I've been a Minecraft user since very early on, and I must say that one of my favorite aspects about Minecraft is the wide diversity of mods that are available for download. Just about anything that a person could want as an addition to their game is available somewhere, on some website.
However, I have noticed something that's not so wonderful about these mods. Many of them are, obviously, of less-than-par quality. That's not the issue. The issue actually lies in the more amazing mods. Sometimes I'll stumble upon some video of some mod that really makes my jaw drop. However, when I go to download it, I find that the mod has become an overcomplicated, pretentious, and generally mind-boggling piece of crap.
Look, I'm not making this topic to complain and tell people how to make their mods. By all means, they're your mods, you make them the way you want to. I have no control over that. However, when a person's mod becomes popular, it's easy to see what happens. People begin to praise it, and the creator's head begins to inflate. They feel that the mod needs a load of new things that make it far too complex, incompatible with other mods, and overloaded. Just as well, I've noticed that the more popular a mod becomes, the more the creator turns into a jerk. They go from helpful members to members that say things such as "if you don't get this, you're retarded" or something along those lines. I fully understand that you can't answer to all of the questions that you're receiving, but I do feel that you should have a certain amount of respect for your less-capable fans.
They are still your fans.
Anyway, case in short, many mods become far too complicated, and, as such, lose a lot of their initial spark. If your mod is meant to add, let's say, a gun, or several, or a plane, or a car, or some other thing (that many people wouldn't want in vanilla), try to keep it at that. If your mod adds a gun, don't start adding millions of guns that do the same thing. Don't start adding "gun blocks" or something (not that I've ever seen this before).
I'm not saying that you shouldn't expand your mod, but I am saying that you shouldn't overcomplicate it. There does come a time when you should stop adding new stuff and should just start improving the old stuff, or merely making sure that it stays updated for the new versions of Minecraft. When you notice a lot of members asking for something new, then you should start considering it.
That's just my two cents. Many a mod have been ruined by this sudden addition of hundreds of unnecessary things.
PRIME example of this is Mo' Creatures!!! im gonna get hate, but that mod is really complex and keeps getting stuff added to it! i woulda just left it at like adding 4 or 5 new mobs to the game, but now its like 20 or something crazy. no hate on the creator, i just wish things didnt get so complicated

That's because my mod hasn't been released yet.
My mod will aim to make all resources obtainable in survival (except the enderdragon egg) renewable, while maintaining challenge. The only times I will update that mod will be:
1. If Minecraft updates.
2. If someone suggests a better way to make something renewable.
3. If Minecraft changes something that affects my methods of making stuff renewable.
This sounds like the kind of mod that would stay good, right? Too bad I'm having trouble with gui, though.

getting more monsters for mo creatures doesn't make it more complex, more complex would be to start adding hybrid breeding, dozens of new craftable items just for the mobs, etc.
When I say that something becomes more complex, I'm referring to things such as nested crafting. You know, when you need to craft several things and then merge them all into one super-specific item?
A good example would be the Laser Mod. It started with three simple lasers that were impressive and easy to understand. It now has one laser, many lenses, a new crafting table, dozens of combinations to get what you need, etc.
If anything, modders should make simple and complex versions of their mods. That would please all parties.
This should be posted in Modding Discussions as it's a discussion about..well, mods, but regardless, I'll say my point:
Now, I'm the kind of player that prefers vanilla MC as to having a crazy amount of mods installed..in fact, the only mod I have installed is TMI lol.
One of the main reasons why I was originally drawn to MC is because of how easy it is to produce and install mods for it and the diverse selection of mods from the community made even greater by server plug-ins!
But if I hear from a user that mods nowadays have been getting duller with each passing day, and how now they're a PITA to install, I'll have to agree because I know that the OP knows a lot more than I do with this subject.
Hopefully with the mod API, things will be easier..I hope so for the sake of users like me, who would like to get into mods, but can't be bothered with opening up the .jar, etc. etc.

At least I can say I don't do that. I have this nasty habit of just not adding things or updating once it becomes popular...
Maybe I'm a hipster deep down, Idunno.
Actually, that's a very good point as well, Nigel. Mods have become a huge pain to install. Mind you, this isn't the modders' faults. To install most mods now, you need Modloader and Forge. Some need ModloaderMP or something. It's getting insane!
I can't wait until installing mods becomes easier.
