When you craft torches, you get Unlit Torches that have a black top instead of an orange top. Then, to light the torch, you simply left click on a stone block, like the torch is a match. You can also use Flint and Steel to light a placed Unlit Torch.
Furnaces no longer burn when they just have fuel and an item to smelt/cook. There four options for lighting the furnace:
- Right-click the furnace with a Lit Torch
- Right-click the furnace with a Fire Charge
- Right-click the furnace with Flint and a Fire Striker (I'll get to that in a bit)
Furnaces do not need to be lit if the fuel is something like a Bucket of Lava or Blaze Rods.
Digging gravel has a very low chance of dropping iron nuggets. Five iron nuggets in the crafting table in the shape of a C crafts a Fire Striker: the steel in "flint and steel." Flint and Steel is changed so that it is no longer one item. To create fire, you must right-click with flint in one hand and a Fire Striker in the other. Starting a fire with Flint and a Fire Striker takes 2-3 tries, with each click producing spark particles. This makes Fire Charges a more sought-after fire starter since it takes only one slot and has 100% chance of successfully starting a fire.
