I was curious, do you plan on having a way if it's possible to zoom in/out for more fine control of the process for specific areas?
Also, I found an interesting bug (At least I think they are bugs). when you export, you can select multi choices for the border. Also if you type in a place to save the instead of using the [...] button. The Export button is greyed out.
@elpres, @Sinister Brain: it's as if you guys are reading my mind... :-)
I had just noticed and fixed the bug where you can select multiple borders. And I have just implemented an option to mark the entire map as "unpopulated" so Minecraft will generate stuff for you.
Download the new version here, or from the top post.
When you select the "mark as unpopulated" option (on the export dialog), the entire map will be marked as unpopulated, causing Minecraft to generate the following things whenever each chunk is first loaded:
[*:1djvdcve]Water and lava pools
[*:1djvdcve]Pockets of dirt and gravel
[*:1djvdcve]Pockets of resources (coal, ores, diamond, etc.)
[*:1djvdcve]Trees
[*:1djvdcve]Flowers and cactuses
[*:1djvdcve]Snow
It will not generate caverns! It does generate small underground water pools, which are big enough for mobs to spawn. Because the default terrein height of the tool is quite low (16), Minecraft will tend to generate many surface lava pools, which will tend to set fire to the forests. :-)
Note that Minecraft will apply its own biomes to the landscape, irrespective of how you designed it. You have no control over where it will generate trees, snow, etc...
Unfortunately Minecraft doesn't support marking just particular layers as unpopulated, it's the entire chunk or nothing. In the future I may add support for indicating for each individual chunk whether you want it unpopulated or not (but my long term aim is that it won't be necessary any more because the tool generates a complete world).
I was curious, do you plan on having a way if it's possible to zoom in/out for more fine control of the process for specific areas?
Yes. :-)

Are you sure? It's meant to become active whenever you have typed a complete path to an existing directory. The directory has to exist already, it won't be created for you. I've just tested that it works on my system, but I'm on Linux, so perhaps it's a Windows quirk.

Just grabbed your new version and it worked fine. Yep, I was going to a already made directory C:\Users\Username\Desktop I hope my desktop is there! :smile.gif:
Awesome new features btw. What a fantastic tool you made here man.
Please keep developing, this looks tremendously promising. If you get resource distribution down, I can't tell you how useful I would find this. I'm in the process of making a 4,000 x 4,000 map for my SMP server, and using tools like MCEdit and Biome Terrain Mod works to composite the things I need, but this looks like it'd be so much easier... If I could just paint a huge desert onto the map, without having to generate a good one with the Biome Terrain Mod, then piece it together with MCEdit? Well, you'd be saving me days of work. Only thing is, right now I can't handle manual resource distribution on a 4k x 4k map :tongue.gif:
so, can you control the size or shape of chunks? Will the current version have water and lava spawn on the surface as it is marked as unpopulated? If so, will this change the layout and features of the landscape that we create?
If you start building at level 16 can we already just build our own caverns and water and lava caves. all that would be needed then is the ability to add ore blocks. Though I personally would prefer randomised ore placement.
If you can control chunk size and shape can we then have the chunks as the top layers we create and unpopulated beneath it?
I think you have made an awesome tool and I hope that you keep developing and making this better. I can imagine some of the masterpiece landscapes and worlds that people will develop.
No, a chunk is a basic Minecraft unit I have no control over. It's sixteen by sixteen blocks wide and 128 blocks high (all the way from the bottom to the top of the map).

Yes. I believe I said so in my post about this new version. ;-)
Minecraft spawns lava pools below a certain height, but because by default the surface is very low down in this tool, many of the lava pools end up on the surface.

Build them in-game, you mean? By digging, or using some other tool? That's true of course, although it would still be a lot of work.
I recommend that you experiment a bit with the tool. Just try out different settings (populated, unpopulated), different heights, etc., see what it looks like in Minecraft. That's the best way to find out exactly what the influence of the different settings is.
To be honest I've been trying to avoid it. I have an addictive personallity which means that hours, days and weeks could be spent, and possibly, would be spent in design etc. Unfortunately, due to my lack of artistic ability it would still look bad.
I just hopped on board with the idea. I am pretty good with ideas.
sorry, to clarify what I meant with the level 16 question. I thought you said that your tool starts building at level 16. I thought then we could use your tool to create the caves and what not by building layer upon layer.

