It's because of the biome colours that are applied on top. I'm not sure how to change them any more though, because I haven't played Minecraft for over two years.
Speaking of - what happened to good old terrain.png? I haven't got a clue what I'm doing when I try to put the textures in game.
My, you have been gone for a while.
The terrain.png went away shortly before the resource pack format was introduced. Since 1.5, textures appear as individual files, and are re-combined into an atlas internally when a pack is loaded. This wiki page has a list of every name of every file that resource packs can modify, and the folder structures thereof. You might find it useful.
One of the TAU people has kindly pointed out some flaws with my palette that I'd like to fix. Can I edit the palette i submitted to the challenge?
Is it okay if I use a couple recolored and slightly edited textures from when I was using Drazile's palette? I know it's against the rules but they're just a few 2-color blocks that would be pointless to redo, except to satisfy that (imo, nonsense) rule.
edit: Ringoster, love those textures. The oak log looks a little too detailed (even though it's my favorite block, would be great in another pack)
Right, well I'm bloody annoyed now since my computer is broken which means my retirement from the challenge. I'll carry on checking everyone's work >=(
Grass, dirt, stone, iron ore, coal ore, and tall grass
Using Jimmywalker's palette
In game:
The grass is a bit too wiry for my taste. Looks decent in the screenshot, though. Maybe you should shade it so as to make it more visible against the grass top. You should also shade around the ores a bit, so they don't look so pasted-on.
Today's progress:
The palette I'm using doesn't have any dull purples for Mycelium, so I made a weird alien dirt-thing with glowy pustule thingies growing out of it.

I'm a little confused. Are you talking about the grass_side?
I've changed it now. I got excited when I finally figured out how to get the browns to work, and went a lil overboard on detail.
Ooof, sorry to hear that.

The mycelium looks a bit like some off-looking cake... Not that it's a bad thing, just.... interesting...
I really like the style you've got going in this pack though, it's really cool. The shading is sort of like a pixel art equivalent of the shading used in triton. Looking forward to seeing how it looks in-game!

Feel free to edit your palette.
Textures done so far:
Love it, Meapers. What palette are you using?
Using my own palette right now, just fooling around with making textures first to make sure everything is set with the palette.
Here is my edited palette.
Okay, pixel art is calling my name again, so I've decided to reboot my current textures. Working in 16x now.
Using Fuzziechan's palette:
Do I have to submit my own palette before entering, or can I start without submitting my own
Well, the first of the contest rules states leaving a pallet is required.
You can start without submitting one, but it's preferred if you provide a palette before starting.
Is this a good palette? (First try making one :P)
(Is 44 colors too much?)
I've seen worse. xD Go ahead and start your textures.

@Malcom
Yes that is what I had in mind of doing.

I like that birch log and the ores

Thanks

Question: Do we need to make lava and water textures?
It's not required, no. I know that those are tricky to make and animate if you haven't had much practice.
New textures:
(The logs are oak and birch)
