I am always in a constant battle with those saying that a more natural "rockier" texture of stone is better than a "smoother" one. In my opinion the "rocky" type texture only looks good whilst your running in those underground caverns caves, but what about when your building with it (a castle looks better made out of smoother stone!); really the stone should look better than the cobblestone seeing as you have to smelt the cobble to get it.
Now i am in the midst of creating my texture pack (a 16X16 RPG pack) i'd like to know what you fellow minecraftians prefer. Should i stick with the smooth stone, or is it that more natural looking stone you guys prefer; I suppose I'll will have to let the poll decide.
I voted natural but only cause I like mine to look a bit of both (but not really smooth)
Most important thing to me is that it tiles flawlessly and the ores use the stone as their base texture. So it's all natural looking weather it's smooth or more rough.

it's just that if the stone looks more rocky/natural, the cobblestone usually looks better than the stone. When that happens people will find no reason as to smelt their cobblestone back into stone.

Well...approach it from a builder's standpoint then. make it so they are different but accent each other. Myself and quite a few people I build with use both very often.
I do see what you are saying, but I'm also a more square cobble kinda guy. I don't think I've ever liked the basic cobble look. Slate/brick/square cobble looks best to me on castles and such. The more round cobble looks best for roads or pavement.

I like stone better on Default for building things. I use texture packs time to time, but stone is good on almost everything i use. I do use cobblestone to build as well, especially for early versions of structures i'm making. Smooth stone seems better to me if i'm building something large. Like a castle, or tower i want to use smooth stone since most stuff people build don't want to see cracks, or un-polished stone. It just ruins the moment of seeing something big then imagining how long it took, then if you see cobblestone as the only thing on the outside, it makes you think: Wow, even though this is huge, it kinda doesn't have a superior feeling that structures should have.

So do you suggest a slated "normal" stone and a rounded cobblestone?
I think cobblestone should look rough, but not un-polished. It shouldn't be like dokucraft cobblestone, nor should it be (This is my own opinion. I'm sorry, but this is how i think)the ugly cobblestone of default textures. It should be like one you would see of a wall. Like a village wall that protects it from the outside should be thick, sturdy, looks like it won't fall down after a year or two or attacks, and looks like it wasn't made for decoration. Stone should look like the grand feeling a palace of a king should have. It's like cobblestone, but very neat looking and supports the heavy materials inside the palace walls.

I agree with Bad also. Stone just makes a cool structure if the texture is done well. But it should look like stone. Most of all, you should like how it looks more than what anyone else thinks. Always bugged me when I did textures based on what others said

Here's my stone and cobble for an idea of what I like:

The doku cobblestone is much too light for my liking, i personally rather the gerudoku version
Oh, i thought originally the gerudoku stone came from doku? Well anyway, i don't like how light dokucraft's stone looks. It seems... very un stone like?

Hmm... I think dokucraft's stone is basically centered on only using cobblestone to build with. That stone is actually very good for when your mining, it gives the proper feel.

I prefer smooth! But natural is okay as long as there is a clear contrast between stone and cobblestone. In some packs they're really hard to tell apart. John Smith has great stone that looks rough but still relatively flat (if that makes any sense)

Does anyone think this stone is any good?
