I'm really confused. I've spent a few hours researching how to mod in Minecraft 1.6 and up, and have gotten really mixed answers. Some say you have to use Forge, some say you don't. What is Forge anyways? Some say to use Magic Launcher, some don't, I want to learn how to use it because it seems like it simplifies things. Some say you need to make a copy of your folder in your "versions" folder or something of the sort. I'm just really confused.
I have Forge and Magic Launcher installed currently and I want to learn how to install mods with them. I've downloaded ModLoader for 1.6.4 and have "added" the .zip file to my Magic Launcher Mod list, not external, just mod list, the top list in the "setup." It says ModLoader is not compatible. I downloaded the .zip file from here: http://www.6minecraft.net/risugami-modloader/
Do I have to download it from somewhere else? I've been told you need to "add" ModLoader first for any other mod to work. I would currently agree with this because when I add TooManyItems to the list it says "no ModLoader." This is true even when ModLoader is added or not.
I would really like to get a final answer how to install mods with Magic Launcher and Forge, I'm getting really frustrated with this and am questioning why Mojang changed this. I'm sure there's a logical/program coding reason for this so I'll stay patient. Thanks for all responses in advance.
In order to install forge. You need to download the forge installer. When you install it right click and open run with. Then run it with java. It will make a page and click client, then click install. Then all you need to do is open your .minecraft in your %appdata% and find mods. Copy and paste the .zip or .rar file you have for the mod you downloaded. Hope this helps you.

I think the confusing part about this is people think you still need winzip or winrar in order to get the mods to work, but that isn't necessarily true. I know because I was stuck on this notion. I just simply downloaded the file straight to my desktop and then copy and pasted it into my mod file. It is really as simple as that you no longer need to open with winrar and winzip (i believe based on mods I have) I have 1.6.4 launcher and forge installer. So I would try that. If you would like for me to walk you through it let me know. I was a total noob at this until 2 days ago when i figured out what was wrong. Winzip and winrar actually kept my mods from working
