I came up with an idea last night and wanted to add Medicine to Minecraft. Originally I was just gonna do it for myself, but I thought other people might like it so I wanted to make it a bit more complex then just adding medicine to the game and thought I'd add roots to trees. The roots would then be ground up with a Mortar and Pestle (Which I'll add to the game) and can be used with water to create Pastes to heal you.
I'd like to add the fact that I have never developed a mod or anything like this before (My dad's gonna teach me development and such, and I thought this would be a great project to work together on.) so it'll be awhile before it's done. That is, if I can actually do it properly.
If people generally like it, I'll post more information and pictures and such.
Since people are showing a bit of interest, here's some more details about it.
I'll be working on this in small steps, slowly working my way up to a version that I feel is good enough to release. What I need for it to get to that point is as follows...
Actual Root Block
Roots spawn only right next to trees
Roots change direction they're facing and snap so one end is actually touching the tree
Roots can be ground up
Powders can be made into Pastes
Once those 5 things are done, I'll consider it ready for release. At one point I hope to achieve all of this...

Potions added for Flowers
A Cauldron to make Pastes and Potions
Roots given the ability to "Grow" if left unharvested

i like this idea, if you could (or someone) to add more plants to the game that could be used to make medicine in minecraft :tongue.gif:
If you do make the medicines out of regular flowers, I think it would be good to add something to allow growing more flowers.
I hate to venture million miles away from my crafting station just to find a stupid flower for some disease or curse that Notch will eventually come up with.

Yeh good point, that would get quite annoying. Good idea though!
Well right now the idea isn't going to focus on realism. I want to get the roots done ASAP and actually into the game WORKING before I turn them into powders. If it takes awhile I may work on the plants, but it'll just be like "OK, here's a blue plant, a purple plant, and a white plant. Grind them up, add some water, and the paste will heal 4 hearts."
Of course, that'll change drastically to make more pastes and such but I want to get the idea IMPLEMENTED and working before I make it realistic.
But as for the different roots, that idea is already firmly implanted in my mind and will be done a certain way. Which I can't really discuss, because that ruins the whole idea.
Basically the idea came to me because I was thinking "OK, I just got shot in the face with an arrow, and a spider just tried to eat my leg. I'll just eat some Pork and feel right as rain!" and that just didn't make any sense to me >.>

I did already think about how things like Pork and such are really easy to come by, and that's where my idea I mentioned before comes in. So I can't get into the specifics but there will be some randomness in the roots, which can give you minor healing, great healing, healing with bonuses (Hopefully) or even damaging you.
Yeah that makes a lot more sense then using food to actually heal yourself, but I'd have to make a Stamina system. I could probably do it at one point, but I don't know if I'd actually even use it myself >.>
Either way, I updated the Original Post since there's a bit of interest in it.
I know I shouldn't bump but there's really no support on this for the most part? I thought it was interesting compared to a lot of the other mods out there.
Well it'll be awhile before it's even done, and I still need to learn what exactly I need to edit... So I'm pretty sure MCP will be updated before I get it finished so I can work with that. Same with ModLoader and such

Pork and such are regenerating your stamina (if there would be one, which you need for fighting/to dig/etc), and your medicine is primary healing your wounds?

Maybe. But the thing is, I'm gonna have it on low spawning rate to begin with. I'm not gonna have it so each tree has four roots on it or anything like that, it won't be that amazingly abundant. Not to mention the fact you'll be able to farm it like any other growable item. I think, I still have to look into that.
And to be honest, how the randomness I've been talking about will work, I'm fairly certain it'll be balanced out pretty well.
So as for progress, I've been working on it a bit with my dad but mainly I've been putting my effort into reading a textbook he has on Java. So nothing major yet... I'll post some designs and such at one point.
However, I think it would be implemented better if medicines did more than just heal you for X hearts.
What do I mean?
Introduce curses and poisons. Curses namely coming from Nether monsters, such as Pigmen or maybe even Mo's wraiths, and poisons added to a spider's regular attack.
These poisons or curses could have effects such as rendering your armor value to 0, or halving your maximum number of hearts (until it's cleansed), or even gimping your damage. Spider poison could DoT you very slowly or something (maybe half heart every minute) until it is cured.
Here's the fun part.
Overdosing. Yep. Take too much of a certain medicine and your screen will begin to liquify, a-la entering a Nether portal, but without all that purple portal stuff. Or maybe make it psychedelic.
You could call the mod "Microbiology and Narcotics mod" LOL
Like I said, this is the first mod I've ever attempted. I might work on that but I wouldn't expect anything like that for a very long time. After I get this up to the point where I can release it, I promised my clan I'd do another mod.
I do like it though, don't get me wrong. Just again... first mod ever.
You have the support of someone who has been a gamer since before he could read. I love alchemy in almost ANY form and game, also, diversity in plants in a game like Minecraft is also awesome, anyway it is implemented.
