I'm interested in playing Thaumcraft for the first time and I've noticed that there are quite a few add-ons available for it; I'm interested in using some, but I'm specifically after stuff that doesn't supercede or render obsolete everything in Thaumcraft itself (some of the add-ons I've glanced at seem to have a bit of power creep occuring in them, things like wands and staves ten times as powerful as anything you encounter in the core mod, etc.). Anyone have any suggestions for Thaumcraft add-ons that don't overshadow Thaumcraft itself too heavily?
Thaumic Tinkerer is always a good bet, it adds some new wand foci enhancements to some thaumic devices and my favorite a precise way of enchanting with thaumic energies. Another good one to check is Forbidden Magic which is a compatibility mod for other magic mods like Ars Magica, Blood Magic, and Botania. It brings in new weapons and armor, wands that draw on energies from other mods (my favorite's the Living wood wand which draws on Botania Mana) and several interesting utilities.

Yeah, it does contain a lot of god items, but that is balanced out by the fact that to get just 1 ichor, which is used for most of the "god items", you have to kill the wither. And the more powerful versions of the tools, the Awakened Ichorim things, are even harder to get. Also, you must complete all other research to unlock the research for the god items.
If i had to make suggestions for addons, i would say:
Thaumic tinkerer, because the early game stuff is not op and very useful,
Forbidden Magic, because it adds a lot of nether stuff giving it more use,
Thaumic bases, which adds in many different items, weapons, and magic things, such as the overenchanter, which lets you get enchantment levels higher than normal.
If you are interested in redstone then i would recommend Automagy, which adds many different ways to incorporate Thaumcraft with redstone.
Thaumic exploration is a good one, as it is well balanced, and easy to use.
Thaumic Warden is a relatively small mod, but adds in two foci and a set of armor and sword that can be upgraded through essentia.
Tainted Magic is good, as it is absolutely massive, almost bigger than the core mod. It adds many different things, such a 7 new foci, a thaumimum fortress blade, and fortress armor for void and shadow metals (shadow metal is added by this mod). Warning, the end game items are op, but hard to get.
Finally,Thaumic Horizons is an amazing mod, that adds in 5 foci, the ability to come back to life without losing xp, a way to augment yourself, such as making you faster, or stronger, and augment animals, such as turning a cow into a chocolate cow, or a pig into a taint feeder, with literally feeds off of taint, which is amazing for magic gone wrong. Also you can instill loyalty, such as making a creeper into your pet.
*note, if you make a creeper your pet, it wont explode*
Just in case you are wondering how i know all this, I have a modpack centered around thaumcraft, which contains all of these addons and more. Just ask and i will post it here for your use.
By the way, all the mods listed here work together and should not crash the game running together.

Am I wrong, or does Thaumic Tinkerer contain a lot of god items?
