Based on the information found in this thread viewtopic.php?f=25&t=71923
I reversed the code and generated an image that should show exactly how the biomes map to the two colors.png files.
That is the most bizarre mapping that I could imagine being designed for this purpose. I think Notch's shish ka-bob must have been spiked the day he came up with this.
Can you explain any further how these swatches are sampled? I suppose I could replace these solid areas with gradients and generate some worlds, but if you have any additional info I'd love it if you'd share it!
EDIT: Nevermind the request for more info. I read the linked tread and was inundated with more than I could process.
This might help make a little more sense of it. I did another rendering without the odd distortion he used.
Temperature goes from hottest at the top to coldest at the bottom.
Moisture goes from wettest at the left to driest at the right.
For whatever reason he decided to squash the right hand side of it, my guess is that it was some attempt to mimic how warmer air can hold more moisture in the real world. Personally I think he would have been better off with just the rectangular mapping as I don't see any real gain from doing it with the triangular one, but eh, not my game.

uh... the squashed right hand side is how it it is the colors.png file that decides the color..
(i think)
Well yes, but I'm not sure why he went with the triangle rather than just having the *colors.png files be square. I think it would have made it simpler and saved a few cpu cycles. The more I think about it, the less sense the current mapping makes as a mapping that assumed that if a place was really cold, it would also be really dry would have the bottom of the image squashed rather than the right side.
So yea, I really don't know what Notch was thinking on this one. Maybe it was just easier to make a gradient or maybe the triangle was just stuck in his head from his scribblings on the whiteboard. *shrug*

Well compare the two false color ones, and keep in mind what each color means. That's what I meant by not right.
Laterz.
Tundra spanning from dull green to yellow doesnt make any sense at all
swamp taking up a majority of the greenest part of the triangle doesnt make any sense either
and in the game (where pumkings spawn) the seasonal forest is orangish, not dull blue-green
my distribution shows tundra in the dullest blue section of the triangle, desert in the most yellow section, seasonal forest in the orangish section, forest taking up a majority of the green, rainforest in the brightest green, etc etc etc etc
I'm not a troll. If you are baseing that decision off the number of posts I have, just stop.
I'm allowed to argue my point if I want to anyway. To me, the one The_Fool got by using the games code, seems more correct than yours does.
Yours is not totaly incorrect however, but not exact either.

Lolz, lighten up a bit anyway, laterz.
the only diference between our falsecolors is that in mine, one of the values is inverted, and the axis' are swapped
its using a proportionally modified version of The_Fool's square generated falsecolor, as in: still based on the same code

I know that your's is based off the one The_Fool made that didn't have the distortion effect added, (seriously though, why the heck did Notch do that?), only you flipped the image along a 45 degree angle axis that runs from the top left to the bottom right, then added the distortion affect.

* RAINFOREST (rainforest)
* SEASONAL FOREST (seasonal forest)
* PLAINS (plains)
* DESERT (desert)
* FOREST (forest)
* SHRUBLAND (shrubland)
* SAVANNA (savanna)
* SWAMPLAND (swampland)
* TAIGA (taiga)
* TUNDRA (tundra)
Great work though.

mirrored it horizontally and rotated 90 degrees counter clockwise, then re-distorted into the triangle
tell me if this doesnt match up with the default colors WAYYYY better

if you're talking about the blurring its because I couldnt find a "nearest neighbor" setting for distortion
but look at where desert is, and seasonal forest, all of them match the colors in the default .png's
and how sections aren't all completely scrunched up
Going up increases percipetation, (amount of rainfall). Going right increases temperature.
