Great mod im going to download and see if it is compatible with my other mods (probably not from the posts i am seeing) anyways yeah good mod if it is no compatible with my mod set ill just have to make a premoded jar with this mod so i can constantly try to find compatibilities and if i screw up i load the pre made jar ill test this within the hour :biggrin.gif:
Okay, here's a good idea: steam-powered elevators. Using the boilers and pipes I suggested earlier, the steam could power a motor, or pistons, or some other kind of machinery to move the elevator.
Also, in real mines it is required that they pump air down into the mines, in order to keep a satisfactory amount of oxygen in the air at all times. Perhaps making it so that, in deep mining, your oxygen levels deplete slowly over time until you start taking damage (not unlike swimming, but much slower) would add a level of realism to the game, or at least prevent you from getting the really good stuff early.
I mean, diamond tools make things easy, too easy in fact, and the fact that they last for long amounts of time make it so that you don't have to spend nearly as many resources on tools. If you had to mine closer to the surface in order to make a steam-powered air pump (another suggestion) so that you could then mine lower down for better resources, then the player would have a goal to accomplish before digging straight down to bedrock in search of diamonds. I know my posts are long. If you've read this far, thanks.
Of course, that sounds kinda complicated, and I'm not sure people would like to have to maintain an air pump in order for them to be able to mine below a certain depth. But I certainly like the idea, and that's why I suggest it.
Also, if you plan on making the coal blocks drop less coal, please reconsider. And excess of coal is required to run steam boilers 24/7, and the easier it is to mine coal, the better for the player.
And on making it ModLoader compatible: just make it bigger. Make it so big that people who want to use other mods can't, thus making ModLoader compatibility worthless. That way, people won't have to worry about mods conflicting. It really gives me a headache when mods conflict, because then I have to fix them, and waste possibly hours of play time.
Well this seems like a very awesome mod I will definitely have to go for a download of it! Infact I will have to download it just to see all the awesome recipes that you've got.
I do see what the 'steam_punker' troll was talking about with your similarities to IndustrialCraft, but frankly I don't care, this mod seems to do them in such a better way.
Anyway, I hope you continue to enjoy coding this mod! Keep up the awesome work! (And the absolutely awesome Troll slaying skills )
Edit: Also, have you considered getting an Adf.ly account? Because I think it would be well worth it for you! Just a suggestion.
Apparently I'm a troll, because valid objections to misinterpreting a genre and mislabeling a mod are according to them purposefully expressed just to get a reaction. A troll is trying to incite drama and get a reaction, I just expressed my anger that this was being passed off as a steampunk mod. Now I feel the need to defend my valid objections as to why this is FantasyCrystalCraft and not SteamCraft.

You imply I stole other mods code? That's a serious accusation. I did nothing of the kind.
Well most of this stuff has been done in various other mods, it seemed suspicious to me but its just as likely that you did the same things that they have done from scratch. Whatever, this isn't my main point, just a note that most of this stuff isn't very original, just cobbled together random features that add nothing to the steampunk theme.

The Nuclear Reactors are simply there to cut out the tedium of smelting large numbers of object. I realise that specific object is not Steampunk.
You ARE, however, incorrect about the Tesla Coil, and this can also be applied to all your other comments about electricity.
Quote from Wikipedia »
Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, alternate history, and speculative fiction that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s. Specifically, steampunk involves an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century and often Victorian era Britain—that incorporates prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy
Take note that it states that Steampunk is an ERA, not simply anything involving steam power. Now, also note that it specifically labels 19th century Britain.
Nuclear power just there to cut the tedium... why not make a magic box with question marks on it that automatically smelts all of your stuff, it fits the genre just as well.
Oh well done, a wikipedia quote. An article that is trying to cover all aspects of the Steampunk genre in one article. You will notice that there is no Steampunk Derivatives page. All of the different sub-genres of Steampunk are lumped together on that page and included in that definition. That includes alternate-history works, Steampunk Fantasy and speculative works like H.G.Wells and Jules Verne.
Steampunk literature, like all science fiction falls into two categories: Science Fiction, and Sci-Fi. Science Fiction is strictly realistic and possible, and obeys its own internal logic. Sci-fi can be fantastic and unrealistic. Your vision of steampunk seems to be the sci-fi version, where fantasy and steampunk meet and there are magical minerals nobody has heard of that can mine diamonds and were taken from a film that has flying castles in it... that is fantasy, not steampunk. Next you'll put in fairies flying around with wrenches in their hands.
Why would people be using dirty coal powered inefficient steam boilers when they have nuclear reactors and chemical batteries and incandescent light bulbs? It doesn't make sense and I don't consider it steampunk.

A Tesla coil is a type of resonant transformer circuit invented by Nikola Tesla around 1891
Note here that this labels the invention in 1891 (which is DURING THE 19TH CENTURY), and that it is NOT a weapon, but, as it says here, a "resonant transformer circuit", effectively requiring electrical charge to jump from one place to another - hence the use as a transmitter.
I believe I specifically said that the Tesla coil is a weapon IN MOST OTHER GAMES. I am well aware of the works of Nikola Tesla sir, and of how sci-fi the tesla coil is.
Quote from Proloe »
I have stated many times, there is such a thing as a hand drill. Many people have never seen one, because our current age makes use of only power drills, but they do exist and certainly did exist during the 19th century.
I am well aware that there were wooden hand drills for many hundreds of years, but since I have not played your mod because it is not steampunk I wouldn't know exactly whether yours is steampunk or not. I'd guess not.
I am well aware of the Floating City of Laputa, I made a version of it on Mcshematics.com that won an award and was featured in a Yogscast. Since wikipedia seems to be the gospel in your eyes:
Quote from Wikipedia »
Muska takes Sheeta into Laputa's core, a chamber holding a gigantic Volucite/Aetherium crystal that serves as the city's power source
A magical crystal that makes the island float with... magic. Unlike in the original Gulliver's Travels novel in which a giant magnet lodestone is used, which while probably impossible is at least more realistic than a magical crystal.

