Ah yes, Magic.
The thing we all want. The thing we try to imitate.
It's now upon us.
In Minecraft!
Yes minecraft has magic. The 2 M's!
The Information:
Crafting Recipes
Crucible
Energy Crystal
Totem of Death
Novice Deck
Portalbrick
Portal Stone
Portal Door (Didn't have a picture of recipe so)
= Portalbrick
= Portal Stone
= Redstone Torch
Items and Blocks
Crucible
If you throw blocks or items into it, they are converted into the liquid form of whatever form of magic they are studying. This is decided by placing the crystal of that form and a crucible in a crafting table (shapeless).
Energy Crystal
This item, when charged, provides the mage with however much power is in it. Different levels of the energy crystals are craftable, each storing a higher level of power. Totems
Each form of magic has a totem. This is either a block or an item. The totem, when built fully, creates an obelisk, boosting power of that form of magic within the range of it. They are also upgradable. Decks
Decks are crucial bit of magic. A deck stores spell cards, which are used in combat. Each level of decks hold more spell cards. Portalbrick
Portalbrick is a material that you make a portal out of. The portal is then activated when built in the world gate. The world gate is the highest stable point in the world (Stable meaning don't build up your own structure). Portal Doors
Portal doors are the interactive part of a portal. The door accepts keys that unlock a new world. In the Portal Door, you can select a world in the GUI menu, and it will generate the dimension and transport you to it's world gate. However, this portal door is different from your world gate. It will show all your unlocked worlds, but you cannot insert keys into it. World Gates
A world gate is a man-made structure that allows you to travel to the dimensions of the mod. It is constructed like so:
= Portal Door
= Portalbrick
= Wood Blocks (Oak Wood Only)
Once built, you activate the door with a Portal Stone and it will open and set it's coords. Then go craft yourself a key to the next world and it will unlock.
Magic Itself
Magic is the main focus of the mod.
When you spawn in the world, you play normally for the first 5 days. On the fifth day, faith determines your true magic ability. These can be: Death
Death, or Necromancy, is a form of magic mainly consisting of reviving the dead. It is also considered (By me) stealing power for yourself. Life
Life is the opposite of death. It is usually based on healing, and has low power attacks. However, they have large amounts of health. Storm
Storm is the power of the clouds. Harnessing it's ability, gives you the largest amount power, but the lowest health increase. Mythology
Basing your conjuring on mythology allows you to summon great things to fight for you, that primarily don't exist. These could include Minotaurs, or Cyclopses. Thaumaturgy
Thaumaturgy, or Ice powered Magic, is based on the power of freezing your enemies, or trapping them in ice. Thaumaturgists have large defensive wards, but low power attacks, and large amounts of health. Pyromancy
Pyromancers, or Fire Mages, can burn people alive or encase them in lava for their toasty doom. Pyromancers have strong attacks, and medium health increase. Balance
Balance Wizards, or Sorcerers, can harness power almost as great as Merlin. With the power of the average of all the posibilities of magic, they are almost the most powerful wizards.
Quote ThaumCraft forum page:
"Thaumaturgy... which giveth certain order to make strange works, of the sense to be perceived and of men greatly to be wondered at."
First word: Thaumaturgy
Look in the magic section, only ONE of the points are "Thaumaturgy" which is ice magic.
The mod might look like thaumcraft.
That's childish. Just because someone likes another mod and decide to advertise it because they think that mod deserves it, it's their choice. If you think it's insulting keep it to yourself, for very obvious reasons.
Okay, so I really like this! I just wish that all of the magic mod makers could collaborate and make an epic magic launc-OMYGAWD!
You or I should start a "conference conversation" via curse to work on a combined modpack of sorts for all of the different magics!
...But I digress.
I really enjoy what you are doing here. The deck system seems innovative for Minecraft Magic, so continue onwards, and let us hope for the best.
I also really like the totems idea. The crystals confused me for a moment, but then I read a bit closer and got it.
Those were a few of the pros. Now for the cons and some suggestions/constructive criticism.
The crucible. The reason some folk thought this was another Thaumcraft was because of that name, and the general purpose.
I would recommend changing that name. Maybe even change the way it gets the energy, like making it more direct and focused, like using an Athame. An Athame is a Wiccan tool, a knife. But instead of using it for the original purpose, instead make it so that you have to stab it into a block to harvest the energy. Then that energy can be syphoned into a card or cards. May I propose a crafting recipe?
o = nothing
C = Cobblestone
S = Stick
Y - Energy Crystal of a corresponding magic school
o C o
o S o
o Y o
Okay, so the next thing would have to do with the post in general.
For the most part, it is great, if sparse for the moment.
There are a few confusing things, however.
For one: the Death Totem? I would recommend just typing Totem and explaining what it does and what general varieties there are in its description.
Call Ice magic Ice, or Cold. Thaumaturgy has little to do with Ice. Ice is perfectly ordered and structured. It can be broken down into infinite fractals, and the molecules are nearly perfectly aligned.
And finally, call the novice deck just a deck. I mean, yeah, that might work for a starting deck, but it won't work in this post, because they will think that it is only for getting started, and that after they are done with the novice deck, they can pull a manacraft and shoot stuff at will without requiring cards.
In all this mod is most certainly going to turn out great. For now, start with the items and getting them textured, then work on the effects and the classes. And please take my suggestions and criticisms into account. It will benefit you to think on all suggestions.
Please say that you have started making this, it is so AMAZING...
I personally think I'll be a Pyromancer or a Mix... Also, I would say that I'll help with modelling, but im the most unreliable if you want a timely thing, because im a procrastinator at heart...
Oh, also, what algorithm do you use to interpret the power of the player? Is it random, or does it consist of what the player does in the five days... (For example: Playing with flint and steal, Pyromancy.)

I've actually changed the method, it is going to be one of those full conversion not-compatible-with-anything mods which then you choose characters like in evil minecraft.

I'll look into it. I'm keeping the crucible but it will most likely have a gui instead of chucking items into it. Decks are equipped by level, so the novice deck is meant for level 0-1 wizards who are just getting started. The same goes for spells, you need to be a certain level to unlock the recipe for each higher level spell. Thaumaturgy is just a name.
Hey, Please just release the work you have done now, instead of making a two-year-conversion-mod! You can wor on that AFTER you have made us feel good by playing this!

It won't take two years to do. Besides, if it's going to be an awesome conversion mod then what's the point of releasing what I have now?
Want to finish up on some other mods before continuing this one. If you've seen Ultimate Apocalypse, it's far more popular than this.
I'd like to finish that one first.
Alright status update time
-Still not working on it much
-It's gonna be full conversion. Don't ask for any compatibilities.
-I need a texture artist to help me. PM me.
-Gonna be based nearly entirely on dimensions, it'll result like aether.
-Phasing out the theme of crafting everything.
-Now you need to summon it all by gathering ingredients and other stuff from dungeons.
