Market Crates has been an Idea I've had for quite some time, I'd love some feedback and information on how do-able this may be if I go forward into looking up ways to actually develop it
If you've ever been to an outside/farmers market, You've probably seen vendors with boxes/crates of fruits and vegetables. Mine craft has always seemed to lack attractive ways to show off your food items you've hoarded. This mod idea might be able to fix that. This mod would be made to also compliment many of the food mods out there (harvestcraft, food plus, ect)
The Concept:
- Crate would be crafted using any color of wood half slabs (Oak slabs would yield an oak crate, spruce slabs would yield a spruce oak crate, ect). The recipe might be something of the following (o - empty space, s - slab):
o o o
s s s
s s s
- When placed, the player can shift right click the crate to open a UI a Slot to put a stack of items. I've also considered giving it a few more slots for strictly storage, the one slot would be just for visual/aethstetics
- The number of items in the crate is reflected visually. Putting one item in the slot would show just one item. Putting an entire stack of the item would result in a randomly oriented pile, with a slight overflow (see pictures below for examples). Items would render as the would show up if you threw them on the ground (like the 3D 2D sprite style) to prevent the need to make a bunch of 3D models of various mods. (will re-explain if this is confusing). I MAY consider in the future adding pre-added 3-D options (probably vanilla objects such as wood logs, Paper, apples, reeds, ect) in the future if I do go through with this)
- The UI would also have a way to organize the visible stack to be either neat and tidy, or a randomly organized pattern. I was thinking a button you could click somewhere in the UI
- Right clicking on the crate would give you just one item out of the stack. It would be visually reflected in the stack. If I take one apple from the crate, there will be one less on the top of the pile.
-Crates could be locked so they can only serve as a visual item.
- Crates can be connected/disconeccted from each other
Pictures/Ideas Because I'm terrible at explanations:
Crate would look similar to this and display the items as so:
in all the towns and villages i've made in minecraft i really like putting markets. i've thought about chests but it didnt work. this is a good idea! maybe allow any item, so custom support wouldnt be needed for mods?

I would probably allow any item, I was thinking however for some I would include pre made visual item stacks(proper term? I don't know?) . For example, Paper would not appear the same as if you just threw in apples, it would appear like a stack of papers. Wood logs would appear as well, normal wood logs, long and stacked. I'd probably want it set up so you could set up a config to disable custom Item stacks. Other mods would probably show up just as normal items in a pile.
The issue with just using the 2d/3d vanilla item models is when you have 4 crates, each with 25 items, you are rendering 100 items, which will become laggy. That is the reason Mojang made stacks merge on the ground.
Soo, after a little bit of screwing around in the code I came up with something:
Let me know if you want it published!
and if i should add the oak, spruce & jungle version (maybe the dark oak & accacia to?)
EDIT:
- The crate can hold any item/block in the game
- On right click it will open a gui with 6 slots
- every item placed in any slot, gets randomly placed in the crate with a random rotation
Oh man this turned out great! I think adding support for all wood types would be great! I saw a post earlier remarking about the lag it might cause. Has there been any performance issues with it? I would also like to test compatibility with other mods. If you want, I'd love to work with you and develop a few other containers/display items similar to this to add to the mod. I really appreciate this :)! This looks really nice. I'll create a few screenshots when It releases fully on saturday :D! Thank you very much for making my idea a reality!
EDIT:
Baskets might also make a nice addition to the mod as well, In fact, I came up with a model that might interest you. It would act the same way as the Crates, But be visually different.
A possible crafting recipe:
B= Bowl
S=Sticks/wheat
O= Empty Space
OOO
SBS
OSO
Here is a screenshot of the basket, since techne seems to be having issues uploading. PM me if you are interested in working with the model. Thank you again for your hard work :)!
EDIT 2: (Oh man I'm on a roll today *eyeroll*)
Just realized that the Slab recipe I recommended originally is actually take by Bibliocraft's Iables (I'm so smart). Up for suggestions as what might be a possible alternative Sorry though :C
I understand a lot of people want to see the mod for 1.7.10 and 1.8. It's honestly up to IFaoanl. I just came up with the Idea. It's a lot of work to update to 1.8. It's not impossible: It just requires a whole overwrite of everything in the mod. Understand that if he/she chooses to keep develop in both 1.7.10 and 1.8, the 1.8 version might take a little while. Another mod author wrote what changed in 1.8 here that makes it so difficult. Please don't harass other mod authors into updating. It's rude and very offputting. They will get there when they get there.
Im sorry, i didn't mean to be rude to IFaoanl, i also never asked him/her to make this mod for both 1.8 and 1.7.10 i was only curious to know if the mod was going to be for 1.7.10 and 1.8, i wouldn't be mad if it was not meant to be for 1.8. And it's not as if i had posted a ton of other comments asking authors of mods to uptade their mods to 1.8
I also wasn't aware of the changes in 1.8 thus making me believe it would not be a complicated process to make it for both 1.7.10 and 1.8.

No worries, It's just that some people assume that it's very easy to rewrite a mod when the coding changes. I just wish people were more aware of the changes that make updating to 1.8 a little more difficult. :o)
I've kinda thought The Market Crate Mod might be the name, But I will discuss the name with Ifaoanl and see if he/she would like to name it something they wanted.
I'm eagerly awaiting release too. As it is, it's very hard to make a kitchen that's more than a furnace and a couple of chests, so it'll be awesome to have some decorations that are actually functional.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
You want a farm, you grab a hoe. You want a boat, you grab some wood. You want a fireplace, you grab A FLAMING HELL-BOULDER BECAUSE THAT'S HOW MINECRAFTERS ROLL!!!
I've been busy getting back into the swing of things for college, I should be PMing Ifanaol about things by the end of the week to update him and see what needs to be done on my part.

Is this mod still happening? I would love to have this mod, since I'm building a lot of markets and would love to display food. I would use cooking plus but it's only in 1.8 and my most essential mods are still in 1.7.
If I helped you in any way or agree in my ideas or posts, make sure you click that green arrow pointing up below my post or simply huggle me! I use 1.7.10 (Modded), so when I comment that I like a 1.8 mod, I will comment to downgrade to 1.7.10. I support no pics, no clicks. Suggestions that I think that are the best deserves a banner!
It is almost time to say goodbye to 1.7.10 because of the recent surge of big 1.9 mods.
Why MCreator sucks: jcm2606's file (doesn't open a new tab) He allows/welcomes anyone to link the file, so I put it here in my signature for people to know how MCreator functions. I thank jcm2606 (he's awesome) for creating the document/file and I'm just here to spread the word.

Hi, I've been working on a cooking mod with something similar to what you're requesting, here's a link in case you're interested:
