mobs.
● You MAY use a different style for every mob you texture, but a single style is more likely to look good to voters.
● There is a one-texture minimum to enter. There is no maximum.
● Alternate textures ARE allowed but only unique textures will count towards bonus points. If it's obvious you've reused material between textures (including from mobs already in an existing pack) they will not count towards your score. For example, different colors of horse will generally be considered a single texture, but a skeleton horse would be separate from a white horse... unless it's obvious you just cut out the white horse texture into bone shapes.
● Bonus points are awarded per mob, not per texture. A spider is a single mob even though it has two textures associated with it.
● Only MOB textures are allowed. If it doesn't move around or interact with the player of it's own volition, it's not a mob. (Rulings will be handled on a case-by-case basis)
● Bucket-fill and grid textures are NOT allowed. Minimum-effort textures would be very easy to abuse due to the bonus points system. If it looks less complex or detailed than the mobs in Mint Flavor then they're not allowed. It is at the sole discretion of Alvoria whether or not something violates this rule. If you're worried that this might be an issue for your style, ASK!
● A cap on bonus points may be implemented at Alvoria's discretion if a small number of contestants create enough textures that there is no longer any realistic chance of others winning. Any such cap will still guarantee a lead to those with the most points and may be changed or removed as other contestants close the gap. The idea is to incentivize quantity, not to make quality irrelevant. This rule will only be invoked in extreme circumstances, so don't worry about doing a lot of work if it suits you to do so.
● Addendum #1: Please no shaders in screenshots. Because the people who vote may not be texture artists themselves, the use of shaders offers an unfair advantage. Please let your work be judged on its own merits.
● Ruling #1: If Minecraft (or a mod) forces you to draw part of the texture from another source, that does not count as reusing assets so long as the rest of the texture is unique only to that mob.
Oh, and in case it wasn't clear from the title, this contest ends at Midnight on May 31st, 2016.
Always remember, the REAL goal of this contest is for us all to improve as artists... and to stop procrastinating on making mob textures for our packs. Feedback, critiques, and constructive criticism are greatly appreciated in this thread. •
I need to ask clarification on my style, if it's detailed enough to be valid? my mobs so far have been fairly basic so far due to colour constraints, resolution and limb uv issues. I'll be willing to add more detail to future mobs to meet contest and personal standards, mobs are hard.
I'd say they're fine, though definitely a bit of an edge case. It wouldn't hurt to have them a little bit more detailed, particularly to use up some of the space in those large fields of solid color, but if that's the best you can do with your palette without making them excessively noisy or altering the style from the rest of the pack then I'm OK with it.
If nothing else, try to focus on mobs that you feel that you can make more detailed textures for. Monsters might be better than peaceful mobs in this regard.
Well, I made an Enderman. Hopefully by the end of the contest I can have some mob lore written up, but for now, something about an old race that yearned for knowledge, and used said knowledge to further their power and abilities, being cursed to the end and blighted with blindness, to be forever watched by the Ender Dragon, skin and flesh turning stonen and tough, and gems/crystals forming in the cracks and crevices of their spines.
Sort of spitballed that throughout the creation. Not necessary, I suppose, but I should probably say something before showing an eyeless, glowing-spined enderman.
I've always said that if the person who organizes a challenge doesn't participate then it's not as much fun. In spite of the fact that I'm kind of a wreck right now, I'm getting my texture on and participating in this thing. Aw yea!
To start with, here's some boneheads I met in a cave recently:
Because of the limited color palette, the basic bony version blends in really well with the stone. Like, a little too well. So as a result I followed the fine example of the wonderful people in this thread and decided to do some randomization. In this case, I made a slightly decrepit suit of iron and chain and had pieces appear on them at random. No, those aren't the normal armors for the pack... and thinking about it this will probably look really bad when the fake armored versions spawn in regular armor. Um... is it too late to change my mind?

