Weird, the site is now back. If he plans on leaving, Rhodex should make an archive of "all" his textures( including outdated ones) and hand off the files to a new person so the pack can be preserved.
Or possibly hand off the code for the customizer to Curse team, Im sure they would love to have a way to make a texture pack customizer on their curse client.
The problem is there is no official word on whether it's being discontinued or not for over a year there has been minimal activity since his last update tweets.
Perhaps contacting Rhodex by e-mail for confirmation would be good.
I've been a big fan of this resource pack ever since the Minecraft Alpha days. It was the horrible, horrible original cobblestone MC texture that turned me away from the vanilla minecraft textures and Painterly was one of the first texture packs I found. Though I like to browse other texture packs, I've used Painterly exclusively. I really like the variety that is offered - that's one of the big pulling points of the pack itself - and I really like the charm that a 16x16 texture pack like Painterly has.
I also sent Rhodox an email and a tweet. I'm hoping he gives us a heads up as to what's going on.
That's pretty much the same reason I've been keeping track of this still.
Made the switch to Painterly way back in November 2010 and never looked back. No other texture packs that have come and go since then has been able to replicate Painterly's level of customization and 16x16 low-fi aesthetics.
If Painterly is dead in the water, it looks like I don't have incentive to play the game anymore. No way I'm moving back to the ugly default pack, and most current quality custom packs cater primarily to 32x32 resolutions and higher, too ill-fitting for the low-resolution voxel world design.
I don't mind 32x32 texture packs; I think that they can be really nice and they've still got that "pixelated" look. I'm a big fan of Dokucraft, DustyCraft and a few other 32x32's.
I have used Dokucraft before for its quality pixel art textures but 32x32 and above just looks off. Their resolutions are high enough to accentuate the ugly blockiness of the world, something a lot of Minecraft clones try too hard to beautify their games with but backfire when they look like poorly modeled 3D games up close. It gets worse when you throw in a high screen resolution and shader mods. They just end up looking like window dressing for what is fundamentally a crude design choice.
I was drawn to Minecraft exactly because of the low-res textures and its perfect fit with that blocky voxel design, and anything that compromises with that concept undermines that visual balance.
I might try out the BNW pack, but again, I have to take into account the level of customization as well.
I "made" a couple of textures for 1.9 using various assets within the painterly pack. I may share it. So far I got these textures done:
Purpur Block
Purpur Pillar
End Bricks
Frost Blocks
Beet Crops
Chorus Fruit (corn)
Popped Chorus Fruit (pop corn)
Beets
Beet Seeds
Ender Crystal Item
Shulker
Shield
There's a couple of missing things and clocks and compasses are beyond me (why were they changed?). I might be able to do boats. Chrous plant blocks are detailed enough to not need a new texture (they're also too unique to recreate). Here's some pictures of the new end blocks. If you guys would like a download for a my 1.9 texture patch I could upload one until we get some official news.
Minor update - I've fixed up the interface and inventory stuff that was added in 1.9, including the new status icons and alchemy interface and such, and I've cleaned up some of the blocks. Haven't touched any of the new nether stuff, though.
OH, I've noticed that the new boats just use your wood texture - I just left the new folder empty and they look nice

Ooh, can I have those? I too have been working on a Painterly 1.9 patch. Perhaps we could team up. Also I'm pretty sure the boats have unique textures. If I just had a template of the new texture layout then I think I could come up with something.
It seems we may have to wait for an update if we get an update at all. But at least it's official news.

I'd be happy to. I actually went ahead and finished up my own 1.9 patch for painterly, but I've also done some modification of the original textures in the pack as well to better suit my taste - which is a BIT more in-line with the original minecraft textures. I can link you a DL and you can grab what you'd like. I'm no artist, so quality isn't guaranteed

I did something similar along those lines. Just PM me a DL or post it here for others to use. I may post my own as well.
There ya go.Thats what I'm using - mostly painterly stuff, but like I said, a few personal modifications to be more in line with vanilla, and then 100% lots of tweaks to the armor stuff (still mostly a WIP).
EDIT: Forgot to mention, i Haven't touched the clock or compass at all. I'll be doing that eventually though. They were changed from like 12 steps to a shitton, so it might take a while.
oo, very nice.
I kept checking Painterly's website in hopes that he had something to tell about the 1.9 update.
I hope the site is just down because there's updates being done, but... Otherwise, it seems like the end of an age.
This saddens me.

I've tried contacting Rhodox with no luck. I hope we get some kind of news.
Praise be to Spode.

Try taking a look at this pack and pulling textures from it. I believe the author had contributed a few textures to Painterly. http://www.planetminecraft.com/texture_pack/a-brave-new-world-seasonal-rotating-texture-pack-with-holidays/

Really hoping Rhodox comes back..
If rhodox doesnt, I've got textures I'd be willing to contribute. I've been on a modified painterly pack since forever ago - I'm sad to see it go

We have an update from Rhodox: https://twitter.com/PainterlyPack/status/721203991829327872
It says:

At least he's sticking around with the project.
Life has priority. He can take his time with it.

This is the clock and compass I use from the Painterly Pack.
I managed to work them into the 1.9 format and I've uploaded the files here: http://www.filedropper.com/painterlypack19clockcompass
AWesome, thanks so much
