I expect they are loads of threads like this, but hey maybe one day microsoft will actually pay attention to us. I've been playing mods on the (practicly) ancient 1.7.10 for a while now. And have noticed some really great 1.12 mods popping up (like quark and animania). I decided to upgrade (and convert my current mods or find alternatives).
When I play 1.7.10 I have 2GB allocated, and have 109 mods. This runs fine, and I can play and build quite happily.
Yet 1.12.2 (with optifine and betterfps on 2 render distance) I get 0fps using just 26 mods and I have 5GB 3GB allocated (My PC has 4GB) (note, my PC has 4GB, but I've added another 4 using my USB stick, look up adding RAM on Wikihow to see what I'm talking about) .
I already tried removing JEI/NEI but the FPS is still 0 (using the optional FPS counter added by optifine). As well as this it takes forever to laod.
Any ideas for fixing this? I can provide a mod list. And if not then should I just stay in 1.7.10? Is it the mod authours fualt? or minecrafts?
Minecraft hasn't added that much (compared to some mods) from 1.7.10 to 1.12.2 I don't understand what's going wrong.
I have 5GB allocated (note, my PC has 4GB, but I've added another 4 using my USB stick, look up adding RAM on Wikihow to see what I'm talking about) .
I don't need to check Wikihow to realize that this is a bad idea. This is virtual memory, and most USB sticks are not that fast - some might be faster than mechanical hard drives, but not all, and even those are significantly slower than proper RAM speeds, so this "extra" ram is probably what is sending your performance down the drain.
I suggest you switch back to allocating actual ram instead, and see how much you really need.
BTW, what's this about using fast craft in 1.12.2? That mod is only for 1.7.10.
I'd changed it to better FPS after I'd posted it (clearly didn't show the edit for you) sorry. In regards to that, I'll try, also just something I'm curious about, allocating 2.5GB causes an error, yet 3GB works, any idea why?. I'll try your suggestion, thanks, just as a note, it never actually seems to go to use the 5GB, using around 3.5GB (according to task manager) at most. At some point I might buy some RAM cards, but I don't have a spare £80-£150 right now. It's just frustrating... bleh. Thanks for the quick reply.
Nobody bring up the same point please.
Edit: having ran MC with USB out on 3GB it loaded but still at 0FPS *sigh* I guess it's 1.7.10 for me :(.
also just something I'm curious about, allocating 2.5GB causes an error, yet 3GB works, any idea why?
What argument are you using to allocate 2.5GB? -Xmx requires positive integer values, so "-Xmx2.5G" won't work, you'd need to change it to "-Xmx2500M" (or "-Xmx2560M" if you want to go by the power-of-2 definitions of megabyte and gigabyte)
Edit: also, if Quark and Animania interest you, you might not have to jump all the way to 1.12.2. There are 1.10.2 versions of those two mods, so you might see if you can get 1.10.2 working on your system.
Alright, that makes sense thank you, I wasn't aware using M worked. Is 1.10.2 any more stable then 1.12? And are they any downgrades (E.G: not as many features) when using older versions. Thank's for replying.

It's hard for me to tell how stable different versions of Minecraft are, since I have what you might call a very beefy PC (i7-4770k, 32 GB ram, gtx 1070, 500 GB ssd, 1440p monitor), which is less affected by stability issues, but as far as features you'd be missing out on, the version history entries in the Minecraft Wiki cover that. If there are any features that are important to you past 1.10.2, I can think of two things to do:
1. Look for mods for 1.10.2 to provide similar functionality.
2. Try your 1.12.2 mods one at a time to see which ones are hurting your frame rate and/or memory usage the worst (with only 26 mods this hopefully won't take horrendously long) and consider removing those.
Update: I've been playing in 1.10.2 myself with Animania, but I ran into a weird issue with sheep breeding (each ewe can only get pregnant once), and I'm having some trouble convincing the author of its existence. Looking with jd-gui, the 1.12 version of Animania seems like it will be better about this, so now I'm less confident about recommending 1.10.2.
I have 50+ GB Allocated and my game STILL crashes and Lags constantly, The issue was fixed for a while then i added a few mods which perminently caused the issues to come right back even after removing the said mods
Though i dont have optifine (Its incompatible sadly, Theres a few lag reduction mods i know of that are sadly incompatible with my modpacl)
50+ gb of ram and you're running into problems? What type of pc do you have that you have 50gb of ram to allocate to minecraft? I run into issues allocating anything over 8gb...freezing at top end and being unable to recovery. What mods are you running, how are you allocating 50gb of ram...how much total ram do you have, what's your processor? I have a modded version of ATM3 that I run semi-stable with 8gb of ram allocated (though that's pushing it at times). I have used just about every mod there is and I can usually get the typical enhancement mods to work with config file changes. Have you tried VanillaFix, FoamFix, BetterFPS, Phosphor, etc etc? Give us more information and maybe we can help.
This thread might be old and all but, to reduce lag, run at a lower resolution. It fixed my lag issue and Im running 139 mods. Specs ( core i5 7200U, Nvidia 940MX, 8gb ddr4 Ram)
Why in gods name do you need 50gb of RAM? The max you'd ever ever need is 12gb. Check your used memory at the top right when you use the function button to view your ram, coordinates, etc. If you're used ram is less than 80% then you're using too much. Dedicating too much ram can cause significant lag believe it or not.
I have a core i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30 GHz, I also have 8gb ddr3, I also also have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M, and when I get optifine in it I get 15 fps, I get 4 fps without optifine, I have very low render distance and still get HEEPS of lag in Minecraft 1.12.2, I only have optifine and clumps, and sometimes I use chunk animator, with all of them I get 20 fps, I have a laptop, no fans, Overheats alot, I'm gonna get some fans for it on my BDay.