The one thing that I would suggest is more contrast. Right now other than the glowing spine there aren't a lot of details. I had to really look to see which side of its head was the face, to be honest. Still, a very cool if somewhat basic design.
First I cut off the front limbs of the dragon and made it a wyvern, then I textured it with 12 colours.
I... really wish I'd remembered to put "no shaders in your screenshots" in the extended rules. It's the kind of thing that offers an unfair advantage since it makes your screenshots look better regardless of what your textures look like.
Anyone mind if I slip that in to the extended rules real quick?
But as to the texture, it looks really good. I adore the orange wings with the red coloration. The whole thing looks so fiery. Notch once said that a red dragon would eventually be added to Minecraft. While I doubt that it'll happen, if it did I'd love to see it look like your texture. Very cool!
Others have picked some cool mobs to start with while so far I have a squid.
But they're cool looking squid.
I particularly like what you did with the tentacles. The uneven textures makes them feel rough and like they're actually movable limbs. That and the brow on the face remove the smoothness that's usually seen in squid textures. I really like what you've done!
finished the wither. I tried to make him look as original as possible.
Oh that's just creepy. It looks like a lesser Lovecraft style creature. I'm imagining the 'ribs' are actually tentacles sticking out of a very skinny body. Great work!
Tried transparency with the ender dragon, did not work. Did work on the enderman though (unintentionally arms and legs showed up.) . My enderman is a ghost, and the end is the end of man. But since enderman can teleport, some haunt the earth at night. No shaders on this picture , although my dragon had a no shader picture above the shader one. Getting heavy influences from Game of Thrones.
While my skeletons aren't as spooky as Alvoria's, its all I could get out of vanilla resolution and 4 colours. Also really despise the dullness of the vanilla skeleton colours so I made them more creamy. Made another copy of the skull as a helmet to add depth to the eyes and jaw. Will probably make variants but just for my pack not the challenge. Pumping out whatever texture I can cause I won't have my computer for around 3 months
I think I'm going to make a point to do villagers for this contest. It'll probably kill me on points, but it'll be the first time I have a set of villagers without any reused parts. Might be a nice change of pace for me.
Because I'm working on Regalia for this contest, I'm having to look through a lot of old notes and things from back when this was a collab. Malcolm at one point suggested that I have masked villagers. At the time it didn't seem like that great of an idea, but I'm kinda warming up to it with this guy. The whole "owl priest" thing really gives it a different sort of feel from the usual villagers that I do. Hopefully I'll think of inventive ways to do the entire set.

That looks proper creepy. I like it! The glowing limbs really sell the ethereal nature of the creature. Perfect!
@Alvoria, Those Skeletons are great. That grin is unsettling, definitely wouldn't want to encounter one of those on the first night of survival. Not sure what you could do about the armour thing though, I'll think on it more.
Also thanks, I wanted the squid to look more anatomical to a real squid with the cone and beak and side flaps.
Edit: Another enderman. My enderman is a sphere of a lost soul trapped in a literal cage of ribs. The mask rises to expose the tormented soul when angered.
I might change the colour from purple after I come up with the End's theme.
Thank you! I'm glad you like the skeleton!
Your enderman looks really cool. I'm loving the lore that people are including with their entries, and this is no exception. Using the head rising as a reveal for the face is brilliant!

The skeletons are nice, though the lighting in the last two screenshots throws it off a bit. Still, I guess skeletons are usually seen in the dark and shadow so there's that. Or maybe it's the first one that's weird. Not sure. Either way, the look very dirty as though they crawled out of the ground and then tried to dust themselves off a bit before walking around. I like it!
Newest addition to the hostile mob pack, the zombie. Once saw a player skin with a brain showing so I thought I'd try that out. Zombie is clothed with some torn leather. Tried playing around with the hue of the skin between green and blue, and this colour seemed to fit best. As for the black pixel on the temple, might be an ear hole, maybe Frankenstein's monster's bolt, not sure exactly.
Pig and sheep. A shaven sheep in Minecraft looks quite horrid in my opinion, they're never really shave to the bare skin. Filled in some big areas with the simplest dithering possible.

Seeing as I just started a survival world today partially to get myself back into texturing, sounds perfect! Count me in, probably!

Everything is cool when your part of a team!
I'd love to enter this one! I've been playing skyblock and I have a bunch of mobs around to texture now.
Huh, finally a contest I might participate in. Unfortunately I already did the vanilla mods, but I can find some mod stuff.

The dragon is a large mob, so image is best viewed at actual size.

My creepy crawler spiders, care to guess which one is the poison one?
Stayed true to the 8 eyes and legs segmented into 3 parts.
One critique I have for myself is that one is just a recolour of the other with an added mark.
They also have holes in the back of the abdomen to spin webs

Well done!

That looks like one of those nope-fish that's at the bottom of the very deepest parts of the ocean. It frightens me.
But it looks cool!
For some reason it reminds me of one of those underwater mines...
