Now I'm sure you're familiar with modpacks? You've proboably heard of YogBox, the NOW pack, the Amazo pack, etc etc. What makes these modpacks special? Well, they followed a set of rules. I am going to share these rules with you here but first you must remember, not following these rules can very well break copyrights, a large majority have copyright footnotes at the bottom of their posts such as:
Or any other variation, more information about minecraft copyrights can be found here.
What is a modpack?
A modpack is a compilation (collection) of multiple mods that can work together without many if any conflicts.
Why would I use a modpack?
The purpose of a modpack is to put a large collection of mods in a single download to save you time and effort.
I want to make a modpack what should I do?
That's why you're here isn't it? Just keep reading!
HOW TO MAKE A MODPACK
CHOOSE THE MODS
This really explains its self. Find a few mods that you like and think go together nicely
TIP: Make sure the mods are modloader required (DON'T ACTUALLY ADD MODLOADER TO YOUR PACK!! (unless you have permission))
TEST THE COMPATIBILITY
Download all of the mods and install them. Open up minecraft.
If you get a black screen:
Close minecraft and open your .minecraft folder. There should be a text file called ModLoader.txt, Open it.
Scroll down to the part where it has the errors. Chances are two or more of the mods are conflicting. Generally it's an item/block id confliction. It will tell you which mods are conflicting, remove one from your pack.
If you really wanted to you could use MCP and decompile the mods and fix the id conflictions (this would allow your modpack to hold more mods) But make sure you have permission to alter to files.
If you don't get a black screen:
Continue to the next step
PREPARING TO RELEASE
Now that everything is working properly with each other, you need to zip the files together. Before you do that you need to make sure you've done a few things.
DOWNLOAD WINRAR OR WINACE OR 7ZIP OR A VARIATION OF!
- Create a new folder called something like "Super awesome modpack of doom" (no don't use that because you would be stealing from me :tongue.gif: )
- Pretend that the "Super awesome modpack of doom" folder is minecraft.jar and move all of the files into it like you would install a mod into the jar file
-Select all of the files (ctrl + A on windows) and rightclick one of them, and click "add to archive..."
-Name it what you named your folder if it isn't already named that, select zip file and click ok.
GET PERMISSION!!
I can not stress this enough. You do NOT have any right WHATSOEVER to distribute a mod without the original authors permission! Unless they state otherwise in their forum post, it would say something like:
Feel free to use my mods in a modpack but please be sure to give me credit! :biggrin.gif:
Or other variations thereof.
GIVE CREDIT!!
Once you HAVE permission you NEED NEEEED to give the authors credit! There are several ways to go about this:
- Create a .txt file in the download that has each mod next to the author - In the forum post CLEARLY state which mod belongs to who in a list (like this) - Put the list in a visable location!
PROVE THAT YOU HAVE PERMISSION!!
Just giving credit or SAYING that you have permission is NOT enough. You should ALWAYS provide PROOF that you have permission. There are a couple ways to do this as well.
-Screenshot the conversation(s) -Provide a link to a forum post where the author gave permission
RELEASE!
- Upload Super awesome modpack of doom.zip to a website like mediafire or dropbox
- Get the public link for the download
- DO NOT USE ADF.LY These are NOT your mods to be making money off of, only the authors are allowed to use adf.ly
- Put the link on your forum post
MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THESE STEPS, ESPECIALLY THE ONES ABOUT GETTING PERMISSION!!!

Thank you very much for compiling this! It's a very good guide for the beginners out there.
Thank you :happy.gif: I feel bad for people who have made modpacks only to be hated on for not getting permission, usually they just don't know better.
THIS DID NOT HELP ME ONE BIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :angry.gif: YOU ARE ONLY GAVE US TIPS AND THIS TIPS DID NOT HELP ME!!!!!!!!!! :angry.gif: :angry.gif: :angry.gif: :angry.gif: :angry.gif: :angry.gif: :angry.gif: :angry.gif:
if you are just gonna use the modpack for personal use, do you still have to get permission?
and how do you make a settings.txt. like with the zombe-modpack?
as long as you don't publish it, you can put ANY mod in your modpack
interesting .3.
But what if you're just making a modpack for yourself? Er.. Since it takes a lot of time for me to actually put all of the mods I want in, can I just make one for my own use? Because, well, I know I didn't make the mods :V
edit: oh okay WOOO (i didn't see the above post :V)
I find this to just skim the surface but the big point here is ask permission. I run a small tekkit server and when mods got removed from it due to the mod author finding out it really hurt my server. The modpacks are super useful because a very small percentage of minecraft players know how to do anything complex with a computer like copying files. Beleive or not but this forum is probably not representive of the majority of minecraft users. I for one love to see those users experience modded minecraft multi player. It benifits the mod creator and it benifits the lower skilled users. It also benifits the server admin when they have options.

You'd need added permission for the settings.txt. You'd have to edit the original mod files to add in the methods, then add a class to create the file and update it on every load of minecraft.
That's not as easy as saying zip the folder. In order to make a launcher, I suggest learning Java and maybe decompiling some others for personal use. If you decompile someone else's launcher, do not re-distribute it. Okay?
Also, to original poster:
First, not a fan of the centered text, but ehh, whatever. And second, this needs to be stickied!
