I'm very good at java, but even the minecraft source code confuses me. This is because there are so many classes and so many methods to look at that I don't know which does what, and where this is called, and whether that class could be the source of my problems or not. I recommend taking classes in java. In my high school, I took a class for one semester last year, and I'm taking a class (AP Comp Sci A) this year for the full year. Before modding minecraft, I recommend making your own programs, preferrably a game (this is what made me one of the top of my class). It will help you a lot to understand how java works. Or, if your school doesn't offer classes (I actually had no choice but to take it, but I'm glad I took it), read a book like everyone else says.
