Hey all—I've finally decided to branch out from vanilla after about a year of playing. Decided to try Industrial Craft first.After about 6 billion hours of failed attempts at installing the mod, I think I finally got it. Here's my steps:
1. Open Minecraft launcher (1.3.10)
2. Make a new profile called "1.6.4 Vanilla."
3. Hit "Play" using that 1.6.4 profile, close Minecraft and Minecraft launcher.
4. Use the Forge installer (9.11.1.965).
5. Forge reports that it successfully installed and grabbed 2 libraries.
6. Open Minecraft launcher again.
7. Hit "Play" using the "Forge" profile that was created at installation, close Minecraft and launcher.
8. Drop Industrial Craft .jar into the mods folder under /Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods. (Tried many different builds from this page, making sure they were all intended for 1.6.4, all with the same result).
9. Open Minecraft launcher, hit "Play" using the Forge profile. Forge reports that it has 4 mods loaded and running, one of which is Industrial Craft.
10. Start new world. Do all normal stuff like punching trees and hating wooden tools.
11. Reach the point where I finally have enough iron to make an iron furnace.
12. Attempt both crafting recipes to make an iron furnace... without anything showing up in the box where you get your finished product out of the crafting table. It just stays blank, as if I'm not using a real recipe.
13. I've also noticed that I cannot smelt iron ingots into refined iron. Placing the coal and ingots in the furnace doesn't activate the furnace or do anything. Interestingly enough, when I first smelted iron ore into regular iron ingots, I got the achievement "Not really better than regular iron" or something like that; I got the impression that acheivement was supposed to happen upon the first creation of refined iron?
After I tried multiple builds (3 or 4 different ones) for 1.6.4 Minecraft, I decided to attempt 1.7.2 builds. So I repeated the entire process using Forge for 1.7.2, and IC^2 builds designed for MC 1.7. No matter what I do, I cannot get the crafting recipes for iron furnaces to work, or smelt iron ingots. I imagine that's not the only thing that isn't working, I just can't get any further than that.
I've tried searching the forum AND Google, and it seems like nobody else has encountered this problem... :S
Here are a few screenshots that show the current version of Forge I am using, as well as the build of IC^2 (at the time of posting, this build is like 7 hours old). The last one shows what happens when I try to build an iron furnace.
Does anyone have a solution here?
Edit: I should note that much of the mod seems to be functioning correctly: I find copper, tin, lead, uranium and I'm able to smelt ingots of them just fine, I get see rubber trees, craft tree taps, etc. etc.
I have a 1.7.2 server with buildcraft and IC2 installed and while some things seem to be working (I have rubber trees and was able to build tree taps and get sticky resin and create rubber).
I am unable to build an iron furnace with EITHER the 8 piece Iron Recepie OR the 5 Piece + Stone Furnace recepie.
Unsure as to the cause but thought I would take a look here before bugging the devs...
Looks like a potential bug through so if you want to report it to IC2 I shall not
I should mention mine isn't on a server. All single player only.
The weird thing to me is that the problem was exactly the same through at least 4 different builds, in different versions, and actually also on two different computers.
The correct recepie is as follows according to the wiki
E = Empty
I = Iron
F = Furnace
E I E
I E I
I F I
This is the first one I tried... No luck.
This is correct but in the experimental version the iron ingots have been replaced by iron plates, which you make by using a Forge Hammer on an iron ingot in a crafting table. The Forge Hammer is made like this:
I I E
I S S
I I E
I = Iron ingot
S = Stick
E = empty
I suggest installing Not Enough Items to check for the recipes.

My bad, I saw they had some of the new recipes, but they don't have the new plates. Can't find a wiki that has everything, so I highly recommend just using NEI or the like.
Basically you need iron plates wherever you used to use refined iron. Wires are made by wire cutting plates. You can craft a forge hammer to make plates and wire cutters to cut wires and should definitely try to make the metal former machine if you want to save on consumable tools. UU matter is completely different, quantum bodyarmor includes a jetpack now, the red energy crystals cost more diamonds, the power net doesn't work right, processed uranium will kill you if you're not wearing a full hazmat suit, radioisotope generators are fun, don't expect your nuclear setup to work the same, and there's probably a lot more I can't remember that's dramatically different about it.
Heh. So I'm playing the wrong mod. I think I would prefer to just go with regular IC^2 rather than experimental... is there a version compatible with 1.7.2? If not, does anyone know which build works best with 1.6.4, and where to download it from?

The old IC2 is available here: http://ic2api.player.to:8080/job/IC2_lf/
But it hasn't really had any changes since June of 2013, build 401 being the last recommended. So there's no 1.7 version at all. It is effectively abandoned. Experimental is where all the new stuff is being done. If you're using additional mods that claim to support IC2, use comparatively older versions as they probably mean IC2-Experimental.

Checking that recepie now
Yup - Changing the ingots to plates seemed to do the trick
The wiki doesn't seem to show that difference, how can i check that easily in the future ?

Build a 1.6.4 build with NEI and screenshot all the recipes.
Then post it to a wiki because nobody has >.>
