Mountaineering: Minecraft Style
This is my first time posting anything on this site period, so here goes.
If I knew how to make the ideas I have a reality, the mod would be up here already, with dozens (it's a little niche-y) of downloads and happy players being Minecraft mountaineers.
Imagine mountains that shoot up from bedrock, and top out at the max height, massive overhangs casting nearly black shadows on a near vertical face. Along with the threat of injury the peaks seem to radiate, there is frostbite, altitude sickness, hunger, thirst, and sleep. Pack space is limited, so you can only bring the essentials. A bundle of rope arrows, a few grappling hooks, a couple stale loaves of bread, and a couple torches, if you get stuck on the face when night falls. What could possibly make all this torture worth it? The amazing views, and the overwhelming sense of accomplishment once you reach the summit.
Using MCedit, I've made just such mountains, and with the Ropes+ mod, I've been able to climb them in the most insane ways possible (climbing clean, never damaging the rock, not using the hookshot, minimal supplies, etc.,), but it's missing that authentic threat of the environment. I've recently started to use the Villagers mod, allowing me to have a "partner" to climb with, and increase the anxiety for a more satisfying summit.
I would have no problem making mountainous maps for people to play on, as the complexities of a fun, technical mountain most likely wouldn't translate well to a world generator. If this could somehow all come together, it would be the dream mod of Minecraft for me, but if not...
I'll hang in there!
Here's a look from the base of climb above, aptly named Death's Head.
Thanks for reading and checking out the pics, hope it inspires someone out there!
I'm just wondering if frostbite, altitude sickness, thirst and sleep are not all things that could be added normally without being necessarily for mountaineering.
As for mountains starting from bedrock, this would radically change the way a normal world would be generated I would think. Instead, is it possible to make mountains higher than Y=128?

I was playing 1.7.2 earlier today, and noticed the "amplified" mode. Gave it a go with the seed "I live to climb", and was not disappointed. The canyon was massive, but I have no idea if there were blocks underneath, as the canyon walls were upwards of 180 blocks high. I think 256 is the maximum height allowable.
That'd be awesome if you could have a more realistic survival experience, and yes, not just have it apply for mountaineering. I was getting at making a Ropes+ and "survival" (for lack of a better word) combo to allow my hijinks to continue, and perhaps get some others into it.
Sadly, I don't think that the world generator (or any for that matter) could make the mountains in such a way as to preserve the "technical" climbs that I've gotten used to building and doing. If it's an option, I'm all ears. Going up something that's randomly generated would have a whole new feel of exploration for the climb, and that sounds fantastic.
Well, if "Mountainous" was a new biome, different to "Extreme hills", I am sure would be possible to have it generated in such ways as to preserve the technical climbs, as in, it would not generate with a slope and rise directly up.
To make it look realistic, it would spawn similarly as a river separating two biomes (like for India's crushing in Asia) or following a coast line (like the rocky mountains).
I think though that it would be cool to have caves at some points in them, and that it should have some sort of layers like bedrock or cobble stone to break the monotony of the stone. Also, why not spawn some ores at sight, which would give a good reason to have to climb it.
What strikes me with the picture you posted looking down is I can see somebody use a glider to go down, that would be awesome

I've been making whole worlds dedicated to the mountains, so I've avoided that biome bugaboo. As long as they're high up, steep/overhanging, and visually appealing, I'm totally happy.
I wasn't even thinking spelunking. Good idea! Also, I like the natural separation idea too. That would look great from far away, and it'd add some dynamics to the scenery.
And now that you've said glider, it seems a natural inclusion. Descend in style!

This seems to be going the direction of an all-in-one exploration mod. Ropes, gliders, heatstroke, frostbite, hunger, thirst, sleep, and maybe even an injury system. I gotta learn to mod Minecraft.
I have to admit some of the far mountains look silly ^^' otherwise I really like the idea and I don't understand how such mountains are not already part of the generation processes.
Hunger is already a part of Minecraft, and thirst could be interesting, but I have the impression it would be making it too complex. Instead, it drinking water should have a low saturation of hunger, as in, it may replenish the bar, but only for a shorter time than say a loaf of bread.
Frostbite and heatstroke would happen when somebody wears the wrong kind of equipment at a certain temperature for a long time in my belief. So unless one wears a full leather (hide, not latex) suit, one would suffer of frostbite, while under hot temperature one should simply wear fire protection or no-metal equipment.
Sleep seems unnecessary though in my opinion, it would add to realism but take away from game effect, especially if one is on a server and can't really sleep.
So how different do you want the rope from this mod? The mod you are using to ride up actually seems very fine as is. The real thing that needs to be added for a Mountaineer mod is a new biome, and simply being coupled with this mod, no?

I've got an adventure map made, with a few things I'd like to incorporate into my future mod. It's my first map, so let me know how it is.
It requires no mods, and the resource pack comes with it (it doesn't change much). You're going from camp to camp on your way to the summit, food is limited, weather can be a hassle (blizzards make you move slowly and blind you), and you can randomly be hit with altitude sickness, making it very easy to fall into a crevasse, or off of something. It's rough, but the two topics tie in, so I had to put the link here.