Quote from Wikipedia »
Alessandro Volta's battery, or voltaic pile, of 1800, made from alternating layers of zinc and copper, provided scientists with a more reliable source of electrical energy than the electrostatic machines previously used.
An example of a battery in 1800, with reference to previously used electric generators in the past.
You seem to have a misguided idea as to what Steampunk actually is.
C'mon man there is massive difference between a primitive chemical battery that I know was mostly only used for telegraph transmissions (which I actually included as a suggestion) until electromagnetism was discovered, and a freaking quartz crystal battery, another battery and electric lamps with incandescent light bulbs. They're not steampunk, you may as well put in an electric generator or a nuclear... oh nvm.
THEN WHY CALL IT STEAMCRAFT?! Call it FantasyCraft or EtheriumCraft or something. If someone wants to make an actual SteamCraft mod they either have to call it something else or constantly be confused with this.
Quote from Proloe »
I said "directly" relevant, meaning everything has some link to it in some way or another.
Everything has some link to everything in some way or another.
A real SteamCraft mod would have, for example: STEAM, boilers, pipes, pistons, valves, coal derivates (coke, coal dust etc), gas seam blocks, gas lamps, brass gas canisters, brass goggles, , etc etc.
Quote from Proloe »
I do have Brass Goggles, but why not just SUGGEST these things? Who says I WOULDN'T make this? I actually think it could be quite interesting. I hadn't thought of using steam in the way you suggest.
Because the whole mod is already so ridiculous, I gave up on finding a real SteamCraft here after the batteries and lightbulbs and uranium and fanstasy crystals. Here's a suggestion: Steam, Coal, Gas, Wind, Water, maybe oil and derivates of those. That's it for power.
Quote from Proloe »
You seem to be quite misguided by the name of steampunk. It is not just about steam power, but about the entire Victorian era around the late 1800's/early 20th century.
Dude I have read almost every piece of steampunk literature there is. I know what steampunk is. Steampunk is a feel, its an atmosphere and an aesthetic. An atmosphere that is destroyed by ridiculous aberrations that don't fit the theme. In almost every single steampunk work of fiction they use gas lamps or candles. In The Difference Engine they had computers but they were mechanical and steam-driven. They had cars that were steam driven. They had clockwork automatons. They did not have nukes and quartz batteries and Unobtanium and tesla coils.
I've made my point, and wasted too much time on this fruitless pursuit. I just didn't want people to think that I conceded to your ridiculous points and wikipedia quotes. I won't be visiting this thread again so say what you will.
I already have IndustrialCraft, I thought that this was SteamCraft?!
My spirits were buoyed when I first read this mod name but now they have crashed miserably low. Most of your additions are related to lighting, aesthetics, or changing existing blocks. You seem to have little knowledge of the steam punk genre or of steam engines/technology in general.
So many steam devices and cool things are possible but you've managed to avoid them all, well done.
in my opinion, this is one of the best mods i have ever seen
so just shut up and stop trolling
@steam_punker
Just because you have read a lot of steam-punk novels does not mean you understand it, although i will admit that you may be knowledgeable on the subject. However, that in no way gives you the right to be an arrogant asshole. okay?
well on a lighter note >< I have gotten pretty far in mining minerals. and i am up to the Chemical Furnace. I do have one problem with the mod. is that i can mine obsidian with a steam pick which form me lets me completely skip the Diamond tool and armor set. >< I like the mod but would like the steam pick not able to mine Obsidian. Keep up the good work ^^
sometimes....it just gets TO FREAKIN RIDICULOUS
How long did it take to code all this crap*? srsly!
my god! this is almost like industrial craft... TOO MUCH TO EVEN REMEMBER
*Crap is a rly bad word for what youve done here. sry. i mean to say...eh...EPICOSITY! yea!
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Sadface...Couldn't think of a good sig...SO I thought i could use a little MA-JIK-HA *snort snort*
I do have one problem with the mod. is that i can mine obsidian with a steam pick which form me lets me completely skip the Diamond tool and armor set. >< I like the mod but would like the steam pick not able to mine Obsidian.
From my point of view steam tools are more expensive than diamond ones ... so they should by all means mine obsidian. And btw ... obsidian armor brakes faster than diamond - not a fan of that.
Love the picture :tongue.gif: and i can see your point and i guess i'm not much for circuitry in minecraft so i don't really use copper >< so figure hmm brass ^^
Steampunk literature, like all science fiction falls into two categories: Science Fiction, and Sci-Fi.
hey smartchild sci-fi is an abreviation for science fiction
and if you dont like it, dont troll and annoy people who actually do like it
Quote from Wikipedia aka The Gospel »
By the 1970s, critics within the field such as Terry Carr and Damon Knight were using sci-fi to distinguish hack-work from serious science fiction,[19] and around 1978, Susan Wood and others introduced the pronunciation "skiffy". Peter Nicholls writes that "SF" (or "sf") is "the preferred abbreviation within the community of sf writers and readers".[20] David Langford's monthly fanzine Ansible includes a regular section "As Others See Us" which offers numerous examples of "sci-fi" being used in a pejorative sense by people outside the genre.[21]

Great mod. I know it will improve in the future.
I don't even care if it is incompatible with other mods.
absolutely destroys industrialcraft, not too complicated, not too simple.
thing is, proloe, do you think you could write in the proper tooltips for the items?
right now it gets kind of confusing.
thanks ! :biggrin.gif:
EDIT: OHHH SILLY ME.
nevermind. i forgot to install the .lang.
thank you tons !

Dude. You should be shot for even mentioning that shitty movie.
Granted the spider was epic but the movie almost killed steampunk for me as a kid. >_>
