Well, I got plenty done today, designed and coded the entire Trinket mechanic. In short, you can have one trinket on you that would do a special ability on special occasions, these are attuneable, so you can customize them to do special things. Only one trinket exists as of now, and it was mostly added for testing, but it works fine, and it'll most likely make it there. It's called the "Flaming Ragdoll", it burns mobs that attack you, however, the one in this image is attuned with the "Infernal" attunement, which makes it take more durability damage but burn aggravated mobs nearby, rather than the ones that attack you. Also, obvious placeholder sprite is obvious, but it should get you a good idea of what's going on. (Bottom left corner).
XD Because my modding knowledge is not really big, im only doing some textures and most of the models right now (and the basic code of the mobs too!)
Im just managing the project, not a lot of work. Im learning a lot with this project, and when it will be done, I will make a mod myself with a bit of help from Vazkii and Calebmanley. (I wont give more info about the mod I am thinking of, not even the name!)
Starting to step into the new health system that will be added with the mod. In this picture you can see the Soul Heart mechanic (inspired by The Binding of Isaac ^^), you can find these by having a good performance in rifts (dealing critical hits, fast killstreaks, no damage, etc...), next to my health bar you can see I have some soul hearts, each soul heart represents one life point, so 20 soul hearts would be needed to have a second health bar per say. When you take damage, the soul hearts absorb all the damage, but in doing so they disappear, so they are temporary health one would say, you can have up to 250 of them, or 10 and a half extra life bars.
Looking good Vazkii, that would make a nice little mod on its own, but cant wait to see what else you going to be adding.
By the looks of what your banging out, this will be one of my standard mods, will make a great combination with Mine and Blade
Hey Vaz! I just stumbled upon this thread and I like what I'm seeing so far. I had no idea this was in the works.
Attunement system seems interesting, looks like we can really fiddle and play around with making various customized items, likewise for the nifty trinket thingies!
I'm mostly interested in the mobs and the mob AI in general, so looking forward to whenever you release tidbits/demos about that. Otherwise, not much feedback to offer except that everything you've shown looks unique and fun, something new to Minecraft. I like it so far.
The rift things look a bit too small/not epic enough, they should look more like giant holes into other dimensions, like in Rift(the game).
Perhaps the rift spawns blocks around it to make it look like a window into some of the terrain?Like how the life rift has tentacles and plants hanging out and such.

Yo dawg I heard you like playing Portal so now you can play Portal while playing Minecraft while going to Hell.
That's good, any words on the life system either, that's my latest toy =D
Oh yeah, I like the soul heart concept, as long as they're difficult to obtain. You seem to have that mindset given the challenges you indicated need to be accomplished to obtain them. I like that aspect of getting them, that you need to deal with mobs in a certain way- gives more challenge to combat. Only thing I would suggest is to provide players a config option. I'd personally want to cap the number of soul hearts I could "wear" at once to probably no more than 5, and if I could store my surplus for future use, that'd be nice. Having 250 extra hearts seems a bit... much!
Creatively engaging and challenging combat is something I'm still looking around for in Minecraft; your system just might satisfy that desire. Of course, you still need to make mobs that have great AI! I recall you mentioned support and healing mobs, so that also is something I'm hopeful about.
There's only so many creepers, spiders, and skeles I can jump-crit to oblivion before it becomes a chore.
Mmm, I see. If it's basically essential for dealing with the Rift hordes, that's different. I just know it'd sure make vanilla Minecraft all the more painfully easy.
Perhaps you could have a setting where the Soul Hearts only work in the Rifts? That way we could use them there, but still have only 10 hearts in the overworld?
On that note, one thing I wasn't clear about: when we get to these shadow crystals/rifts, are we entering a dimension, so to speak, or are all these mobs coming into the overworld?
The new dimension thing has already been considered, but we decided to forget it because it would require too much programming and scriptinng if we want it to be unique.
Its still an idea that I really love, and it could really bring a new aspect to the game.

Gotcha, the opening paragraph of the OP indicates dimensions but the info I've been seeing doesn't, so just wanted to confirm, thanks.
Looking good, cant wait to see some test versions to have a play around with
New sprite looks gd Vazkii
The sprite has been made by calebmanley
