you know you could make iron ore the Riveted Iron Plates. having iron ore as the the plates would, first get rid of the burning forever issue that netherstone has, next next it is harder to mine then normal rock which would make since, third i think having iron ore as iron plates would fit the theme better, and lastly you could do something similar to gold ore.
though the only real problem i see is when you are in a cave it would look strange and out of place, but i still feel it fits better as an iron plate then netherstone.
i really enjoy you texture pack and i hope, my 2cents helped.

Not only would it look vastly out of place in caves, but it would require an inventory editor to be able to place them. I use inventory editors to test out designs sometimes, but I never use them in a world where I actually want to play, and I never show off anything I made with an inventory editor. I believe I am not alone here.
you can place iron ore without an inventory editor. i think your thinking red stone ore and diamond ore; or iron and gold ingots. have you actually tried placing them?
unsmelted iron and gold ore are replace-able after you mine them.
i can't argue that it wouldn't looks out of place in a cave.
i'm just throwing random idea out there, the last one i have is making mossy cobblestone iron plates, but that comes with its own issues.
@ Seiseki: I agree about the glass too. The things I've done are adhoc cosmetic solutions to valid building elements, when really, if at all possible, it would be more ideal to have a seperate transparent block or flat panel serving the role of a girder material. However, I just can't see Notch going that far. Though as you've said before, when a proper system of mod implimentation is introduced, all things become possible for those who want to take Minecraft in different directions.
@ Leon: That's an interesting point, but using iron ore would seriously deplete my already small stocks of iron I use for railways etc. and trying to make it fit the dual role of ore in the wild and refined iron plate would be very difficul to do. I was already kind of using the iron ore as an alternative rock material in some areas of my build, so for me it's already got a kind of dual role.
I'm very glad of anyone's two cents worth and your compliments, one helps me think and the other keeps me going! :biggrin.gif:
@ ReaperOfDeath: Haha, I'm sorry for throwing up new possibilities. That's how I felt with Notch's latest update. Too much to take in all at once!! Those possibilities are what I had in mind too when considering the iron plate.
It's a difficult one indeed this slowmud stuff. I'd forgotten about my polluted water! I will ponder over this tonight while doing the week's ironing! :tongue.gif:
I made a forum account right now JUST to say how amazing this pack is and how I look forward to future updates! This pack tops every single one I've tried. I'm generally a lurker when it comes to forums xD
lol You've discouraged me! I was making a Steampunk texture pack but it's nothing like what you've done. (Might be that I was using the stock texture sizes and such though)
Simply amazing pack! Mine isn't anything compared but if you need help with anything, I'd be glad to at least submit something you can edit and make better haha

Much obliged, Shirani. Thank you. :smile.gif:
Here's my latest try at the iron-plate netherstone texture...a little more rusty or brass like. Doesn't blend as well with the halfbrick, which I'd kind of made metallic grey for industrial use.

I was going for a Minecraft environment with Steampunk Attributes but your full conversion just works SO much better lol
Oh, wow! That's a very kind compliment, KyleIchiNi. I don't want to put you off any endeavour though. Sorry about that! :sad.gif: You should carry on. :smile.gif:
I know what you mean about 16x16. It would be a very difficult task to get the sort of detail required for machinery etc., but not impossible. Your task was definately harder than mine!
I want to eventually cover all the graphic elements, for this pack to be complete, but thank you for the very kind offer of help.
Glimmar i'm going to be honest with you. i do enjoy your pack and i find it one of the best looking packs, if not the best 32x32 pack on these forums. and i hope you don't take this the wrong way, but i have felt that your smoothstone (epstially next to the cobble) and the half blocks both felt a little out of place and a little bland bland.
i know you can do better, i mean look at all of your other blocks, furnaces, crafting boxes, and chests are simply amazing. the details make them a highlight for any home or steam punk contraption. the door make me feel like i'm stepping into some some made laboratory, or onto a submarine. your gold, iron, and diamond blocks; i look at them and i'm amazed at the detail, how do you do that? even the cobblestone, which initially i wasn't the biggest fan of, has grown on me. and then i look at your smooth stone, and i wonder how did the cobblestone come from that.
i mean the smoothstone is good on its own right, but it feels a little out of place. and the same could be said for the half steps, i think they could be a little fancier, and could have some more details. especially next to the new Iron plates which look very good, but my eye can't help but get drawn to that half block.
I hope my criticism was more constructive then destructive. and you don't halve to take my words as gods, but i hope you at least consider them with a grain of salt. other wise, i wait eagerly to see this pack completed.
I like the brass looking blocks, and they might look good in the Nether. I love the idea of a metallic underworld.

Make the netherstone look a little oily or sooty? Then the burning could be caused by oil/coal dust
That is a great idea, although it would make anything made out of them look dirty as well. It also might not texture well. I'm not concerned about the dirty look, I like the steampunk mad-engineer working in their home style, but I know others might want something more clean.
Sorry about not realizing that you can place iron ore... I feel dumb. When I get iron it goes in my inventory and then in a furnace or chest, I never thought to even try placing it.
haha, it ok. i play a lot of SMP with the Runecraft mod on the server, and using iron ore as a settable block is key to one of the runes, 'the hidden passage'. when i played single player iron ore went strait to the furnace.
and Glimmar is right about the balancing factor of using iron ore as the iron plates. i mean there really isn't many blocks left to chose from. so Netherstone is really the only option left. that is if you don't want iron plate coat sheep.
and i think the oily/dirty metal plate is a brilliant idea.
Oh and if you're still worried about the sounds of the Nether stones when stepped on, you could make or get someone's help in making an audio pack that could make the steps sound like stepping on metal. I'm sure there are several audio samples that you could probably use for that. Just an idea xD
so Netherstone is really the only option left. that is if you don't want iron plate coat sheep.
Heh, then we'd be forced to live without cloth for airships and balloons and stuff. In all seriousness though, I don't think it will look too bad. Might give the Nether a sort of dead-underground-civilization feel to it.

you know iron plates would look good as an airship skin, though i don't know about a lead balloon, lol.
i'm not against him using the nether for steel plate ether. but i saw there was some speculation on whether or not steel plates as nether would be immersion breaking. i was just throwing out some ideas for alternatives.
which leads me to another idea, glimmer you could make the Iron plates look more like a fuel cell/tank. <- that would make it more believe able. though i fear it would diverge to much from you original design.
really in the end this pack is Glimmar's it is his choice with what direction to take it. regardless of what we/I say. because i will still follow this pack and i will still use it, as long as Glimmar supports it, and possibly even after it.
Ha ha! Me too! :biggrin.gif:

Putting it on hold now, because iron blocks open up a world of choices, turrets, guns, metal armor, and such.
Slow mud, I think shouldn't be used as "Industrial Waste" because the water fits that already.

Lol! Hopefully 'science' can cure it! Especially Steampunk science.
