Bad news everyone! After spending my entire evening trying to get Somnia working with the newest version of Minecraft and Forge, I learned the following things:
Mojang completely changed everything in 1.3. This was expected, but I was hoping to at least get something working tonight.
Forge completely changed everything in this latest release, converting all hooks into events. I have yet to wrap my head around how it all works.
This means I have to rewrite Somnia entirely from scratch in addition to wrestling with the learning curve of the New Way of Doing Things.
This is very annoying and very discouraging. I'm not giving up on Somnia, but just understand that there will be a significant delay before there are any more releases. Sorry, guys.
Just wanted to say thanks for an awesome mod & take your time getting it updated, seems this update turned almost everything upside down. Cant wait, but I shall
As an update, I've submitted code to Minecraft Forge that should provide the functionality I need to rewrite Somnia. I've more or less figured out the New Way of Doing Things, so the rewrite can begin as soon as they accept my changes.
Sometimes it helps to trow a stick in a hen-house...
I know about the forge thing but since nothing is happening on that side there is no update.
That forge API might be better but if you're not able to continue your work it's questionable.
I get the feeling of kid that's promised a candy.... later... and it might never come.
Don't mistake my inpatient for bad comment, I'm a big Somna fan.

I've weighed the alternatives, and waiting on Forge is still the best option. Trust me, I don't like waiting either, but they've already more-or-less approved the idea behind what I submitted. It's just a matter of time before it's merged in and I can rewrite Somnia with SMP support. LexManos is a busy man. Give him time.
Coming here and asking me to relinquish the mod doesn't help anyone. I'm not sure what you hoped to accomplish. Still, it's no big deal. I wish I had better news, but we're still just waiting.
Got question are you working on the code for somnia even thought hook has not merged with main branch forge(As assume that it just when they get around to add hook)? Hmm let put another way is only thing left for you to do is before releasing somnia is that hook be merged into forge?

No, I still have to rewrite the whole mod. I haven't begun work yet because I haven't had time this week, but I do plan to begin the rewrite before my change is merged.
There are still plenty of opportunities for more delays. I might encounter other changes I need to submit to Forge, or they might change what I submitted before they merge it.
At least the mod balances things. The con of using it is that you need to be somewhere safe to sleep similar to the beta says. It's nice to sleep while you have steaks cooking without a chance of burning while I take a nap.

All these pony-based signatures aren't going to win these people any respect.
Indeed! This mod goes GREAT with Kinniken's Millénaire NPC villages mod; simulating the world while you sleep means that children have a chance to grow up and new ones can be born; without it you have to either play through the night or live with villages that stagnate fast!
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?
Aw, I figured it would be updated by now, since it's been a while since I checked.
Oh well, I guess I can tell you to just keep doin' what you're doin'.
Although I do politely request an update (on the situation, not the mod), if you have the time to respond.
Real life, and all that.
As for conversation more about the use of the mod and less about the mod itself, it makes it less head-deskingly slow to play Metallurgy.
If you want maximum output, you must:
Crush everything. Which, at best, takes three times (more or less, I don't actually know the numbers) as long as smelting.
Combine dusts to form any alloys you want, which only takes a minor amount of time, but is still just one more step.
Smelt everything. Metallurgy does include some faster working metal furnaces, but for maximum output you must use stone furnaces to still get EXP (last time I checked).
And only then can you actually craft something. GRR!
I wonder if I can hook a Buildcraft engine up to those things to make them arbitrarily work faster...
The change I submitted to Forge is still sitting in the queue. (Please don't go pester those guys about it. They have enough on their plates already.)
In the meantime, I am assuming they will merge it in with no changes, so I'm working on rewriting the mod. As I've said before, there is quite a learning curve to make it work in multiplayer. Every step forward reveals a lot more new frontier. The first version I release will be very basic... no fancy interactions or configuration options.
I hadn't planned to bring this up, but truth be told, Real Life is preventing me from spending as much time on this as I would like. It's all good news, just not good news for Somnia fans. My wife and I just bought a house, we're about to move into it, and we have a new baby. I expect to be able to devote a lot more time after the move, but I am slowly making progress as it is.

Thanks for being patient, everyone.
Thanks for the heads-up, man. I hope everything goes well for you!
Also, I'm not sure about anyone else, but I at least know not to pester the Forge people.
I know they have a lot on their plate, and on their shoulders. That could be part of why Lex can seem like a ***** sometimes: he's stressed out. That, and he has a zero idiocy tolerance.
Which more people need. *sigh*

Oh my gosh! A new baby! Congrats and well wishes to you from myself and my family (who all adore your mod). We hope everything goes well for you.
Even my brother, who just does not like mods, is hanging out for this mod to be updated.
Also when you've got time do you think you could possibly make a tutorial on modding (when you've figured out the problems with somnia of course...)
Once more great mod, I've barely used vanilla sleeping since 1.3

A lot changed in 1.3. The next version of Somnia will work in multiplayer, and I've determined that Forge provides the best API for me to get it done.
Dude, seriously? The mod is not dead. I am just waiting on my change to be included in Forge.
Good Lord, man! You might wanna try reading the last couple pages before making statements like that.

I wonder if I can hook a Buildcraft engine up to those things to make them arbitrarily work faster... Eh, they'll probably never do that; even if only because not everyone has a rig that can simulate the world at all, let alone at a decent pace.
Thanks for the heads-up, man. I hope everything goes well for you!
