I've deleted my bin multiple times and redownloaded it. I've even go so far as to redownload the game, but everytime I unarchive the minecraft.jar (mac) I cannot seem to find the META-INF folder. I only see this as a problem because all of the mod installation tutorials involve deleting the folder. At first I thought this was not a problem, but I cannot seem to get any mod to work now. Any advice would be appreciated.
instead of META-INF on Mac it is Mojang*.... I think ( because someone on youtube said so on a tutorial on how to install a mod (when i first started playing Minecraft ) and he said that instead of META-INF its Mojang*.
Macs don't have Control f for searching stuff. They have the search bar. all you need to do is goto your Minecraft.jar. open it, click the background and type meta. then you should find it. If that does not work, add a new folder called Meta-Inf and replace the old one. (The new Meta-inf folder should have nothing on it should you don't even need to delete it.)

Actually, Robbo905, when you create a .JAR using Eclipse(Or other programs) it automatically creates the Meta-inf file. It holds the info on what .CLASS should be there, and what shouldn't.
Also, the META-INF folder should be will be emptied when you mod. On mac, you don't delete the folder itself, just the contents.

It does not matter if you delete just the inside, or the whole thing. Macs are not different to PCs much when it comes to the .Minecraft folder and all of it's integrity.
Lol sorry. I'm just confused because I followed a tutorial step by step (with the exception of the META-INF deleting process) for downloading Equivalent Exchange and it did not work (I black screened). I'm just very confused.
I could not find META-INF either. It just was not there. I ended up following this youtube video:
Basically, rename minecraft.jar (I backed up my entire folder first, just in case something didn't work) as minecraft.jar.zip, then say, "use .zip," when it asks. Double click the file to create a foldered version of minecraft.jar and start putting your files in. There is a META-INF file that appears (and eventually seems to disappear of its own accord), but I was able to add mods without touching it. I do have a mod that worked fine on a clean install of minecraft, but doesn't want to work in my old install, so definitely test one at a time.
I hope this helps. :smile.gif:
EDIT: I want to point out (in case it gets missed) that you will no longer have the regular minecraft.jar file using this method, so if you try to update, you will probably get complaints about the file missing or something. Make sure you back it up. I'm still trying to figure out how to get my mods to work without using this method, but for now, it works.
Actually, I think I just found the real problem. Go to the minecraft.jar, and search for :MANIFEST.MF And DELETE THAT SHIET. As you look to the side, it says meta-inf. it has a new name now.
Your welcome.

There is a reason the folder exists. But the reason is sorta stupid. I mean download the dumb client and just update it. The reason is Java needs check-sums to make sure the Minecraft applet is generally safe . But Java does want to make sure you don't get a virus from the applet. Try finding a program that uninstalls MC for you or just delete the whole .minecraft folder
found. JUST KIDDING

How are you unarchiving it? Do you follow Risugami's instructions in his ModLoader thread? Whenever I do it on my Mac (on Linux right now), the META-INF folder always shows up for me.

I don't know about you, but I notice a difference between deleting the contents of the folder and deleting the folder itself; the difference, of course, being that Minecraft gives you a nice black screen after you log in when you delete it entirely.
What I found to work on Macs is exactly what he said; instead of deleting the folder, you have to delete the contents of the folder, discluding MANIFEST.MF, which seems to be what keeps Minecraft from black screening. It's the same way with Linux, as well.
/facepalm
Minecraft.jar is IN the bloody .minecraft folder.
AND you don't have to bump old threads.
I've dealt with mods and stuff before, but I don't have that folder in my .minecraftNvm found the Meta-inf, it was hidden in a compressed version of minecraft_1.2.5
This. I dont know for the life of me why notch added that stupid folder anyway.
The META-INF folder is a Java file that is required for the Java platform to execute the jar file. It contains a list of all of the class files in the jar and a SHA1 digests for the file, which basically prevents injection of malicious code to the classes because it would know if a file changed. Notch didn't enable it or add it or anything, it's a core component of Java.

You're probably doing something else wrong if your mods aren't working

I know this because I am on a mac myself.
That is not true. Macs have Meta-Inf.

You have a minecraft.jar file located at C:\Users\YOURUSER\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\bin\minecraft.jar
The file you are talking about is only the file that starts the minecraft.jar in your .minecraft folder.
but even after deleting that, my minecraft still crashes...
(i have a mac and are trying to get forge)
