Beta version 0.9.0 is ready! Go ahead and download it!
Changelog:
- Renamed config options. Config file will need to be deleted after this release.
- Lots of compatibility
- Now requires Forge 1230
- Recipes now use ore dictionary when possible
- Campfire! And a use for those marshmallows!
- Rock hammer allows you to get gravel by smashing cobblestone. That's not its only use, though.
- Bugfix: Nether Brick Oven now can actually accept (and save) fluid stored in its tank through BC pipes.
- Bugfix (sorta): Kilns lose track of cooking progress (This one fixed itself).
This will be the last version for 1.7.10. All future versions of BetterBeginnings, starting with beta v0.9.1, will be for 1.8.x and later. Updating will be my sole priority for 0.9.1, so no new features will be added between the two.
Is it NEI compatible now?(and by that, I'm asking if it won't crash when we try to see the recipe of a item/block that needs catalyst items)
Oh, and apparently, pumpkins cannot be broken by hand. Ouch.
Say, what can the campfire do? I mean, I get that it can marshmallows, that it needs to be lit to work, and it has a 'cooldown' where you can start it up without lighting it, but the rest is sorta hard to understand.
For example, this "cook food and roast marshmallows when you don't have a home yet. It is much cheaper than a kiln, and can do the work of a brick oven when supplied with a pan" Does it mean it can cook marshmallows, and can cook food when it has a pan, or does it mean it can cook meat, but needs a pan to bake bread and cake and all that? It seems to imply that you can cook food(meat), and can also do things like golden foods, bread, stew(this does need a oven, right? never checked) if provided with a pan, but the pan's description says "A pan is a necessary tool for cooking stuff in the campfire", which sounds very much like it's saying that we can't cook any food items in the campfire without a pan.
Also, I wonder about how useful the campfire can be. It needs cobblestone to craft, which means you need a pickaxe. And by then, you can very easily gather the materials to make a kiln, oven, and smelter. Sure, it has a very cheap price of two cobblestone and two logs, but it doesn't take much more effort to make a kiln, or oven, or smelter, and the fact that it needs a pan, an item that takes slightly more than two ingots of iron and breaks, plus fuel to do what a oven can do for a cheaper price, makes it seem very not worth it.
The only advantage it has is that it needs less time to make then a oven, which requires you to bake 23 bricks before crafting it, but once you have a crafting bench, you can easily make a bed, and even without it, you can easily make a simple shelter with dirt to wait for it to finish, and since you don't lose hunger when staying still, making a oven is overall a much better, and totally possible way to stat cooking rather then a campfire, with the only problems that can occur being
1. You don't have enough clay, which is unlikely as you only need to find 6 clay blocks, and cay is rather plentiful.
2. You don't have enough fuel, which is possible, but unlikely, and easily remedied as coal is very plentiful and you can always smelt wooden objects or make charcoal.
3. It takes too much time, which is only a problem if 1) You're starving, 2) It's getting dark or 3) You're bored. And for 1), you don't lose hunger if you don't move, for 2) Simply getting in a safe place and waiting till dawn or sleeping in a bed will work fine, and for 3), you can read a book, or I suppose, make the campfire.
So unless you're bored with waiting, I really see no need for campfires, other then decoration, roasting marshmallows, or possibly, a early-game light source(if it emits light)
I never ran into that NEI crash. I've tested with NEI by right-clicking on an item in NEI that requires advanced crafting, and it simply does not display the recipe, no crash. I could not get NEI support working, so that will have to wait until after NEI and CCC update to 1.8, now that I've started working on the update.
That thing about the pumpkins was strange... I thought I fixed that, but it seems to have undone itself.
I see your point about campfires. I have to say, in retrospect they seem kind of pointless now, considering they can't quite do the work of a kiln (can only cook food), and it doesn't emit light. I will put this down as a todo for after v0.9.1 (update to 1.8). I have to say, 1.8 changed a whole lot of wierd things, and apparently I now have to make three JSON files for every single block in my mod, so that will be a pain.
As for the confusing info in the description, that will be fixed ASAP.
Dude...this is...AMAZING ! this is like the EXACT mod I have made in my head over and over, even suggested some similar things in a suggestion thread on FTB forums actually. Great work ! Now for the task of balancing it against my ridiculously large ssp PACK :/
I think when we initially talked about the campfire, the idea was that it would be a 2x2 recipe using grass and sticks, which would make it available pre-kiln. In that situation, it would be at least partly useful.
I'm not sure if this is still the case because the spotlight was for a previous version, but (in my opinion) the dealing-damage-when-broken aspect to wood doesn't fit in and is a bit unrealistic (although I suppose that's okay because this is a video game). I feel like it would be better off if it was unbreakable (as in bedrock) until you get the right tools to break it with. This is just my opinion, though, and it's still an amazing mod whether or not this is implemented.
I like the damage-dealing myself, but I do agree that it might be a lot more nice if we didn't have to break the block to get the effects, and instead, have the effects damage us when we keep on trying to break the block even when we can't.
That way, if we happen to encounter blocks that we're not sure what to break with, we won't have to break it and risk negative effects to find out what to break it with. Instead, we can just try to break it, and if it won't break, we can quickly stop, avoiding the 'breaking with wrong tool' damage as long as we remain vigilant.
Also, would be cool if, instead of just getting damaged when breaking a block, a tool gets damaged for say, every second it tries to break a block, so not only would better tools last much longer due to the virtue of breaking blocks faster, and therefor using less durability to break said block, blocks that are harder to break, such as obsidian, would take much more durability to break than say, stone.
For some odd reason, I cannot get the campfire to light. I'm not sure if its the 150 mods i have or if there's some sort of trick to it. I am in creative (checking to see how the mod works with the other ones i have) but I don't know if that would cause any problems.
Thanks for taking the time to look at my textures. I'd just like to say that those textures were the ones that I use in my personal texture pack, and that I am always willing to change any textures you don't find suitable. As well as not messing with textures that you don't want changed.
It appears that when I try to craft an iron helmet (I don't know if the same thing happens with the other kinds of helmets) the game crashes. Please fix this, this is my favorite mod. I am using your most recent version.
UPDATE: I tried to craft helmets and armor of the other materials, and no crash. I still crash when crafting an iron helmet.
I have an issue with this mod. It appears that GregTech ores are not breakable with any tool. Also, GregTech tools cannot break anything, and Atomic Disassemblers are unusable. I have tried editing the configs, but to no avail. Please explain in more detail how the configs work or add a fix. Thank you for your time.
GregTech has a reputation for being incompatible with just about everything (since MC 1.5.2). The tools and ores put in by GT are coded differently than most ores and tools, and probably have special cases hard-coded in (a major no-no when coding). My tools are all made the same way as vanilla tools, so any bug here is on GT (nothing I can code to fix this). I don't expect BetterBeginnings to be compatible with GT until Greg decides to play nice with other mods.
The config are pretty self-explanatory; is there any specific parts you're confused about? I can make things more clear in the next version.
