Only issue I can see with that is, what happens if you're in a "spaced" compartment and the ship eats a missile right in the hole? will the missile go through the portal as well and detonate still? what happens if the ship is "killed" while you're in a spaced compartment?
Good idea, but implementing it would be a beeotch...

The portals would be the doors into other areas of the ship. Whenever a missile would go off, the computer would have to load whatever has been vented to space (that section) the only way to get through the portal would be to walk through the door into the blown-out section. If a missile hit a door (even an open one) it could blow up automatically so rather than damaging only the ship instance, it would detonate at the door, load that area, then calculate damage.
The processes for this could mostly be summed up in.
-missile flight
-ship movement
-calculating block damage at detonation point
-loading new compartment
-integrating new compartment onto server-side ship
Without particle effects, it won't take more power for the server than an average TnT cannon if you keep the number and size of compartments exposed, small. (I know that all of this depends on how you do this, but it would be a memory-efficient way to do ship damage for large ships)
If the ship is killed while you're in a spaced compartment, (if the ships detonate in a Star Trek-esque warp core breach) then chances are that you will be dead. If there is only a medium blast and you are outside far enough away, you could get blown off of the ship. In that case, you would wait until your O2 runs out, or there could be a suicide so you didn't have to wait 10-15 minutes to respawn.
Or you could aim in the general direction of the closest planet and hope that your O2 lasts long enough for you to reach any orbital structures there....
Hey Doc! nice to see ya. you still have those links to the Ships people did? ( Like the Aurora, Destiny, etc) 'Cause I've been playing around with a few Mods that might be interesting to use with FutureCraft it they work the way I want them to...
Comparison of pretty much every science-fiction space ship, including Stargate (the basis for this mod). This is to anyone who wants to build a ship for this mod.
I dont see any Star trek ships except a Starbase and (maybe) a Klingon ship.
(In evil Nazi like tone) We will use zhe rings. Look zhem up if you wish to vknow more about zhem.
Yeah I saw someone mentioning them...I just didn't know if anyone mentioned mechanics.
Has anyone mentioned anti-starship mines? If not...
-3 types
*High Explosive (made w/ TNT)
*Nuke (Made with Uranium)
*Pulse (Made with a tesla coil?)
-Mines can only be laid by smaller ships (fighters/bombers/transports - low tonnage ships) to prevent massive minefields.
-A limit between 3-10 nuclear mines per ship inventory. Nuke mines cannot be laid by craftable ships.
Hopefully I don't see a post about someone already thinking of this, then I'd feel stupid for the third time...
Edit: Also, any thoughts on how to combat hunger during long term space travel?

You Likely Saw ME mentioning the Rings. And yes, now that Hunger has been added in, I've thought about this. Its really simple, really.
Hydroponics.
You'd be using them anyway for Oxygen filtration and generation, so why not use the plants that are doing that for food as well?
Hmmmn. good idea, but you'd need some way of regulating how destructive they were, how often they would land, what effects (other than the obvious "Boom" effect a chunk of nickel iron entering the atmosphere at 30,000KPH would cause...) it would have...
Iridium. Hmmn. Iridium is used in alloys for things like Aircraft parts, so it would be useable for a spaceship. Thing is though, iridium is insanely rare naturally; Off the top of my head, I think there's only about 3 tons of it made a year, worldwide, so if FutureCraft were to incorporate it, it couldn't be as a "major" element used in spaceship construction... unless its made more common that it is IRL.

It could be made to be as rare as diamond or slightly less rare than diamond in the world gen. Though if the only use is going to be for aircraft parts and small things that, the crocite ore that Doc said from the short story. Though if included, then it COULD be put to use in components that would be difficult to make but well worth while.

Sir, you may be able to blow up the world twenty times over, but I... I know the physics to tear this universe apart in a heartbeat. I think I win this argument.

I was thinking more along the lines of better tier components; more durable hull plating for vulnerable areas of a ship, or something like that. Or, since its used in high heat, high corrosion areas, you could use it for Drop Pods and Lifepods.
God dammit! I have been waiting for this mod since the first time you posted it!!! When will it be ready! I'm starting to get impatient!
Well you may still be waiting for a while, as there are many parts to be coded and tested and if i were to guess at a time frame for the release of the mod, id say give it a few months or maybe even outwards to a year.

Suggestion: When you name your ship, should their be a sort of console interface that lets you put it on the side of the hull? I mean, you type in the name, select a color and an extra feature (such as a dragon) and it would appear on the side of your ship. I would name mine Polaris.

Seems easy enough to do; the dragon thing might need a additional mod (to add in custom Images) to work, but it wouldn't be that hard to do.

I just made Crocite up because I needed a name. I wasn't planning on doing anything with it.
I would use it, but I can't for some reason..

BTW, I'd name my ship "Pride of Ba'al"
