Right, I've searched and I've seen some viewers that work on 16x skins and not a lot else.
Does anything like this exist or is in the works already??
If not.............I'm making one!!
I'm already starting to build a couple of the MOBS as 3D models as i'm sick of going back and forward into the game to test a little update or check something.
It will auto update as well so the min you save your texture as a PNG in your package of choice it will update in the viewer so really fast work flow Any size textures 16x-512x
Oh it will have ALLLLL Mobs/Skins etc i can create the lot in day or so they are so basic 3D models.
Prob will be in Java so PC/Mac friendly i'm will be speaking to a buddy of mine about jumping in on this with me.
IF this already exists PLEASE stop me rambling and point me to a link
I know there's Techne... But AFAIR it's only for making and viewing custom models. That, and i never got it working properly. You should probably check the Tools section instead
There is an HD skin/mob made already (that updates with file changes), but PLEASE still make something in Java if you can! The one I'm talking about is made in .NET, so is only on Windows and Windows Phone (ugh), and on Windows I think (iirc) it also requires .NET libraries to be installed.
Once again, if you can make it, do! Linux & Mac still need a skin viewer of the same or larger scope, and a .JAR release just like Minecraft would be perfect! Also, if you support any mobile platform, it should be Android
The creator of the other pack isn't a texture artist, but you are! Some features you could have that the other one doesn't:
ALL mobs
textures loaded and mapped EXACTLY how Minecraft does (actually use code from the game for mobs) including hat layer
function button for changes in certain mobs (sheep shorn/unshorn, enderman mouth open/closed, chiken/enderdragon/bat wing position, ghast firing/notfiring, wither boss armor, pig saddle on/off, squid tentacle position)
checkbox for overlay file (appears for spider, cave spider, enderman, enderdragon)
not just loading from .PNGs, but also .ZIPs and texture folders (once you load a pack, choose the mob to view)
mobs get items they have in-game, such as skeletons w/ bows, and zombie pigmen with gold swords, (and also armor for those mobs that support it) loads from the selected pack, if not using one, uses vanilla
If you do this, I can clarify on any ideas I put down here, or I can even beta test in Linux (assuming you go with a .JAR format). I think you should use code straight from the game to make/map mob models, not because it's easier, but because accuracy is REALLY important, and making everything yourself will not turn out the same as how it is in Minecraft (it isn't in the other skin viewer, or there were errors that had to be fixed). You wouldn't even have to distribute Mojang code, you could make it not come with it, and then have it look for the code and install it from Minecraft, and then when Minecraft updates, you can update the mobs if more are introduced/changed! So basically, you would code your program to interpret the mob files so it knew about the model, joints, textures, and overlays! It would find out what they are, so the program would not easily get outdated!

It’s the unpleasantness of the system that keeps me out.
I’d rather be in, in a good system. That’s where my discontent comes from:
being forced to choose to stay outside.
My advice: Just keep movin’ straight ahead.
Every now and then you find yourself in a different place."

