Hay guy's. I just recently started trying to teach my wife how to play minecraft. But as with most games (I used to play the crap outta MW2 and Black Ops) her visual impairments make it harder for her to play and get into the game. I did some looking but I couldnt really find anything to match what she was needing.
Basically if a color is close together on the color wheel she cant tell the difference.
yellows, blues and greens blend in, oranges and reds n junk too.
Also things like coal really throw her off . The gray seems to blend in with the black up until she walks close to it. She also cant really tell the difference between stone and dirt, one just looks like a lighter shade of something then the other.
It's hard to explain because she cant really explain it either. She's always had the problem and just dealt with it.
I havn't seen anything but does anyone know of a texture that has more distinct ore symbols? Heck even letters would work if there was enough contrast. (A D on the side of a white block for dirt would probably be best er something).
If any body knew of a way to make the equipment bar and inventory bigger that would be awesome as well. I'd appreciate the help if anybody has any leads.

Hmm. Also it depends on the type of 'Color Blind'ness she has.
You should try a few of the larger tex packs (32x32+) and see what she says about them.
Then have her pick some colours that she would like to use that would help a person make this.
Can think of a few things that may work but am not able to test. If nobody tries to make the pack in the next while I'll take a stab however you both would need to do a lot of testing.
This sounds like an interesting project, actually.
You say she can't distinguish between different colors that are close. Is it that she perceives it all in grayscale, or does she actually perceive colors but is lacking some level of distinction (e.g., red/green colorblind)? And is full contrast by light (white/black) or full contrast by color wheel (orange/blue) pretty easy for her?
And if she does perceive colors, which colors are most appealing to her? Does she prefer primaries (like kiddie toys), pastels (probably not, but just checking), earthtones (again... might not be good at distinguishing these), etc.? And which major color(s) most appeal to her (e.g., I tend to favor blues and greens with some purple)?
You've got me thinking about trying to craft a, entirely grayscale set. But I'll be honest with you: My most prevalent trait is procrastination, so don't take this as a "wow, someone's on the job, I'm sure it'll be ready in a week" or whatever. It's unlikely I will finish and post such a pack... however, I would like the information in case I pursue this. And maybe the information, posted here, would help someone else who's more likely to finish such a project.
Thank you :smile.gif:
ETA 0: From a couple minutes looking up color blindness, it seems like blue/yellow contrast is big even with other types of contrast gone. If the game were contrasting these two (blue coal on yellow background), would she be able to see it pretty well?
ETA 0.5: Ooh, maybe even better: Go to this page, and tell me which of the shapes provides the best contrast for her. That should make for a decent idea of colorization.
ETA: Also, would she be interested in the sort of pack where you see there's something worth mining, but don't know what it is until you dig it up? Then you could have one single "cool thing to dig up" design instead of five or more.
ETA 2: Also, from my experience with what I call the "Cheater" pack (everything see-through except lava, water, and valuables): You can sorta tell the different between blocks just by the sounds, and by how fast your pick/shovel digs through them. I dug straight down through nearly invisible blocks until I hit bedrock, and was able to switch to the right tool no problem just by paying attention to the sounds. I'm sure I could do it with my eyes closed.
You can't really tell gravel from dirt or stone from sandstone (except sandstone digs up faster I think) by sound... then again, environment determines where sandstone is, and you can dig around and under dirt/gravel to tell which one it is by whether or not it falls. Also, I don't think you'd be able to tell smooth stone from cobblestone except I think smooth stone digs up faster... so you'd lose that cue of "oops, I'm near lava/monster generator" if going just by sound.
But anyway, it's worth thinking about.

My YouTube channel is currently on hiatus, but I hope to get back to it at some point. Content is fairly random, but can be enjoyable, and is mostly game footage (mostly random Minecraft clips) from my nephews and me. Most popular MC vid so far is the one Vechs laughed at on Twitter!
I know someone who was working on a Colorblind pack. I've poked him and pointed him in this direction. Hopefully he'll pop up.
It sounds like an interesting challenge to take up though. I think if every block had a unique pattern that didn't rely on colors, that might make for a more enjoyable experience for your wife.
I was, at one point in time, working on a colorblind pack, but I've kinda moved away from it.
Instead of the standard Ores textures, I replaced them with block letters.
Doing a little bit of research, I've found this texture pack, which might be right up the alley you're looking for. If the White and Blue is too close together, you can use an image editing program to shift the hues in the appropriate direction so that your Wife can see the difference.
Yay, 3rd edit: That pack I linked above is related to this one: viewtopic.php?f=25&t=40546 which might also be extremely useful as it's a white/black pack with symbols.
(Please note that neither pack has been updated to include the new 1.3_01 textures, so you might have to do some manual editing with your Wife, to choose something she can use.)

errmm.. wouldnt gold just be a square since the 2 yellows would blend?
Sounds like she has a deuteranomaly. I have one, too. It's not too much trouble for me though. Some reds and greens look alike, blues and greys, whites and pinks, etc.
There is a fan update for Nurio's Splotchblock that should help with some forms of colorblindness. I'm not sure about the type your wife has, though, as this was made more for those with simpler colorblindness. All ores have different patterns, so once you learn them it's easy to tell.

That BillyCraft pack in the sig looks like it would be good for your wife...
also, but i don't know if it really is good, you may want to try out my texture pack - SimplePak - although i don't know if its the right thing, but i like it, it has high visibility for ores, ladders and rails, and it's quite bright...
JUST TRY IT!

She actually has this rare eye thingy, It's a bit more developed then the color blindness thing. I think that's why she has trouble with the black on the gray of the charcoal.
She said that when she was a kid her and her sister would try to put M+M's in the color piles. (Her sister has it too) They would have trouble differentiating between the browns and red's, and the yellows and greens.

Yours looks exactly like what I was thinking, the guy with simplecraft looked promising too as well as the above ascii one. Thank you guys for all your help I'm off to other threads to figure out how to make em work.

She couldnt really tell much between the individual shapes. The colors in the shapes were pretty much too close to being the same for her. (We had to mark all of our UNO cards with letter for the color so she could play) She also has to have a lot of light so she can see the difference between the red and black checkers.
That's kinda it atm. I only have a little bit of time after work to jump on here and less time to mess with minecraft. Hopefully I'll be able to try some stuff out and post what helps and what doesn't help. Appreciate it guys.
