She didn't know her name beforehand. In the chapter "A Name of Power", The chapter after Eragon visits Brom and learns several names from him, Eragon recites the list of names and she chooses Saphira. I will read from the book:
Eragon, page 56-57:
"You need a name. I heard some interesting ones today; perhaps you'll like one" He mentally ran through the list Brom had given him until he found two names that struck him as heroic, noble, and pleasing to the ear. "What do you think of Vanilor or his successor, Eridor? Both were great dragons." No, said the dragon. It sounded amused with his efforts. Eragon.
"That's my name; you can't have it," he said, rubbing his chin. "Well if you don't like those, there are others." He continued through the list, but the dragon rejected every one he proposed. It seemed to be laughing at something Eragon did not understand, but he ignored it and kept suggesting names. "There was Ingothold, he slew the..." A revelation stopped him. "That's the problem! I've been choosing male names. You are a she!" Yes. The dragon folded her wings smugly.
Now that he knew what to look for, he came up with half a dozen names. He toyed with Miremel, but that d id not fit-after all, it was the name of a brown dragon. Opheila and Lenora were also discarded. He was ab out to give up w hen he remembered the last name Brom had muttered. Eragon liked it, but would the dragon?
He asked. "Are you Saphira?" She looked at him with Intelligent eyes. Deep in his mind he felt her satisfaction. Yes. Something clicked in his head and her voice echoed, as if from a great distance. He grinned in response. Saphira started humming.
Christopher Paolini also answered a question that a fan asked him about the dragon's names and he said that dragons would normally choose their own names once they were old enough to understand the concept and that it wasn't unheard of for a dragon to change its name later on.
That chapter was what gave me the idea. It would make the mod seem more cannon to the story. It was just a thought. It just seems nice to be able to interact with your dragon in such a way.
Are you so sure? Did it not occur to you that her name might already have been set in stone, but she just didn't know what it was, and had to hear it to know that's what her name would be? She didn't neccessarily hear the name and then think, "Wow, that sounds cool. Sure." OR, she could have, in fact, known what her name was, but couldn't say it- note at that time she could only say "Yes" and "Eragon," or she would've TOLD him she was female, instead of waiting for him to figure that out. She could've known her name, just not been able to say it, not knowing how it would sound or how to say/pronounce it because she'd never heard it before.

It's just a thought.
Here's an interesting idea for the names. There can be a command that allows you to offer a name to your dragon. This command can only be used on dragons at the teenage lifestage or older. The command can be called /shurtugal name [name here]. Then a message will pop up on your chat bar that says "Your dragon liked the name you suggested and has chosen it." or "Your dragon does not like that name and has rejected it." It can be a %50 random chance that your dragon will like the name or not. You can suggest the name again and it will still be a %50 chance, or whatever percent there can be. Once the dragon has chosen a name it can't be changed. I think that this idea will suit this mod because it's like how Eragon listed names to Saphira.
I think to save the authors and coders of the work, just leave it as is. But do take out names not related to the Eragon Series. In my opinion people should suggest names for a new list that use a mixture of the same languages Paolini used for his book. I believe he used languages such as Norwegian and Welsh. I'm not sure but I think that's what he did.

Yeah maybe. My idea was more towards interacting with your dragon rather than the actual naming thing. Here is another idea that might be easier. When the dragon is a baby it has no name. But when it reaches the teenage life stage a message pops up in your chat bar that says something like "I have decided that my name will be [name here]" or something like that. The name is still random like before. That sounds like it would be a fun, simple way of adding a bit of immersion. And I slightly agree with you on taking out the names that aren't in the series. Or at least some of them. Having a dragon named Aang just seems a little odd. I liked having a dragon named Parthurnax though. At least that was the name of a dragon so it made some sense.

While i would like to be able to choose my dragons name, I feel it is up to the mod team to decide whether or not you are able to name your own dragon there are valid points on both sides of the argument.
She didn't know her name beforehand. In the chapter "A Name of Power", The chapter after Eragon visits Brom and learns several names from him, Eragon recites the list of names and she chooses Saphira. I will read from the book:

Dude I agree, if she knew her name she would have said "Saphira is my name" but no, she rejected the other names because she was a girl, a command would be nice at least.
Also this will end up being like the sword textures won't it?

