I was going to do a hell/otherworldy texture pack after finishing my apocalypse pack (although it may be a good idea to put the Apococraft texture on hold so I can have a hell/otherworldly pack in time for halloween...), but there is no way it could compete with... This

...Damnit, I forgot doing petty things like this post hurt life value D:
There's a big difference between faces and skulls, and since my texture was first Notch would be taking inspiration from me. If anything I should be flattered that Notch is taking the game in a similar direction that I am.

I was going to counter that the lovecraftian version of faces are skulls, but the lovecraftian version of faces are faces =/
Spider_eyes.png is a second skin that covers the spider and changes transparency depending on the amount of light it is currently in. Making the spider completely transparent makes it so that only it's second skin is visible, and thus it is only visible in the dark. Spider_eyes.png is not transparent by default, minecraft makes it that way.
I hope that answers your question.
Spiders can be made translucent in the dark and near-invisible in sunlight, to do this:
Step 1 Rename the original spider.png to spider2.png
Step 2 Rename the original blank.png to spider.png
This replaces the spider model with a blank one, so yes they are invisible, but only in the daytime when they are (usually) peaceful. In the dark their additional skin shows brilliantly.
When using the SoundPack it is recommended that you also do:
Step 3 Rename spider_eyes.png to spider_eyes2.png
Step 4 Rename spider2.png to spider_eyes.png
This just replaces the regular spider_eyes.png texture with the spider.png texture, resulting in white, ghostly spiders.

They still attack you in lit caverns, however, leading to some decent scares when the chameleon spider attacks

Such is the nature of suffering... thank you for the compliment.
You should also re-texture the water.
I think it should look green and swampy.
Also what about the mossy coblestone you find in dungeons?
That will only work in a higher resolution texture pack, and then it won't animate anyway, so I think I'll wait until Notch makes it more modifiable.
I did make a texture for it, but in retrospect it wasn't very good and I plan to redo it.
Oh cool! It looks like an Autumn biome.
It looks like a pumpkin patch
