I can't seem to install forge for Minecraft 1.6.4/1.7.2. Everytime I download it saves as a notepad file. And when I open with Java Runtime SE Binary, it quickly flashes an error. I'm running the most current Java JRE/ Java 7 update, but this doesn't seem to help. Is there anyway to work around this? Or to install mods without forge?
Write this in notepad:
java -Xms1024M -Xmx1024M -jar (jarname).jar
PAUSE
Replace the (jarname) with the name of the jar. Save it as a .bat on the desktop where the installer is and report back if it works.
Download the latest Forge Installer, right click it then chooses open with then select Java(TM)Platform. If that didn't work then you might have installed the wrong java platform.Try downloading the latest java platform from their website.Glad to be helping.Good luck!

I think I have the most recent java 7 platform. Its update 45 and 64-bit. It was the most recent I could find on the oracle webpage. It still shows an error though.
Ok, nvm. Thanks for your guys' help for those that posted. I was apparently had the right Java, but wasn't selecting it correctly.
This is the website I've been using, and I do the most recent/recommended one. But it still downloads as a Notepad file.