So wait a minute, she knew her name but couldn't just say it in a wrong way because she would look stupid? How would she know her name? Also she could speak she just liked messing with Eragon, she was a teenager at that point!

In the movie she knew her name. At the scene where she flies into the sky and then suddenly grows bigger she landed and starts talking to Eragon. She says "I am Saphira." But the movie isn't accurate. The Inheritance series was written by Christopher Paolini, so his story is valid, the movie is not.

No kidding. There was only one part that I liked. The scene where Eragon exits the hut after getting his fortune told and he gets attacked but Brom arrives just in time to help him.
Eragon: "Fortune teller told my future."(I forget what exact words he said)
Brom: "Did she tell you about him?" (motioning to the dead assassin)
That made me laugh. I also liked the way Saphira looked but I didn't count her because she had bird wings; not bat wings and that bothered me. She was well animated though. The animators enjoyed working with her I'm positive.
It really did. I saw the movie before I had read the books and I was already disappointed. However, since I had never read the books and I was very young, I did like it because it was something new, leading me to read the books. It kinda sucks because all those actors and actresses could have done a great job had the writers and directors done better. The only people I didn't see fit was John Malkovich as Galbatorix and Joss Stone as Angela. I always saw Galbatorix as someone much darker (not in terms of skin color) and Angela as someone a little more joyous. In the books she was someone who could fight, in the movie she was more gypsy and less warrior. -sigh- Unfortunately, FOX will most likely NOT give up their rights for Eragon. Which ULTIMATELY sucks. I just hope in the upcoming years with all these movie reboots, they make a new one. But, people are also uninterested because they know how the story works, it's similar to Star Wars and Lord of the RIngs so people can kinda get an idea of what's the plot, and that isn't what people want (except us Eragon fans :D). All we can do is hope that a miracle will happen.... just hope.

I know everyone hates the feathered wings but I thought it was pretty cool to give a dragon a new look. I mean look what they did with Vampires and Werewolves falling in love and s*** in stuff like Twilight.

The part I liked the most was when baby saphira flew into a cloud, got struck by lightning, and magically turned into a full grown dragon who knew perfect English.
Oh, and I also love how the Ra'zac get killed, although they literally make up half of the plot in the second part. I mean, how could they even think of doing that?! Did they think the movies weren't gonna make it to the second one (and they didn't)?....Sorry, I just really hate that movie. I'm gonna stop myself now because if I don't, I'll go on a rant about all of the mistakes the movie had and I don't want to spam this thread.
Lol all you egar eragon peeps of mine ranting about how bad the movie was...... Glad i never had seen it! But news today! I have finished the Energy System for MAGIK! The first official test went well. Ill describe it to you guys a bit: First you take any gem/gem item. You right click it and use a bit of your energy(hunger), to store in the gem. Later when you need to cast a spell it will draw some energy from one of your gem items and if needed your hunger then health. This is a very early version i put to gather and will later include a way to charge a gem with multiple people at the same time. Also i wrote this in the Bukkit API for testing purposes and for one of my eragon PVP plugins! I might have some people come on and help me beta test it some time in the next week but we will see about that!
Ps. I here rumor of dragons being fixed and having new controlable on board attacks?!?!?! Could this be true?!?!??!?

Also with the magic, would there be an option for like destroying objects? Like let's say I want to use brisingr and I don't want it to burn anything around, it can leave the fire and burn people but not blocks.
Ok two things will you be able to put the gems in swords and axes and stuff and then use special powers on that item like brisngr also when will the update come out?

Will the gems have like a bar that tells how much energy they have left? Or maybe when you mouse over them it tells you? And would there be a way to not use the gems, or do you have to use them everytime you have them in your inventory?

Wrong. She could also say "No". also, I agree with RarestDragon AND you, Ethan. Should we cast a vote?
