According to the latest from Jens, standing motionless uses no food. This means sleeping will also use no food unless I make a change. Thoughts?
Maybe make it so that it goes down a little bit.
It makes sense to not use as much stamina when you're not doing anything, but it's still over a couple hours.
I doubt I'll be able to change the idle hunger rate without risking compatibility problems. I also don't ever want to set the food bar value. I'd rather make small changes over time so you don't wake up hungry after only a brief nap.
My initial thought is that sleeping will slowly drain food but also heal you over time. If you're at full health, it will drain food a bit more slowly than if you're hurt. This accomplishes three things:
Bed rest is better for recovering from wounds, and you'll need to be well-nourished.
People recovering from wounds will require more food, as some of the energy goes toward healing them.
The longer you sleep, the hungrier you'll be when you wake up. If you take a nap, it will only drain a little, and you might only require a small snack. If you sleep all night, it will drain more, which will encourage you to eat breakfast.
Of course, the rates will be configurable as they are now.
As for sleeping while you're hungry, you already start taking damage when your food bar is empty, and Somnia wakes you up if you take any damage while sleeping. Combining these two behaviors, it will be hard to sleep while you're starving. You'll keep waking up.
Thanks for the feedback, guys. Keep it coming. What do you think of this?

I like it. The idea of sleeping to recover health is a good one.
Hey MALfunction84, I absolutely freaking love this mod. I saw it on PbatVG's channel, in minecraft survival. I genarally don't use many mods besides flying, mini-map and TooManyItems, but this is just to good to resist! I mean, I just don't like changing the game, I like the original minecraft feel, not MoCreatures or anything, and I don't use texture packs. But this is just perfect! Notch should definitely use it. I havn't actually had a chance to try it yet tho, I just decided to download it today, but 1.8 you know... I have been checking for this mod every hour for 13 hours, it will definitely be one of my all time favorites.
PS It also fixes the "monster-spawning-in-ur-house-trying-to-kill-you-even-tho-your-house-is-super-bright-and-theres-no-dirt-in-it-glitch," YAY!!! Definitely deserves
I think he said it will very slowly take it away, so if you sleep the whole night, you will need to eat breakfast in the morning, but if you only take a small nap, you only need a snack.

Updated for Client Beta 1.8.1. (Note: Performance across the board took a huge hit in Minecraft 1.8, and the simulation speed suffers as a result.)
You grow hungry when sleeping. The rate varies based on the difficulty and whether or not you are at full health.
Increased healing rates while sleeping to account for the new hunger mechanics. Delete your .minecraft/config/Somnia.cfg file to reset to the new defaults.
This is one of those spot on mods that adds a very obvious functionality while still retaining the core feeling of Minecraft. Why this isn't how sleeping actually works in-game, I will never know.
I installed modloader, then this mod. Started up the game, everything was dandy. When i tried to go to sleep it went to saving chunks. Made a new world and placed a bed randomly, went to saving chunks again when attempting to use the bed :/.
Very odd. Just to be sure, you are using Minecraft 1.8.1 and ModLoader 1.8.1, right? Do you have any other mods installed?
Can you check .minecraft/ModLoader.txt and see if there are any errors listed?
