A new chunk format and thus a new map format was a requirement before the height limit could be raised.
I'm pretty sure double map height was a pretty big benefit.
Well, I was speaking based on my opinion. I'd rather keep my server online and be able to meet the needs of my players than have double map height. But, as I said, it's just my opinion.

These are the same complaints that happen after every game update, you can't just blame the map format which has also changed several times over the years, but there is hope. You are not forced to update your game and your server people are not forced to update their games either so you are free to remain using the version that you are comfortable with.
Keep in mind that it is an unstable build, meaning that there will be bugs and errors. Rather than just complain that you can't do this or that, it would be better if you could post error reports so that there is some hint as to what's wrong.
Just in case future posters forget where the download button is....because they forgot where it was...
It's right there, next to the red circle.Dear creators, testers, programmers and laborers of MCEdit, I wanted to thank you all for your hardwork.
If it wasn't for all of you making sure this program was working and running, and existing at all, I would be deleting my Hardcore file right now due to a Chunk Error suffocating me.
Thank you for making my experience in this game way more enjoyable, and saving something meaningful to me.
Using 0.1.1 win32, and I've gotten two major bugs.
First bug: I made a new map via MCEdit, flat 64 blocks high. After loading it up in-game, I then reopened it in MCEdit and deleted a bunch of extra chunks that had been made by the game, and filled them up with the MCEdit chunk creation. I saved, and MCEdit went through its save process alright. I could exit and load it. I did some work on that, saved, and then loaded in Minecraft. All my work in the extra chunks (ones not originally made during map creation) was deleted. I think this bug is because the MCEdit is not properly deleting chunks, i.e. the delete chunks button does not work. I did this again, same bug. After the second time, I used an air-fill to clear out chunks, then copied and pasted large flat sections, and it saved properly. As I said, I think the bug is that MCEdit is not properly deleting or replacing the chunks, so when Minecraft loads up it thinks it needs to re-populate those chunks. When using air fills to delete, this is not a problem.
Second bug is bigger for me at least. Its a lighting bug, essentially I'm making large caves underground (max height of the cave<60 blocks high, so this shouldn't be a problem with the new height max). Sunlight is getting through the stone ceiling, which can be seen by odd lighting patterns both post-saving in MCEdit (which makes me think this is an MCEdit bug), and in-game. I know its sunlight getting through because:
1. When I change the time of day with TooManyItems the amount of light on those blocks changes.
2. Standing on those blocks eliminates bedrock fog.
EDIT: Possibly of note, the second bug is only happening for me in the areas which were not originally made in map creation, as mentioned in the first bug. Also of note, when I copy/paste the caves with lighting bugs, the lighting bugs persist no matter where I move them.
Codewarrior, TKTech, you guys are a Godsend. I don't know how I could do anything without MCEdit (well, I could still do anything, but your program adds a level of awesome Mojang has yet to implement).
after about 1 week of using Mcedit, oppening any world that i have made, no chunks will appear at all.
It's a compleaty emptyness where i can float around and only see where my character is and thats it.
Can someone show me where the noise option is in the latest version? I can't seem to find it.
Use the Chance function, its normally at 100, but if you put it at, say, 95 then there should be a 95% chance a block gets placed instead of 100. That way, you can decide how much noise you want.
Does MCEdit work with the new Anvil world formats in 1.2? I made a giant statue of me and I wanted to move it to my adventure map. I would like a stable version but unstable is fine, as long as it doesn't crash.

I asked this earlier in the thread. but I have a suggestion/request for a future feature.
I would like to be able to edit a biome type. for example the more recent build of minecraft made it snow in the pine forests. This wasn't the case when I started my build so now everything I worked on is covered in snow. I would like to be able to change this area into a plains, or a regualar forest. almost anything buy the pine forest it is now. Any idea if this could be added?
Thank you for reading, and thank you for you work.
The old stable releases don't work with 1.2. Read the thread. You need the latest test build from github to edit 1.2 maps.

Not for me though. I'm getting the following error:

Maybe I just installed it wrong.
It's saying it can't find some file or directory? Hm No clue beyond that.
Try redownloading it - link in first post, and then "Downloads" in the right side of that page
when will it be updated for minecraft 1.2.3 because the anvil messes mcedit up you can only see the spawn and the player all the other chucks (which do not render) is void
Could you at least read THIS page. The LAST page. The page you JUST POSTED ON.
Did that three times now. I guess I'm just installing it wrong, just extracting and running it like with the "old" MCEdit doesn't work anymore I assume?
Extracting the zip and running main.exe, is what did it for me
When extracted, you should have a folder named "MCEdit-0.1.1.win32", and 2 files, main.exe and python27.dll
That's the main.exe you should use (Not the one inside the folder) Hope that made any sense
Anyone here have any bloody advice on installation for a Mac user, I can't get the damn thing to work. i down the mac zip, extract, try to run the app, and nothing

Would you mind sending me the world folder that's failing on you? You can upload it publicly if you want or email it/a link to me at [email protected]. Side point, keep in mind even with 16GB of system RAM most applications can only allocate 4GB of that, so saying "has 14.3GB free" (in which case it could have potentially allocated more) is different from from saying your system has 16GB total, of which all of it might be being used
Here it is, I'll PM you as well. It seems to load OK in normal view, but top down view will crash if you scroll around the map and fill in the entire area. It doesn't matter which direction you scroll, it will crash as it loads the last pieces. Again, I only opened the map, never made any changes or saves. http://www.mediafire.com/?8bfs3mf05nngjmf

Um i dont know if there is a download somwere in the thread to use mcedit for minecraft 1.2, anyone know if it does?
Did you perhaps check the first post's link to Github, and then click "Downloads" on the righthand side of the screen there?
That one works with Minecraft 1.2's Anvil map format (And also pre-Anvil maps)
