So a mod i've been wanting for a very long time has been a functional and balanced nomadic tents mod.
The basic concept is this:
There are tent of several designs and sizes. For example, let's use the most famous design of nomadic tent, the yurt:
You make the tent like an item. It takes a decent amount of wool and wood (in the form of poles). You'd make a few "walls" of fabric, let's say six, a roof and side poles, and then finally a door.
When you finish the construction of your tent, you find a flat area and use the item, and it shows a phantom of the footprint of how much room it will take. When you accept the position, poles are erected in a circle in the area it will rest in.
From there you take a hammer and basically whack at the area for a while. It slowly puts up piece by piece, wall by wall, until finally the roof and door are put on.
You can enter the door, and you are transported to what i assume could be considered a pocket dimension game-wise. In this area is the size of the tent interior with tent walls and a roof. You can place anything inside. When you're done, you can exit the tent and arrive back into the overworld, and pick up your tent. All of your stuff will stay inside, but you'll need to go through the process of setting up your tent again if you want to reach it.
The tent should take a decent amount of time to erect but not too much as to be unfun, just balanced. You'll have to plan to do it earlier in the day if you want to finish it before nightfall, etc.
There could be different designs, sizes, etc.
If possible, the top-middle ventilation hole in the roof could show you the time of day in the overworld.
If you need more details of yurt design, construction and setup, I'll help research. I've helped erect them IRL in the past but i was a child, so i barely remember much, but i do remember enough to have wanted this mod for so long
I could try this in 1.7.10, but custom block rendering is beyond me for 1.8. I'll try it first in 1.7.10 and if the logic works it shouldn't be too hard to update.

