I would like to thank everyone for their support and suggestions. I would like to list every single one of you here, but I won't, because you know who you are that's all that matters. Plus, pretty much everyone that's posted on this thread so far would be on the list.
Adobe Photoshop CS3 - Admittedly it's rather old, but has always been there for me, except for those times it likes to randomly freeze up on me and make me lose hours of work.
Actually, because this is nothing like anything I've seen before, I'm really looking forward to trying this out!
From the couple of screen shots above, my only recommendation is to make grass, slightly orangy-er, because at the moment, it looks a lot like dead grass. And if it were a bit more orange, it would fit nicely with smoothstone and, I think, look a more alieny.
Other than that, really looking foward to it! Nice work.
Yeah, I didn't get the desired biome colors on the my first try, I hope to have that fixed sometime tomorrow. Thanks so much for your response~
Looks like some parts of Australia :|
Not exactly mars, but still cool!
I think you should completely remake textures instead of just a re-colour. It would help make it more alien!

The closest I've been to Australia is from listening to Yahtzee from The Escapist. Although, after Googleing Australia, I do see the resemblance. The inspiration for this pack actually came from Painterly's 'all-american Oklahoma ochre' dirt.
Anyway, I definitely plan to remake all of the textures and icons, but for now, I just want to concentrate on colors and basic designs until I feel that the colors and designs will work well together.

Well I'm as close as you can get, given that I live there :wink.gif:
(in Melbourne so not really an area with dirt that colour, but yea)
That seems reasonable! Are you planning to re-skin items to match the marsian theme?
[...]That seems reasonable! Are you planning to re-skin items to match the marsian theme?
I sure do. I just got done editing the buckets to look like capsules, but still need to fix them up a bit. I have a couple of other ideas for some items, but I'm not quite sure what I want to do for the rest.
[edit]
Buckets and dyes, I think I need to add a bit more shading to the top and bottoms of the dyes, and fix the center shading on the buckets.
Very interesting idea. I've actually played several times trying to pretend I'm on mars by playing in a desert, hence my never underestimate the value of dirt sig tag, and was always wondering if there were a texture pack for it. I'll be watching this thread.
Since the reason Mars is red is because it is so iron rich I suggest making the iron texture look really Iron rich, like big chunks. Also add a bit more brown and gray to the stone texture for some realism. Cobblestone looks good though.

Hmm, alright, I'll see what I can do. Thanks for the input.
Sorry to continually critique but I this thread doesn't seem to get much attention from anyone else.
It's fine, the more help the faster I'll probably get this done. Plus, I haven't even released a download link and I've no idea how many people would even be interested in this pack, so I don't expect people to even remember it was around by the time I'm finished with it.
Anyway, I did the flowers and mushrooms to look like really awkward rocks, but I'm not so sure how well it turned out. I think I need to redo them. I'll see what I can do about the grass though.
I like it a lot, it really does give a nice otherworldly feel to Minecraft that you don't see with most packs. If I could make a suggestion, maybe you could tint the water differently? I don't know why but it does look a bit odd next to the bright red soil and stone. I'm not saying make it as orange or red, but maybe a lighter shade of blue, or something paler? This is just my opinion though so feel free to disregard.

All suggestions are welcome. But yes, water is most definitely on my to-do list.
Thanks for the suggestions and feedback everyone, I appreciate it.

I will definitely be keeping an eye on this texture pack. Nice work so far! I have a few suggestions, if you don't mind:
Since most of Mars' red-ness comes from the layer of iron on the surface, maybe you could use grass for that role? It would make the ground look redder. The current dead grass stuff seems out of place to me.
Underground, Mars would just be igneous rock, so the red down there doesn't make much sense. Combined with my above idea, I think you should colour smoothstone dark grey/black.
Martian sand is mostly made of the same dark rock as the planet itself. Satellite images display this as a deep purple, which might be a neat idea. (Purple beaches!)
Brown water and ice would be awesome.
- I already have a couple of alternate biome colors. I plan on making a couple more red ones in addition to the first red one I made.
- It seems to come in a variety of colors, so I'll be sure to include some alternates.
- That's an interesting idea, I'll be sure to include some alternates.
- Hopefully it doesn't look like ****, pun intended.

Been checking back here every so often, what I'm seeing I really like!
My suggestions right now are pretty much the same as everyone else's.
Good work so far.
I'm glad to hear it. No more updates tonight/today/whatever though, I am super tired.
Well...this will be my first texture pack, as well as my first attempt at pixel art.
Suggestions/comments/criticism/etc. are very much welcome.

I'm going to cap your castle!
Anyway.
I decided to try to do Cobblestone and Stone. I tried with a bit more light in there, but it didn't seem to look very good, I don't know about this.
[edit]
Tinkered around, I think I fixed both Stone & Cobblestone. Screenshot section updated.
Edit:
heres an example of some martian terrain.

v Feeble attempt at rocks.
v Fairly plain.
v I think this turned out really well, though it doesn't have as much tan in it as I had hoped.

One suggestion? Stone and Cobble stone look a little too much alike, and maybe you could change mobs some more. Make some of them green?
Still, good job.