Lemon, some really good input there i'm going to print out this thread and have a chat about it when we meet up next
I've got that Viewer you linked to but how do you load HD textures in it, everything I've tried just says "error wrong size" unless its default size??
The amount of options and tricks it can do will be a complexity/time trade off I really wanna get on with MOBs but I've made some progress on the 3D side of things and if so will contiune with this process.
Below you can see I've mapped the original png texture format to the 3D model anything i now change in Photoshop and hit "save" will update.
The beauty of this is (in reference to the accuracy of the models comment above) it doesn't matter if the Models are slighty different to the game as the faces of the models are now mapped to the constraints of the texture boundaries. e.g I can stretch the model in all sorts of places but the texture will always remain in its original state and will map perfectly when viewed in game.
So if this 3D tech were put into a more simple viewer then we are onto something. Adding any kind of assets i.e block showcases, new updates REALLY isn't a problem its such simple geometry and a very simple database of files to keep updated.
From one artist to another it will be visually appealing, user friendly and intuitive in its design and function from an artists perspective.
I'll make a video of the the 3D side in action, but here's a quick screen grab.
One thing all these skin viewers lack is also an option to view armor. that would be a dream for some of us who find it tricky to imagen how the armor will look on a player with out going in game. a basic block viewer would be spiffy as well.
I have something that I've been working on that's headed that way. (It started out as a pack mixer but the 1.5 changes have caused a bit of a shift in direction for it.)
HD skins will never be implemented. Jeb says it may cause lag for some people, and if you have a griefer with, let's say, 1000x1000 skin, it will crash everybody's client on the server.
A solution for single player is a texture pack. Alter the char.png in the mobs folder.
I am not sure if this is what you are talking about or not, you might just mean for a texture pack :/ Either way, I hope this helps someone out there.
MCSkin3D has options to texture mobs (and things like chests and ender crystals) and also for higher resolution skins, but when I try to use both at once, it always crashes.
Oh wow except for a weird glitch that turns my zombies into boxes, it works great! If only i'd known for chests/boats etc! would of been so much faster!
I will continue with my spider with this now......thanks for the heads up Faboo
Great I was looking for a thing like this. There are some out there for the blocks, but as far as I know, they only work with thise square blocks, so they don't have much use for me. If you can make this programme, it would be really, really great, since I wont have trouble chasing endermen or the enderdragon, to look ar my work
Hrrm... someone deleted my post from yesterday. Oh well. I was just asking if Syclone still works on a viewer?
Well we looked in to it and sat and banded about some ideas for several hours. We looked at what the time frame to make it would be and whats involved.
The main issue is the coder is not a Minecraft-er and couldn't give his time for nothing, i would do all the design/layout/presentation and basic code but for it to be a viable project for the time it would take it would have to be a chargeable product not a freebie.
So i guess what i can ask as some market research is would you guys pay for a proper piece of cross platform software that had all the tools we have been talking about (and more) as a fully fledged texture artist tool kit.....that will have room for expansion?
I'm not talking 100's of dollars if there's a call for it from many texture artists it could be very reasonable if the volume is there.
Maybe a poll would be better to gauge interest? Also we would need to get exposure for the tool-set and get the word out to all the more serious creators and the guys that put out many packs as that's the target market for this not the casuals i would of thought.
If it is something you would part money for, what would you want to see implemented and what would you pay to have a powerful all in one toolset?
Let me know your thoughts guys, i personally think there won't be enough call for it but gimme some feedback
The only worry I have with that is.. don't Mojang have in their terms that any tool using Minecraft materials.. a.k.a models and such or the likeness has to be for free? I seen a few tools already in the...tools forum that had a 'free' version, and then a 'pay to get full' version and they ended up being shut down due to such. Even that one skin viewer linked had it's content removed from an ap store just due to displaying minecraft models.

Ah well if that's a hurdle we can't overcome Taiine then of course its just a no go from the start, as of course Mojang want to protect their interests as do we all with our hard work. Hmmm that would either call for license of models or permission granted for use or even royalties paid............which would be a killer.
Possibly a small percent of sales to Mojang may be enough to satisfy........they aren't exactly running out of money I'll run it past my legal bods.
Are Mojangs terms easily obtainable? *goes to peek at site*
Meh, kind of bummed to hear you are running into issues. Now I feel even more guilty about not having worked on my own project for a while. (Been kinda hoping Mojang would put the models into a data file for the API but it hasn't happened yet.)
As for Mojang and their terms, you can find them linked at the bottom of minecraft.net http://minecraft.net/terms
The wording is a tad bit vague though so if you wanted to be 100% sure of being in the right you would have to ask Mojang directly.
Mind you, I don't think there is enough of a market to actually pay a programmer for the time it would take to make this. If the chance for a big feather in the resume cap isn't enough motivation then you are probably better off looking for a new coder.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.
If you end up making this, it will be save a lot of time for me with my texture pack. When ever I make updates I always have to go into minecraft and test it. But I wouldn't get it if it was a paid thing. I don't have the money for it.

...But that's just my opinion.
My DeviantART, requests welcome.
