Ver.1) Dragons would be AWESOME. I think you could take the different types of dragons, and each would have preferences. (Red dragon prefers areas with lava or fire, green prefer grass and plants, blue-water, etc.
Also, certain types of dragons (the weaker ones) would allow you to saddle them wild, if you make them friendly towards you, whereas you'd have to grow your own dragon of the more powerful types.
Some dragons (Nether, Epic*, etc) could never be saddled, but non-nether dragons could still be befriended, and will come to your aid by use of a special item (Like a Whistle).
Ver.2) You could also make it so that wild dragons are HUGE, and if you manage to steal their eggs, you can grow domestic dragons, who would be much smaller (like, the size of a cow, or maybe somewhat bigger) and could fly, but not if they have a rider. The domestic dragons could hunt, attack and fly similarly to the wild dragons, and protect the player like a pet wolf does. If a domestic dragon wanders away, you can call it with i'ts special whistle (given to you by the dragon once fully grown) and if you die, the dragon will head off towards wherever you re-spawn at, or might appear in a puff of smoke/nether particles (depending on the type).
In both types, common dragon eggs would be hatched via furnace and a single lava bucket, and will take the entire amount of time to hatch. Epic* dragon eggs, golden dragon eggs, etc. would require a second bucket of lava. The dragon pup that hatches would (Ver.1) Be the size of a pig, or (Ver.2) be the size of a chicken.
Ver.1) The dragon pup is grown to the second stage via cooked meat (type of meat depends on dragon) and requires 5 pieces to grow to the second level, when it is half again as big as a cow (cannot be given all at once, two max per day). You must then give it a total of 5 uncooked meat pieces for 3 Minecraft days to reach third stage, when it is the size of your average tree's leaf spread (5 blocks long). It takes 10 more pieces each day for 3 days to reach full size, 10-20 blocks long, depending on the dragon.
Ver.2) The dragon pup takes 5 cooked Porkchops to reach half grown size, (the size of a cow) and then it will need only 10 more cooked Porkchops to get full-grown (twice the size of a cow).
Wild dragons will spawn at 15-20 block sizes, depending entirely on area and type. Wild EPIC dragons would be 30-40 blocks long, and generally uncaring about your existence (until provoked), and will be found in Dragon Halls, great castle-like structures generally found half-buried or completely buried in sand or dirt. Rarely found would be the castles big enough to be (on the surface) 50+ bricks tall, and underground, go to about 50 blocks above the bedrock level (minimum). If you befriend the EPIC dragon, every dragon in the castle will leave, giving you a huge house. You can then bring other dragons back into the castle, as the castle is now yours. Castle contents/design/size depends on the type of Epic dragon it spawned for (Red and Black dragons could have Nethery or Obsidian castles, Green could have mossy, etc.). You could include an option for how rare Dragon Halls are (which also increases/decreases the amount of Epic dragons to be found). Nether Dragon Halls would reach from the top down, as if hanging, or they could spawn completely unsupported, making them “float.” These castles would be even fancier than the earth ones, because they are for the Ultimate Dragons, the (insert awesomely epic name here, ex. Groganox, or something), which are instantly angry, and you must either bring loads and loads of meat and other gifts, or some diamond armor and a few swords, a bow and a TON of arrows, and TNT with some flint and steel, because they would be enormous dragons, say 40 blocks long, and have tons of health. If someone has built castles that they think would fit this description, POST A PICTURE OF YOUR AMZINGNESS!!!
That would add a lot to the game, don’t you think? (aside from the lines of code and data useage, that is)
* Epic dragons are some of the biggest things you could meet. They are more or less bigger versions of the other dragons, and can be friendly or deadly, depending on your actions toward the other dragons of said species. There are no epic Nether dragons, but there are Ultimate dragons, which are larger than the Epics, and they are automatically purely nasty. Befriending them is a long and costly process, not to mention a dangerous one. You’d have to give them tons of meat, gold, silver, and diamonds, and maybe a few milk buckets, just to de-agro them. It’d take at least a Minecraft week just to make it friendly, and a week more to make it your true friend.
Sidenote: Block sizes are probably a little exaggerated...
I have no preference as to European or Asian Dragons, by the way.
Comment with the word YES at the beginning if you want to hear Simon and Lewis reaction to a 50 block long Dragon!
This entire thing would work better as a mod than as an update, but if it were implemented over time into Minecraft, it'd be awesome!
This can also be found on the Get Satisfaction forum thing found in the community page on minecraft.net, under the name of "What Dragons ought to be. LENGTHY!" and was written by me, under the name of gameboxkid.
