This Post was originally by me posing the question - now I seem to have found a solution and have made a video tutorial - see below
This tutorial shows how to have multiple versions of minecraft (vanilla and with forge) along with multiple versions of mods - all in one launcher - here I'm using magic launcher 1.1.7.
{Prior to the new launcher, I basically had multiple installations of minecraft for each mod I used to prevent incompatibility issues.
With the new launcher, I have watched a few youtube videos on how to install mods which I followed.
What I can't find is someone describing installing multiple mods for multiple versions with the new launcher.
What I would picture is that within the .minecraft\versions folder, there would (hypothetically) be a folder for each mod - that could then be chosen via the dropdown of the launcher.
Follow this steps carefully.
1.delete and reinstall your minecraft
2.download minecraft forge installer the latest version and open it!
3.click install then ok.
4.open your minecraft, open profiles and select forge.
5.click save and play!:)
Some mods are incompatible with Forge or other mods. Forge isn't the be-all, end-all of modding, no matter what certain people would like other people to think.
It should be easy enough to do, I think Xisumavoid has a few videos up explaining this, look him up on Youtube. But, the TL:DR of it would be, make a copy of the folder that contains the version of Minecraft you want to mod, then mod it. Open the launcher, create a new profile that points to that folder.
And, Magic Launcher is also a viable alternative, as you can create profiles in it that point to different versions of the game with different mods loaded.

I guess the only thing I can't quite figure out is that if the mod requires forge, in the past you put the mod in the mod folder (in lieu of adding the content to the minecraft.jar file). I will look up Xisumavoid is see if there is a direct answer. If there is, I will attempt to write up a good "how to."

Yes, Forge is a bit weird, as it uses the main mods folder under the .minecraft folder. So, having multiple installs with forge is a bit tricky. Modloader, though, uses the mods folder that is under the versions folder of the version you're modding, so you can have multiple versions with different mods installed easily using the default Mojang launcher.
The only way I know of to get multiple versions of forge mods is to use a mod manager like magic launcher. I guess there are others, but I've never used them, magic launcher works for me. Otherwise, you'll have to manually swap mod files around when using forge. They should really get with the program and use the mods folder in the versions folder like modloader does.

Thank you! That is the answer I'm looking for. Yes, I agree - forge is a little funky. Basically the way I've handled it for now is I have separate instances of minecraft installed in an individual folder for each mod. Then, there is a shortcut I create that points to the launcher within that folder. That way, I have mods going back to 1.4.7
I will try magic launcher and see how that goes. Every tutorial out there talks about mods that are applied directly into the minecraft.jar, but, seems to me, 90% of the mods out there are forget compatible or required. I mean look at all these: http://modlist.mcf.li/list/1.6/1.6.2.php
Seems like there has to be a way - but maybe that way is this magic launcher. Quite a varied response to this thread I've started.

Though I haven't tried this, with Magic Launcher, you can create a profile, and point it to the forge install you already have. Then it will read all the mods in the .minecraft/mods folder and give you a list of them in the bottom part of the window. I *think* you can create a duplicate of that profile, and then uncheck the mods you don't want to run in that instance of Minecraft. Then you can create another profile with another set. Pretty sure it will work that way, experiment, worst you can do is crash Minecraft a bit.

Hey don't know if you guys still need help but I found a easy way. WITHOUT Magic Launcher.
Step 1 : Make a new folder on your desktop.
Step 2 : Create a new profile on the Minecraft launcher.
Step 3 : Change the directory and setup everything you need.
Step 4 : Launch Minecraft once. (So all the files will generate)
Step 5 : Close Minecraft and go to the folder. (You will see all the files are generated)
Step 6 : Install the mods!
Hope this helped!

crazyjoedavola I joined the forum just so I could say thanks for your hard work.
I too have a young 8 year old who wants all the mods to play with minecraft so you have saved me lots of time and headaches with your already done versions, many thanks!

Magic Launcher sucks and stop advertising your post.
