Currently, I'm working on my first mob: a Para-Beetle! Now a Para-Buzzy!
For those new and wondering about the process to get started, I used this tutorial for my first mob. Make sure to do both of the parts in this post to make your mod ModLoader v5 compatible and use Spawnlist.
I'm in the process of getting used to using MCP, with ModLoader and Spawnlist support for maximum compatibility. I also use Mob Maker since I have no idea how to model (If anyone knows of a good modeling tutorial, please let me know)(Techne was of much help in this area). And this is what I've come up with so far:
Isn't he a cute lil' chubby bugger!?
I've pretty much completed the model though I'd like to find out how to have constantly-flapping wings, even when still. Did the texture myself, which I'm pretty proud of. Now!.. I must move on to the AI. The scary part. I'd like to have him as a flying mob, near the clouds. I imagine it to be non-hostile until provoked, then it picks you up and drops you! Help on this area is, of course, very much appreciated.
I'll post my issues/questions later as I come up with them. Hopefully, with all of your help, I'll one day be a full fledged modder with plenty of stuff to share with you guys.

Mr. okushama - Helped me with MCP and crap. All around nice, cool guy. DrZhark - Helped me finally solve my texture problem. ZeuX - Made a great program called Techne. All around nice, cool guy as well. miztakay - For the Human Mob tutorial! birjolaxew - For his Absolute Beginner modding tutorials. It's where I started from the very beginning and got a basic understanding of how to mod!
Can I ask, what is it going to do when you finish it :smile.gif:?
I'm hoping for it to be a sky mob. Flying at higher elevations near the clouds. I was thinking to make them somewhat playful, maybe pushing you off cliffs? Who knows. Maybe even mountable, though they are a bit small for that.
So any pros at modeling around? I'd really like help with those wings.
I want them similar to chicken's feet, in that they are flat and support transparency.
Well, I figured out how to do 2D texturing. I'll post it for anyone wondering.
You basically have to make object, such as a wing, 3D but only texture the side you want to be visible and 2D. This prevents the weird sketchy thing going on with only making a flat object, it seems. The chicken's feet up above is a good example. You can almost imagine its feet being on an invisible rectangle, with the leg being on side and the feet being on the bottom of the object.
Want me to make a texture? (then ill need a testverson of the mod)
Currently, I can't even create a default texture.
I'm trying to use a 128x64 skin, but it's kind of funky. It looks like I have to set the dimensions on the entity at half? The resolution of the mob seems doubled when using a texture higher than 64x32. The problem I'm having is setting coordinates. I tried asking for help on the modding IRC channel, but I guess those higher up modders only speak with others in their clique..
If anyone knows how I go about this, preferably without using the TurboThingy mod, I'd appreciate the help.

I can also make mob textures, so if you by any chance want to have a texture for it, just contact either QLight or me!
I don't believe you read the whole post, my good sir.
I can't even create a template skin currently. Because of all the shapes on the ParaBeetle, it will require a 128x64 texture. It's not easy applying this size of texture due to the aforementioned circumstances. It would seem I have to halve the dimensions, line up the skin texture for a template (which is hard itself. A coordinate of (24,0) for the head does not necessarily start the head texture at that exact point, for some crazy reason.), then scale up the whole thing to make the ParaBeetle the size I was aiming for.
Once I figure this out or, if the heavens are gracious, get some help, only then will I be able to allow others to work with a template texture on the model-ready ParaBeetle.
I've changed it to be a Para-Buzzy now, just for the hell of it. :smile.gif:
For the most part, I've got the model done. My only concerns about it are:
[*:yk3cngqx]It's drawn too high off the ground. (I'm pretty sure this isn't due to positioning in the model since those values are rather small) Solved these two with help from Mr. okushama! Didn't think it'd be as simple as just setting its position inside of the hitbox.. Figured I was doing something specifically wrong..
[*:yk3cngqx]It's hitbox is actually underneath it, not on it itself. (This also contributes to the above statement.)
[*:yk3cngqx]I'd like for its wings to always be flapping, even when standing still.
[*:yk3cngqx]I'd like to make a bobbing up and down motion as it walks.
[*:yk3cngqx]I'd like to to figure out how to have something tilted by default (I.E. a leg) but able to rotate as well for movement.
[*:yk3cngqx]How the hell do I use a 128x64 texture!?
Help on these issues would be greatly appreciated. :smile.gif:
Aww! Looks so cute! iPodmail sent me here. If you don't know him check out his videos. He's got alot of modding videos and his latest is the Para-Buzzy mod!

Really nice mod, good work. I'd be happy to help you out if you need any other help.
May I suggest goombas, koopas, and possibly regular beetles as part of a separate pack?
Oh, and little lava fireballs that jump out of lava!
I can't wait to download, but please make them rarer in the final release.
Anyone else have this problem? Or, could anyone confirm finding one?