Ah. No, I meant that the default surface level in the tool is 16 (you can change it when you create a new world), which is a lot lower than the average surface level in Minecraft (64). The reason is that I wanted to be able to create imposing mountain ranges, so I needed more room between the surface and the top of the map.
I just uploaded a new version of the tool, with the following changes:
[*:1hdu1pnk]Buttons prettified. They now use icons instead of texts, have been moved to a side panel, and behave slightly more consistently. I'm not very happy with the icons; if a good pixel artist would like to create some icons for this tool that would be fantastic!
[*:1hdu1pnk]Bug fixed in the frost layer, the snow and ice is now exported to the correct location. Also, no snow is exported on top of lava. Not only does that make no sense, but it also appears to crash the client if you try to break the snow.
[*:1hdu1pnk]The flatten, smooth and raise/lower tools no longer reset the terrain type. If you want to change the terrain type to the default for the altitude, pick any terrain type tool and right-click instead of left-clicking.
Download it here or from the top post, and let me know what you think!
Oh, and btw, runs on linux like a charm :biggrin.gif: No problems unless I make extremely large mountains and my minecraft will tend to crash due to loading or something, but after I load it again It's fine. Not seeming to get any errors or anything, everything's running smoothly. It would be extremely useful if I were to want my own kind of place, or I need a generally flat landscape, but still natural at the same time (slight bumps here in there, kinda desertish) or anything like that. I know that this would probably be impossible, but if there was something that I REALLY wanted added to this, would be for somehow minecraft is able to pickup on the type of landscape etc, and sort of use the landscape we created as a 'seed' and make it able to have an infinite world, like minecraft usually has, except with the same sort of landscape we drew our selves. Other then that, epic tool, really love it :biggrin.gif: also a forest and pumpkin generator brush sort of thing would be cool too see, and also a little pop up when your mouse goes over the icons to see what they did, at first I was just clicking random ones and placing everywhere, and the block icons are a bit small, at first I thought the mossy cobblestone was just normal cobblestone! or maybe I'm just blind :tongue.gif:
EDIT: Nevermind, I just realised that pop ups do come up, you just need to keep your cursor on for 10 seconds or so, or is it meant to come up immediately? Cause maybe mines just glitching due to linux or something :tongue.gif:
EDIT2: I just noticed there seems to be a red pixel or something I can't get rid of on it, like a dead pixel, but its just sitting there and, when I move the window, it moves with it, no problem, just a little annoying.
Yeah. Also you should have a option to make the brush be solid not spraying.
You people really are reading my mind! :-)
I just made a new version, which allows you to select the falloff (how strong the effect is as you get further away from the centre) and shape of the brush. If you want a solid brush, set the falloff to "constant". The paint tools have separate brush settings from the terrain shape tools.

Yeah, that would be really hard to do. Not impossible, but it would require a server plugin, and it's really outside the scope for this tool. But who knows, some time in the future...
In the mean time you can add a border when you export the map, to prevent people from being able to see or reach ungenerated land.

I don't think so. I'm on Linux too, and the tooltips pop up after a second or so. You have to keep your mouse still though, perhaps it is glitching or trembling, like they are sometimes prone to do?
Yeah, that would be really handy, I admit. Especially when you accidentally flood the entire terrain. ;-)
But it's hard to implement. Basically it amounts to having to keep multiple copies around of the entire map, which would be slow and use up huge amounts of memory. I'm not sure yet if and how I'm going to do it. It can be a pain in the ass if you make a mistake, but you can fix most problems already relatively easily with the tools that are there.

One little thing. the input field for the water lava level in the export is to short. It clips the second number.
You can already change the brush size, by scrolling your mouse wheel, or pressing - or + on your keyboard.
