Uhmm no they are not, Mermaids are more human than fish and Sirens are more fish than human.
(Told you gojiman, that i know a lot of mythical beasts, every single detail :o)
Well if you want to be that picky, true Sirens were originally actually closer to Harpies in their make-up, with the heads of beautiful women instead of heads and torsos, and smelling much better. They lived on an island near Greece and lured men to their deaths with their beautiful voices. This detail is what commonly causes them to be associated with old world mermaids, as they would also lure sailors with their voices. Because of this association, a different kind of Siren came into being which is essentially synonymous with merpeople. The only real difference between mermaids and sirens is their level of toleration for humans. In modern mythological interpretations, it is widely accepted that mermaids are generally not hostile or predatory towards humans, while Sirens are predators of humans and use their beauty and hypnotic voices to attract men before eating them. These creatures are not to be confused with Nereids, Naiads, or Oceanids, which are all nymphs and not part fish at all.
You cannot hope to defeat Bookwyrm in a mythical-creature-off, he is simply the best there is. (If you ever need help or ideas, Goji, you have my services. I've always wanted a good, varied mythical creature mod to help with. Have you considered doing any Asian/Native American/Aboriginal /Celtic creatures? Or are you just focusing on Old English folklore?)
The devs on the Myths and monsters mod don't seem to be doing a whole lot with their mod, so I figured I'd drop my suggestions from there here, since they're both myth focused mods.
Here's my mobs. Each one comes with a unique feature, a special item, and the mythology associated with the creature.
AKHLUT:
An Inuit creature that looks like an Orca with legs. Part Wolf, part Orca Whale. Modeling them would be relatively easy to do nicely. This would spawn exclusively in winter biomes near or in water. It would act much like a wolf, in that if you provoke it, they will attack you. They attack other hostile mobs. Maybe you could tame them like wolves also? Drops Akhlut Blubber. Can be used to create something burnable, since whale fat was used for lamps? Perhaps a Lantern of Protection that damages or scares away hostile mobs, since Akhluts are spirits of protection?
WENDIGO:
A spirit of famine and cannibalism from Algonquin folklore. They could be bipedal or go on all fours in the model. They look like zombified humans cobbled together with the bones of forest creatures. Spawns in Taiga and winter biomes. They are very quick, and they hunt zombies. (cuz flesh eaters) When they hit you, the hunger potion effect is placed on the player. Drops Wendigo Ribs or a Wendigo Skull that can then be used to create an armor piece that converts health of mobs you hit into filling up your hunger.
CAPRICORN:
Comes from Greek Mythology. A capricorn is a creature with the front half of a goat and the back half of a fish. Modeling possibilities include having a sheep with small, curly horns in place of an entirely new goat model. These would be passive mobs that can be found only in ocean biomes (they don't spawn naturally in lakes or rivers like squids. They would drop Capricorn Mutton and Capricorn Horn which can be crafted (using some other ocean item, like Sea Serpent Scales) into a Triton Shofar. A Shofar is a long musical instrument made from a goat's horn. When blown, it uses a point of durability and allows the player to swim at much greater speeds for a short period of time. As long as you have it in your hand, you also cannot drown, but it also takes damage over time for this.
NUCKELAVEE:
A creature from Scottish Folklore. Nuckelavees are centaur-like creatures that look like a man riding a horse, but the man is attached at the waist. It has no skin, but instead all of it's muscles are exposed. Possible modeling opportunities to reuse the original horse model. The Nuckelavee is a creature of plague and famine, so it seeks out and destroys farms of wheat and potatoes. When it attacks you, it inflicts a number of nasty potion effects on you, and knocks you back. These will only spawn around Nether Portals, both in the Nether and Overworld. When killed, it drops 20-30 rotten flesh, and in addition, you will occasionally get a Devil Pike, a long spearlike weapon wielded by the mob itself. When striking a mob, it applies a whole bunch of similar nasty effects. However, when it is in your inventory, it slowly destroys all crop-based food items (except for potatoes, which it replaces with poison potatoes)
