DEVELOPMENT UPDATE [12/24/10]:Progress is going quite well! DESPITE the fact that Beta kinda screwed up the process. Plans are steering towards having the mod be stand alone and not rely on mod loaders. Stay tuned! Also, check out the current Tiered Achievement Database and contribute to it! ----------------------------- USE THIS THREAD FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES.
USE THIS THREAD TO SUGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS/FEATURES, etc FOR THE MOD. Note: Achievements in the list will have a high chance of being added to the mod.

Features Explained Achievement Booklets
Achievement booklets allow you to look back on your Achievements (with the normal achievement booklet) and to see which Achievements you have yet to achieve (with the achievement manual; a little harder to obtain).
Losing a booklet will NOT erase your achieved accomplishments (contrary to the original suggestion of achievement booklets).

Rewards
This seems pretty self-explanatory. Rewards are sometimes given for achieving certain Achievements. These can range from little things to mod-introduced items (if modders include achievements with their releases; yes, this is possible).
Adaptations
You adapt with your successes (or maybe failures)! These adaptations will not be extremely game-changing. Just little improvements for you.
e.g.: Accident Prone: "Fall to your death 100 times." ADAPT[slightly less falling damage]
Stand-alone Achievements
Not many of these will be in the Tiered achievement pack. But, these are pretty self-explanatory. Achievements that are not part of a tier or chain (both explained after this).
e.g.: Tree Puncher: "Gather 64 logs from trees using your bare hands."
Mod-related Achievements
These can be made into chains or tiers, or just stand-alone achievements. A modder can choose to include achievements to be added to the game that relate to the mod. A tutorial will be made by Mettra to show a modder how to achieve this.
Achievement Chains
Chains are seperated into Parts. Each part is not able to be started until the previous parts are completed. Chain parts are usually short-term achievements (the opposite of tiers). Rewards are usually only included at the end of the chain.
Tiered Achievements
Tiered achievements are seperated into 4 tiers (usually ordered by difficulty). The tiers' names are the Stone/Dirt/Sand/Wood (undecided), Iron, Gold, and Diamond tiers. The Diamond tier is usually the only tier that gives valuable rewards and adaptations.
Group tiers are an idea in which a certain # of players on a SMP server can participate in this tier together, which usually has a ridiculously immense requirement, with each participant's actions counting towards the requirement.

o.o Sounds like a good idea but i cant see it happening
*breaks block* Achivement Unlocked The Manipulator 10gs
If that achievement in particular turns you off, I can certainly take it off the list. "First" achievements are sometimes thought of as pointless to some people so I understand.
And I didn't intend there being a Gamerscore-type thing like Xbox or anything.
This mod would just give the player something extra to strive for in his/her everyday survival life.
Thanks for the support. (And I just noticed your signature is about unlocking an achievement! haha)
I would like to emphasize to everyone what I said in the OP.
Contribute by posting your ideas for possible Achievements/Rewards or modifications to the existing Achievements/Rewards. Or if you want to make a suggestion or two for the mod.
Even though there is currently no Modder working on this, constructing and perfecting the list of achievements beforehand would give the Modder more to work with if someone decides to step up to this idea.
Along the lines of achievements, it'd be endlessly entertaining to have a statistics screen to go along with it, either to keep track of your achievement progress or just for the sake of seeing what you've done.
Personally, I'd like to be able to look and see how many cobblestone I've mined and how far I've walked, and other such things.

It is the equivalent of saying
"We should add drug trafficking to the game to attract more Mexicans. I'm not saying that I'm racist, it is just that most Mexicans traffic drugs."

I agree with you 100%. And I'm sure a statistics tracking system would be needed for achievements.
I like this idea. It would add something to play for when I'm playing Minecraft. Most games these days have an achievements page of sorts so why wouldn't minecraft have one as well?
Well, for the slaying achievements, you could have different tiers of killcounts in an achievement chain.
Say, for spiders (or whatever else)
1 -> 5 (+4) -> 25 (+20) -> 100 (+80) -> 250 (+150)
Maybe each monster tier unlocks a different doodad.
You can't have too many new blocks yet, but maybe you could make badge-like items to squirrel away in your house as cosmetic rewards.
Jeez, this is gonna become more than just achievements pretty quickly. ~ w~
There were some other threads with achievements proposed, I'll go sorting through them and post up anything of interest.
EDIT: Here's a suggestion thread that you could peruse, it's got some good ideas: Achievements

Chains of killing sound great. After achieving these, the achievement monster could even possibly get stronger!
Also, thanks for the suggestion thread! I will definitely add some of those to the list!

Personally, I'd love maybe a little quote or flavor description that would come with the achievements.
Time to Climb: "Craft 64 ladders."
"I'm still in a dream, Snakkee Eatteeerrr"
I suck at references, but eh.
LOL I love that idea. I'll see how it looks once I start working on Achievement Requirements popup mimic screenshot.
EDIT: Updated original post with screenshot of Achievements page. (Not the Achievement Requires popup I'm talking about above)
Right now I am figuring out the best and easiest way for modders to use it in their mods.
If it works, me love you long time.
And I would like to personally thank Mettra for volunteering to begin developing this mod! I can't wait to see the progress.
But now that we have our man(possibly woman? u never know), we need to pull some achievement & reward ideas out our asses full force!
