For a power source you could use some sort of nuclear fusion/fission generator, and for weapons I would use Magnetic Accelerator Weapons as they pack a huge punch and are a lot smaller then rail guns as well as more efficient. Also an interesting idea would be a "orbital" defense platform like in the Halo games those HUGE gun's that float in space. That's my five buck's on this subject.

Bet you thought I hid a penny in here didn't yah? Well you were wrong. Like my pyramid?
"I'd just like to point out that you were given every opportunity to succeed. There was even going to be a party for you. A big party that all your friends were invited to. I invited your best friend the Companion Cube. Of course, he couldn't come because you murdered him. All your other friends couldn't come either, because you don't have any other friends. Because of how unlikeable you are. It says so here in your personnel file: Unlikeable. Liked by no one. A bitter, unlikeable loner whose passing shall not be mourned. 'Shall not be mourned.' That's exactly what it says. Very formal, very official. It also says you were adopted. So that's funny, too." -GLaDOS

Haven't decided how much realism I'm going to shoot for in the portal system. It's going to depend a lot on how it's deployed, but by that point the project will have its own thread to discuss it in.
Technical bit: What you are seeing in the video is an entity that has assumed the pre-compiled render data of a 16x16x16 chunk of terrain, attached to an arrow (pitch and yaw were disabled because it looked too weird). Thousands of these world renderers are being drawn to the screen every frame, so you could add even a few hundred more without appreciable frame drop. For now they reflect chunks that exist in the real world, but later they will be from chunks in a zeppelin-like pocket dimension. The hard part comes after with the adjusted collision models in the next stage, but I've got it pretty much ironed out on paper.
Portals can be done surprisingly easy in this framework, by using custom entity rendering to act as a second camera viewpoint from some other location. This should be possible not just from point A to point B in the normal world, but to the nether or aether, or even other servers in SMP. That's a long way down on the roadmap, though.
(Note that he is refering to one of the first videos of this in this qoute.)
The system he is using is almost exactly what you want to use for starships, its perfect!

This is exactly what I am looking for. As a programmer and a fan of Minecraft I would love to see interplanetary travel.
I just recently found out I could recreate minecraft a lot easier then I anticipated. And I had already designed the Server integrations. The problem is, it would be like re-inventing the wheel just to make mc again. So I am hoping to see this "worked in to" mc someday.
I looked into it more, and Copernicus(the thing I posted about a few hours ago) is EXACTLY what this mod needs. The real ship can be placed literaly anywhere, like another dimension, and the fake ship replicates it visualy with perfect accuracy. Any change on the original is immediately(and i mean IMMEDIATELY, it updates in the same tick as the change) replicated visually on the fake ship.
The giant, 600k block ship you saw moving in the video I posted? It took about 250 WRs(World Renderers), minecraft has several thosand loaded in a normal world anyway, meaning that there is virtually no perfomance hit at all. The only things it doesn't match is particles and tile entitys, and he's working on those.
If you guys use this, then it basically eliminates half the work, the rest is just the the server-server commication for ship travel and the items/blocks themselves.
Hello there. I don't venture onto the Request Board too often, so this is my first time actually seeing this project. It looks...ambitious to say the least. However, if you are serious about making this happen, I would be more than happy to help out.
Besides the giant moving ships, I have some ideas on how you would approach the multi-world aspect and a few other things as well.

No problem, I like to help mods like this one out by alerting them of things that could make making the mod easier, like your Copernicus.
sounds awsome but almost impossble i really hope this works, you guys should do a pre-release even if its buggy and causes the game to crash all the time it would keep alot of us happy haveing proof that its actuly doing well.
spectrobes FTW

IT'S RIGHT HERE IN THIS PAGE
Last I heard it was only an idea.
It would go REALLY WELL with the Cubic chunks mod.
Are there people actually working on it / planning it out to become a mod? Just wondering.
This mod is loosely based on Stargate and he suggested things from Stargate, and all the things he suggested are futuristic.
They have already started modding it, I believe they are more then 50% done and testing it on a few servers.
I believe you can only get on the server if you are a builder and I think they may already have enough.
Why did you triple post? You could have just edited your old ones.
If I make a mistake on something, feel free to correct me. I'm always open to improvement.
Fr0stbyte124 has created exactly what you guys need: http://www.youtube.com/user/fr0stbyte124#p/u
Far more suited to what your trying to do in my opinion, heres his explanation of how it works:
