On the off-chance this mod is rebooted or something else decides to make a SAO mod, I've been working on a few things that are vaguely based around the universe - the main thing being a skill system. I even based my GUI roughly around the SAO one (Skill Icons are placeholders):
It's only loosely based off SAO (eg 7 skills instead of 12) but it's an open source API. Anyone with even the most basic modding experience can very easily make new skills using it - the only java limitations are what you make your skill do
It's actually built to tie-in with my gun mod Advanced Armoury - so if anything I'm closer to making a GGO-style setup. Only a small jump from there though, if someone wants to help me rebuild the Cardinal system to get AI mobs/items generated randomly then we'll be set.

If you want to use my SAO-style skills API, I can easily port it to 1.8.9 for use (It's 1.7.10 currently but the code base should be very similar). I've actually changed it since the last screenshots so it has 12 skill slots now; 4 of which get shared with the armour slots (So you can equip 8 skills 4 armour, or 12 skills no armour, or anywhere in between - More like SAO's equipment slots)
I believe so, there was work on a re-release but I'm not sure on how far progress is. I've been rewriting and modifying RPGCore (screenshots above) and designing a matching UI for them - but beyond that idk how much they have.
I believe we are looking for developers, builders (If (And hopefully when) we get a stable version up, builders will be building the structures that will be set to auto-gen when the world is loaded, kinda like how villages are), and texturers.

The API is really simple to use. It just provides a way of unifying skills, it handles an XP system which also contributes to a global level (Level up any skill, your Global slowly grows too). There's a (slightly outdated) example of skill creation here:
