I know there are a lot of these apocalypse mods. The issue I have with these is they make the surface uninhabitable and sometimes impossible to venture outdoors. So here's my idea. Upon activation, a meteor shower will begin, causing much surface damage. After a certain amount of time, a large asteroid will impact. The impact should be far away, but still within view. The blast leaves a giant crater and sterilizes the surface of all mobs and plant life, as well as evaporating water. the blast should level anything directly hit. The blast should be stopped after hitting so many blocks in a row. For example, It will damage the face of a mountain, but cannot pass all the way due to thickness. A building sticking up past a hill may be protected on the lower area, but any exposed areas are destroyed. After so many days, a player may go outside, only to see an infinitely overcast sky and a barren, lifeless landscape. Players may attempt to plant trees, etc. and populate mobs.
In short, players will still have to stockpile supplies to survive, due to the destruction. But the difference is it is 100% safe to leave your shelter. It isn't pretty, and you can never see the sun again, but there isn't any radiation or extreme heat, etc.

Know that rebuttals will be perpetually wrong. Because if I shout my point loud enough, I overrule any logic.
