To make the 'mech models I used Blender, but version 2.4 so I could use a Python utility called Blend2Java, which translates the model into an XML document that Java can read.
maybe have an option to either set up a mining mech, using low lasers or something
I am entertaining that idea. The only problem I see is that getting such a large machine in and out of a mineshaft may prove to be too much of a headache.

DO NOT COMPLAIN TO ME ABOUT GRAPHICS! My art guy is grounded right now, and I'm waiting for him.
The mod did not crash the game. That's a huge point in your favor.
The crafting recipes are solid, the 'mech model entered the game well, and the textures worked well (aside from a minor issue where all of the other mob textures disappeared, but that was my fault, not yours). I'm not sure I like the idea of the 'mech being a mob, but hey, it worked. I'll let you work on the mod.

Oh, sorry! The mech won't be a mob. I'm working on changing that. That was just a development thing. Once it stands still, I'll make it controllable, add a custom model, and release the pre-lease (without weapons)!

If it is at all helpful, I would have a look at either Flan's Airplanes or Vehicles mod if I were you. They are both well done, especially the planes mod, and they should help.

Nah, I've got it (sort of) worked out. I'm going to use LWJGL (coding term - don't ask) to make the controls, and change the boat/minecart model code to make the model. But I might look at those, because it is the same sort of idea. THANK YOU! (P.S. I failed at doing the copy boat files!)

Hmm.. that looks mighty close to a Catapult (see below image). So far, so good!
Ahmmmm... I'm trying to do this mod without editing any base files (or as few as possible). Doing that would require modifying quite a few, actually. I don't see why I should do it, either. Yes, I am planning to make turrets that you place weapons in and use. (Hell's yeah, GAUSS TURRETS!) It's possible to change the menu, but I don't see why.
By custom menu I mean when you start minecraft, you are instead greeted to a mech-themed menu, maybe some extra buttons to press and a different layout than the standard. If that's not possible, maybe a custom texture pack that replaces the MOJANG logo when MC starts up with something else, and changes the spinning background in the main menu to something mech themed?
OT; were you considering one of these for missile defense?
The coder currently working on the mod is currently working on turrets, though I don't know the exact details. Granted, this isn't exactly missile defense, but still menacing. I think that making an AMS system for 'mechs may be a bit too complicated at this point.
And as far as the menus and stuff go, I planned on making a custom texture pack for the mod, as well as some new title splashes. Doing this won't modify anything that any other mods need to run, since it is only images and a text file.

What you are talking about wouldn't modify base files, but what I think the guy before me was suggesting WOULD change base files. Adding new buttons changes base files. Changing the IMAGE on the button, though, no.