Mod specifications (at least, how I'm doing it):
- Use cloth and sticks in recipe for tent Done
-------> Refine recipes to be balanced and include vanilla door Done. No door, though.
- Make different tiers of tents using different recipes (larger interiors but same size exteriors) Done
- Make tent as item Done
- Use tent item to place construction blocks Done
- Use tool on construction blocks to build tent Done
- Create see-through barrier-like block to let players see time of day but keep players inside their Tent Done
- Make each tent door and tent item "remember" where the tent corresponds to in the "Tent Dimension" Done
- Make each tent door and tent item remember a UNIQUE area in the "Tent Dimension" Finally Done!
- Click on tent door to be teleported to empty "Tent Dimension" Done
- Create (if not already created) an area in the "Tent Dimension" that represents the interior of the tent Done
- Depending on the tent, player should teleport to specific x,y,z in "Tent Dimension" Done
- Depending on the tent, the interior should be different sizes Done
- Click on tent door to exit to the overworld tent at a specific x,y,z Done
- Deconstruct tent (revert to item) by breaking the door with the hammer Done
- Tent dimension tents should have at least one layer of dirt to allow the player to dig firepits, etc. Done
- Wall textures should connect when a similar block is below / above Done
- Roof textures should connect when adjacent to a sloped block Kind of done
- Optional:
+ Door color should be able to change Done (kind of)
+ Allow tents to be colored differently
+ Create sloped block to round out the tent structure (top and sides?)
Textures:
- Texture for Tent tool / hammer Done
- Texture for tent door (upper and lower) Done
- Texture for tent roof Done
- Texture for tent wall Done
- Texture for tent floor (when in Tent Dimension -- maybe just grass or dirt will do) Done
- Texture for canvas flap (used only to craft tent wall piece item) -- 16x16 Done
- Texture for tent wall piece Item (used only to craft the Tent item) -- 16x16 OR 32x32 Done
- Different textures for each tier of tent (there are currently 3) -- 16x16 OR 32x32 Done
Ideas I can't do :
x Digging in the dirt layer(s) in Tent dimension should be reflected in Overworld.
- - - One tent size in the overworld (5x5) corresponds with any tent size (6x6 and 7x7) in the Tent Dimension. If I can have extra-dimensional space, I might as well use all of it!
I will keep updating this post as features are completed or added
Here's some images from very-early development:
Crafting Recipes (each tier of tent takes 4 more wall sections):
Screenshots (very messy and very lazy textures, sorry).
These are the "frame" blocks -- hitting each one long enough builds it up into a wall block (blue for now). All the frames and the door are formed by using the Item, but the door will do nothing until the whole thing is complete. The inside of the room is 3x3 when generated in the Tent dimension.
The finished tent: as you can see, it is very minimalist right now. I was more worried about dimensions, teleporting, and tile entity stuff and have not tried to improve aesthetics. Probable improvements: sloped or stair-stepped blocks (forming a border around roof) to make the top more smooth.
Mid-development (the textures change everything!)
Inside small Yurt:
Outside small Yurt:
- - - Still working on sloped roof, this is not final.
i can actually do the textures for you! i made the 3d model in my avatar and i do illustration so pixel icons should be easy, i'll work on that tonight
however specifications for the tent wall textures themselves -- all need to be the same repeating 16x16 texture? would possibly look rather repetitive. is there a possibility that the wall and roof could be different textures and both those textures be 16x32 (like a door?). Could also be 16x64 if you wanted to have the roof and wall as one continuous texture
EDIT: I, too, will edit this post with texture progress. (these are enlarged previews, i'll send the 16x16 in a zip when im finished)
Mallet:
so this is the mallet, shown on a slightly darker background to display the cloth wrapped around the handle.
my idea for the cloth on the handle is included in the recipe. i assume the cloth item that you craft that is used in walls will be the same used in the mallet. (i actually have an idea for most the recipes if you'd like me to create visuals and explanations. it's a multi-step progression like the hangglider mod in 1.7.10 where you had to make all the pieces separately with a LOT of leather)
but the recipe would more or less be one of these two, with the wool as a placeholder for the cloth
i figure you just use a normal default door in the recipie of the tent construction itself, but if you decide to make the tent a specific color during the process, the door color will change to respect the overall palette of the tent itself.
Wall/Roof:
here's wip of the tent walls. unsure of these, might tweak them but the general idea is here.
this is using my 16x32 texture format idea. if you need actual /models/ for the tent walls, i do 3dcg for a living so i could make those for you as well.. :u i actually have the construction pinging around my head
tiled:
roof texture, perhaps? I would need to see the actual tent model/setup to accurately texture it, so this is more or less a concept for the moment until i can tweak it with the tent's ingame construction in mind
Tarp/cloth item texture
not much to be said here. i can recolor the sprite in the future if needed.
Interior roof + walls
the interior version of the roof and wall textures, to reflect IRL yurt construction
interior wall:
interior roof:
So i'm uploading a zip of the game-sized image files for you to play with.
I'll be doing the different versions of the tent texture themselves when i get a better idea of the actual yurt model in-game
but for now these should be functional. I added both 16x32 and 32x32 versions of the yurt walls/roof, both versions optimized to tile correctly with the new resolutions
EDIT: updated link download with interior wall/roof and a fixed 16x32 exterior wall to be compataible with the 32x32 version
i don't know if this site allows double posts but i'd like to put ideas for functionality (specifically tent construction from a 3d perspective) in this post
i did a really quick mockup in 3d of my concept for the tent model. each 'face' is a block, and with this method it could translate to minecraft's blockiness quite well. i've worked with isometric pixel architexture in the past and it's quite similar to minecraft for obvious reasons
i haven't worked in the actual 3d format that minecraft requires so i'll need to look into the modeling programs people have made for 1.8 mods (there's a few that i've seen) so i can produce these for you if needed
So a mod i've been wanting for a very long time has been a functional and balanced nomadic tents mod.
I'm proud to say that this mod is now complete for 1.7.10! The Yurts can be built, deconstructed, accessed, and everything else you requested.
The only feature I could not complete: the Yurt does not look as isometric or smooth as your model.
Custom renders are hard enough, but there are no triangles in Minecraft code. It is possible to use a .OBJ model file to render a block, but I do not have any experience making those.
The textures you made were a big help I recolored your door design to indicate tent size.
Here is the project page on Curse -- please let me know what should change before I finish the 1.8 version.
I plan to add more types of tents, such as the Bedouin tent. Textures for this would be appreciated, but no rush. Any other ideas?

The dimensions, structures, etc. were easy to update, but the textures were a nightmare. However, I learned important things about 1.8 texture binding that will help me update my other mods. Either way, the new version is once again available through Curse!
One thing I added: the "Super Mallet" for lazy or Creative players. It builds all nearby frame blocks and effectively insta-builds the Yurts. I added it as compensation for having to manually craft the Yurt items even in Creative mode.

donno if you actually want or need me to do the models but i'd still like to learn for my own purposes

Awwww
I wanted there to be some funny/ wacky result.
Like if the tent item was in a chest, you pop out of said chest, or if it's in someone's inventory, you pop out of them.
WARNING:
My output of snark depends on your output of stupidity.

That would be so weird. And funny
If I hadn't spent 6 hours designing the Tile Entity logic I might have tried to work it in
What would happen if someone throws your tent into lava before you get out ?
If the tent item is destroyed, the corresponding tent, and everything in it, should be deleted.

recoloring of the doors works great Sorry i couldn't do alternative textures, got distracted by irl stuff )8
really excited to try this, thanks ^^
also, if i can figure out 3d model quirks and such of minecraft (probably in 1.8+ specifically) would you be willing to try a smoother look?
ive heard that the model format is really odd but i might have a look at it
